Chapter 10: Playing With the Trap
The bird captured in the cage tried to fly out as she always had ever since she was forced to live in an abandoned castle, all alone. "You can't possibly understand me but are you okay? I wish I could help you out but I am of no match to a Witch." Sophie looked around the room for a way to be useful. "We need to....'we' is right."
The robin chirped, singing happily at this possibility of her future that she had never seen coming. The bird spun around her cage and sat on the perch as an obedient servant, looking at Sophie with curious beady eyes.
"I am glad that I'm not alone. How I wish I had left before when I had a chance." Sophie hung her head down, wondering what Tavros' condition was at the shores of the Island. "Damn it. Tavros."
The robin sang in a key of G, making Sophie sway to the tune, but it wasn't easy singing when the cage still lay on the ground. "I'm going to try to lift the cage, alright?" Sophie moved her hand forward and acting on this action, the pulley made its noise, a mechanical whir, echoing through the entire castle.
Sophie's wrist were starting to bruise by her lifting all the weight, but the bird would have been uncomfortable on the floor if she hadn't. The base of the stand was firm and light-weighted, which helped Sophie lift the cage back up after three tries. "There you go! That seems to be much better."
She looked around the room once again and her eyes came upon a glass-stained window. There were three women in the design - all of them were different from the others - standing in a circle with their hands held in front of the large circle of fire.
"Do you know how I can escape?"
The bird would definitely have thought that Sophie was crazy to keep talking to her but seemed to understand her. The bird pointed her wing at the window and Sophie knew what she had to do.
The castle was older than it looked from outside and it was definitely not built during the current era. The Enchantress must have definitely known Sophie's parents as the cabinets in the room were of Old Wood, a tree that no longer existed. But it was said to be the protector of Narnia - the tree of life. This was the tree that Sophie knew the first Walkers to have placed in Narnia - Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer. It was what had been poisoned and cut down for Jadis to rule on Narnia. The Witch must have definitely had help from the outside, traitors that had chosen to side with the giant instead of humans.
There were all sorts of mystical items in the room. Sophie wouldn't have been surprised if she found a totem or a crystal ball because aside from controlling the Mist, she was sure that the Witch knew sorcery. "How I wish I could reach that table! I cannot believe that I am in this situation." She rotated her head to relieve the pain on her neck. "I guess that Tavros will have to use Susan's horn after all."
The minute she spoke Susan's name, the robin fluttered her wings very loudly. She sang very loudly, looking like she was screaming something. Sophie thought she heard a faint voice in the room, which she eventually deduced to be her lack of sleep.
Before she could react, Olivis entered the room, the mist following her in as her very own cape. "You are one sneaky little girl, did you know?"
"How would I know? It's obvious that you're the smarter one since I'm chained." She gave a false flattering smile, lifting her hands in the air.
"How did you enter this castle?" Olivis asked, admiring Sophie's weapons that she had kept on the table in front of her.
"Are you really naive to think that I'll tell you anything?"
"No. But you will," she said as she picked up Sophie's dagger.
"Do not touch that!"
"Emotional much?" Olivis asked, a smirk spread across her face. "How would I not recognise Helen darling's dagger? She used to conquer everything with such a small blade. It was what she would say, you know? Being little didn't matter as long as you could defend yourself."
Sophie couldn't help but feel proud of her parents. No matter what happened to them, they went down fighting and she knew that they wouldn't have given up no matter what. "What are you doing?" Sophie asked as the Enchantress walked towards her with the dagger.
"Getting answers."
She swung the dagger across her right arm.
Sophie shouted in pain but Olivis' laughter overcame it. "You bread!"
"What did you say, dear?"
"Unless you want me to bite your ear off, I suggest that you keep your distance."
"You wouldn't." She sliced Sophie's other arm as well, making her squirm before her as her parents should have. "I've had my fun with the bird and I can't lose the chance to make someone else bleed now can I? I was getting bored with the old man anyway."
"You would hurt a bird just so your crazy head can be satisfied?" Sophie spitted out but Olivis ignored her. "Were you the one who blinded the boat?" That seemed to be the perfect way of distracting her from coming for her. Sophie knew what she had seen before the start of her very own journey.
