Chapter 10: Unfair Bargains

A burst of energy happened in the throne room, one that nobody could have felt. This was only the beginning of what was about to come their way. There was a rush to get to the throne room as soon as Reepicheep informed what was going on. Caspian was pacing the dais of the throne as they waited for the enemies to enter the castle while Sophie was shaking her feet in anxiety.

It was a Narnian tradition to approach the enemy territory with a white flag in hand, a symbol of no man's territory, and they couldn't be hurt in the process. It was how they had tricked Miraz into sparring with Peter, and his pride had gotten him killed even if Caspian had felt that he could change. He was his uncle after all.

"Calm down, Your Majesties," said the Professor, who was worried that his blood pressure would rise up seeing the two of the most calmest people in his life worried.

"We don't know why they are coming here," said Caspian, continuing to pace.

The Lords were informed of the enemy's first contact and were seated in their respective thrones. They were whispering indistinctively but Sophie knew that some of them were still uncertain about the news.

The double doors opened and silence filled the room. A hag and a wolf entered, the hag holding the white flag in one hand and a scroll in another, the wolf looking around the room at everyone and growling, intimidating them. Sophie stood up to show their dominance, that they were the ones who would decide to betray the white flag's purpose. The hag looked at her and stopped walking, almost seeing someone that she had seen a long time ago - Queen Helen. Her cackle was loud and echoed throughout the room. It could not be possible.

"What are you doing here?" Caspian asked them.

"We are here on behalf of Her Imperial Majesty, Jadis!" The hag cackled once again.

"What does the scroll say?" Caspian was getting right to the business, not in a mood for anyone to waste time.

The wolf growled at Sophie but she continued to stare at him while the hag opened the scroll and started reading. "Her Imperial Majesty, Jadis, Queen of Narnia...." Sophie barked a laugh at that. "Empress of the Lone Islands...." Caspian smiled at that and turned to look at Sophie. The hag and the wolf noticed their playfulness and were confused. "She has sent a message asking you to give up your throne. Or else, she will bring her wrath once again."

Caspian stood straighter then. He knew that they were serious. Everyone knew that. "And here we thought that we could live in peace."

The hag and the wolf were confused by the King's joking around. Caspian touched Sophie's arm and moved back, making her eyebrows furrow in confusion. But he simply beckoned her to move forward and make the decision. She knew what he was trying to do and was going to respect his decision.

And so, she stood in his place, looking at every single Lord's face and coming to a decision. "Tell the White Witch that Narnia will not be given up by us nor will the throne." The 'us' had them confused but Sophie was sure that they would find out soon enough who she was. "Tell her that if she doesn't leave Narnia within the end of the week, we....." She took one step down for a dramatic effect. "We will be the one to bring our wrath."

"And who might you be to tell Her Majesty anything?" The wolf had a rough and deep voice, which sent chills through Sophie's back because it sounded like he was threatening.

Sophie was about to tell them who she was but Caspian spoke for her. "She is the True Queen of Narnia." He stood next to her. "Tell your Witch," Sophie had never seen Caspian snarl anything before but there was no one who could change her feelings towards him. "that the Heir of Narnia is back."

He took her hand in his. She looked at him and smiled, grateful that both of them were going back to things the way they were.

The hag and the wolf left the castle untouched. They could have been killed straight away but the council knew that was not how they were supposed to deal with the enemy. Right after they left, the council agreed to go ahead with the war.

Confidence was key. Sophie finally understand the real meaning behind that phrase, facing the support from people by her side, supporting her decisions at such a peril time. Embracing who she was was happening slowly but this war would be her only chance for revenge. Avenging her parents for the fall that was brought to them would be what she was looking forward to, and Caspian could recognise her emotions all too well.

When they were making their war to the armoury for making battle plans, he stopped her. "Are you sure you want to come with us? Sophie, I know that you want to take on the Witch because of your parents." She just stared at him. He was right. But it was more than that. "I had a chance to kill my uncle during the Raid."

But she knew that already. "We need to think about the people as well, Caspian. My revenge is just a part of the ultimate goal – keeping Narnia safe. Nothing comes over them. I am indebted to Narnia in many ways and I'm more than this. I need to fight this war because it's my war too."

"But killing the White Witch will not bring your parents back."

"I know." She nodded, understanding that after giving it more thought. Revenge was a motivation, not the goal. Safety and shelter was what she had sought out all her like and that was what she would continue to do now. "But I need to know what happened to them. And she is the only one who can give me the answers that I am searching for. I'm sure."

Only problem was that at that time, Sophie didn't know exactly how big things were going to get in the next few years because she didn't know what had happened in the past. She didn't know about them.

Trumpkin was already in position, having the maps of potential battlefields open. Small figurines were placed on top of them on either side representing the soldiers that will be needed for this. The figurines were of four colours. Two were on one side and two were on the other side.

"We have a problem. We don't have enough men. The number of Narnians and the number of soldiers will not enough if our estimate of the enemy's army is right. I'm afraid that the creatures of the night are more in number."

"And how big is your estimate?"

The Professor and Trumpkin looked at each other. "Big."

"If we are able to get around five hundred more men, we will be able to win this. Narnians can confirm their soldiers once we finalise ours."

"And how do we do that?" Sophie asked everyone.

"Oh," said Caspian, realising the answer.

"Yes, I'm afraid so," said the Professor.

"What is it?" Sophie asked, looking at Caspian but the question was for everyone.

"We need to meet with the Duke of Galma, for they are the closest political alliance that we've got."

"Oh," she realised what he was meaning. "We need to talk to Duke Mirza."

"What!" A voice echoed through the stone structure of the How.

"It's true, Your Majesty. The girl resembles the queen just as I remember her to be - the same doe eyes, the same dark hair, the same height....she seems to be-"

"Shut up!" The White Witch screamed, her hand gripping her staff tightly. "Somehow they managed to beat me, those...." She inhaled sharply. "They are not going to win. I am not going to let them. A couple of whiny babies managed to bring Aslan back and defeat me then but I am not going to let a child defeat me now. She was supposed to die."

Jadis' eyes widened as she realised what she had said. "That's it."

She looked up at the fire crackling in front of Aslan's wall engraving and a sly smile spread across her face. She rotated her staff in her hand and plunged it into the same place that the hag had done a few years back. Ice started to form a wall all around the room, changing the hue of the room from brown to blue.

Jadis turned around the face the hag. "We have a war to prepare for."

She wasn't going to lose then because this time, she was more powerful. She had been brought back from the Underworld for a reason, even if it wasn't by the two that she thought would bring her back. One way or another, Jadis would win, because even if she lost, she had people backing up for her.

Even if she died, she knew that the other two would finish what they had started.

If King Frank and Queen Helen's child hadn't died during their reign, she would die in Jadis' hands now. No matter what.