"Clever girl! I like that about the opposite side. Now, I'll answer anything that you want. I have taken my revenge. Well, a part of it anyway."
"Why are you terrorising the merpeople?" Sophie asked, trying not to whimper and give Olivis the satisfaction of making her feel pain.
"I don't have any other source of entertainment, honey! It's like I said before. You would do the same thing if you were trapped in an enchanted castle with nothing but a ruddy old bird as a companion." Her gaze fell upon the robin that definitely looked offended how. "Ugh. This is a worse curse than not being able to die or leave."
The only thought that Sophie had was surviving. This was the second time she was fighting to cling on to her life, the robin's chirps her only company. There had to be a way out of this. "How are you controlling the mist?"
"Are you really naive to think that I'll tell you anything?"
"Using my own words against me?" Sophie scoffed.
"I have been alive a lot longer than you and I've seen the end of worlds. I've committed crimes that your pretty face wouldn't even dream of." She placed Helen's dagger back at the table and saw down at a chair. "You do have a pretty face, indeed. I would have liked to suck your life force out of you if I had gotten a chance. Perhaps the great King Farhan and Queen Helen's reign got over before the fun began!"
"You have magic then."
Olivis didn't need to confirm anything because Sophie already knew the source of her power. "A girl is nothing if she doesn't have something that makes her special." She spoke in a less intimidating voice, as if reliving them to be someone else's words.
The robin started flying up and down once again and Sophie knew that the Enchantress wouldn't spare her that time. "What is the window about?"
"That window is the story of my life."
Olivis got emotional.
Bingo.
She fell into Sophie's trap.
The Emerald Enchantress began to talk her life's story but her voice was faded for Sophie as the pounding of her own blood was heard near her ears. She had to get out. Every beat was shouting that at her. Sophie brought her hands behind her back and was pulling another pin out of her head. Once she had it in my hand, she tried to pick the lock along with a small spell that the Professor had taught her. "It would come in handy once a day." His voice echoed in her ears.
"We created wonders together!" Olivis boasted as she talked about her sisters. Sophie hadn't been listening to her but if she had, she could have realised the truth behind these words. "We were inseparable." The sound of a click spread the room and the Enchantress turned around with horror over her eyes. "What did you do?"
"One tip for any future capturing. Never underestimate the opponent." She quoted Trumpkin and snapped her fingers.
The chains that had bound her were now holding their owner together on the wall. The snap that she made was to use the energy of the water outside and using it to trap Olivis instead. "Ha! You're quite the witch yourself!" Olivis praised as Sophie stumbled to stand up.
"I'm nothing like you," Sophie answered as she shook the pain off her hands. The wounds were refusing to stop bleeding, making her drowsy. "Woah!" She held onto the stand of the cage and the bird started fluttering.
"What kind of a princess are you? You can't even handle losing blood."
Sophie steadied herself and headed for the table that had her weapons. She strapped the sword in its place and then searched the cabinets for towels. She wrapped it around the wounds, the red contrasting the white almost immediately.
"See, that's where you are wrong." Sophie lifted the dagger and turned to face the Enchantress. "I'm not a princess." She walked towards Olivis and plunged the dagger into her stomach. "I'm a Queen," she whispered into her ears and heard her groan in answer.
"Nice playing with you." She snarled after Sophie took her dagger out, leaving Olivis in pain.
"Hey," Sophie whispered to the bird, breaking the lock of the cage, finally setting her free. The bird flew around the room once before poking Olivis on the head.
"I should have killed you when I had the chance!" A laugh escaped her throat. "You're going to be just like the three of us one day, all alone with the weight of your own sorrows harbouring your sanity.
"I will never be like you," Sophie told her. "But you will suffer here till the end of time."
Olivis had a sly smile spread across her face. "We'll see about that, Sophie Adams! One day, you will have to face a situation where you have to make a very important decision." Sophie ignored her as she opened the doors of the room slowly and walked out. "We'll meet again!"
Sophie stumbled out of the room with the Enchantress' laugh echoing through the walls, recognising the floor she was on to be the second one. Four flights of stairs awaited her, calling her to them with bright lights illuminating her path, or maybe it was simply her dusky vision. She hurried down the stairs while the robin flew past her, keeping her company.
"Don't get out until I tell you so." She told her as she increased the grip of her hand on the hilt of the sword.
Sophie was light-headed at different instances but the bird kept her going, who would break into a song if Sophie closed my eyes for too long, waking her up in an instant. "Ah, I hate stairs," Sophie said, hopping off the last step but falling to the ground instead. "Ow."
Only a soft groan could be managed with her mind controlling her to go to sleep, unconsciousness threatening to take over. The towel in her hand was a bright crimson and she couldn't stop her eyelids from drooping down. She turned around and lay on her back, looking at the dome and watching the vast ocean move peacefully.
Deja vu spread over her from the night of battling with Jadis.
Stars. She was seeing the stars.
But she was under water.
Maybe she was dreaming?
Her vision was going hazy. She was finally giving into the unconsciousness when she heard the cry of the robin. "What?"
The bird chittered and flew around Sophie as she tried to get up. "You cried," Sophie whispered in awe as she started to get a control over her body. "Thank you!" The bird chirped in response, proud of herself.. "All done," Sophie said, checking her wounds close up slowly. The bird was her Fawkes. "Let's get out of here, partner."
Sophie headed towards the throne room, the green stone on the head of the throne shining light directly into her eyes as if realising what she was up to. The reflection of the waves had disappeared, leaving the statues in the room looking more lively than they did before as they slowly lost the gray shades.
The Enchantress' spell was weakening, and now, it was time to destroy it altogether.
Sophie admired the craftsmanship of the throne but that didn't last long when the doors opened once again and Olivis barged in, her dress bloody but her wounds healed. "How dare you hurt a ruler of Ch-"
Before she could interrupt Sophie, she snapped her fingers once again.
A loud blast erupted in the hallway and Olivis turned to face what was causing the noise. "Oh-"
Sophie forced water to enter the castle and submerge them.
Kids who want to be evil in future? Take notes. Don't choose to have a castle under the ocean if you aren't Percy Jackson, another child of Poseidon or Sophie Adams for that matter.
Once again, if Sophie had listened to Olivis, she would have realised who she was exactly facing. And maybe, just maybe, her future could have been different. Yet I'm afraid that any hymn or verse that is ever written has been written a certain way for a very specific reason. Perhaps it may not make sense right away but there is a truth behind all that happens.
Robin was screeching at the sight of water, which made Sophie create a vacuum sphere and threw it at the bird before the water submerged them all. The bird realised what had happened and started to float on the quickly rising level of water.
"Not so soon-" Olivis threw a spell towards the bird.
"No!" Sophie screamed as the green mist surrounded the bird, thinking that the spell was to break the vacuum sphere but it must have missed.
Robin was safe inside.
Sophie turned to face the throne and plunged her sword into it. A loud scream spread from the throne and cracks appeared on the structure. "I didn't want it to be this way."
The structure started throwing the particles of the throne away. "Uh oh." It was going to blast up. Sophie quickly paddled through the rising level of water but knew that she wouldn't be able to make it. So, with a deep breath, she submerged into the water.
The throne room burst into pieces and the debris started to float along with the water, removing any trace of a beautiful structure having ever been built there. The impact of the explosion pushed Sophie towards the surface and the daughter of the prophecy let the structure crumble in on itself.
"Your Majesty!" Tavros exclaimed as his Queen's head burst out of the water, gasping for hair. He had seen various flashes of light from where he stood waiting and couldn't comprehend anything.
"I'm fine." She coughed as he helped her out of the water. Her mouth tasted weary as if she had chewed on cold medicine. Her hands immediately scanned her hands for the absent scars from the dagger. The water from the ocean had healed her completely.
Sophie stumbled as the pressure change of air from water took over her. Her head started to spin around but Tavros' hold made her come to reality.
The vacuum sphere reached the surface of the water and broke, setting the bird free. "Bye, Robin!"
"Robin?" Tavros asked.
"A new friend." She smiled at him. "Wait. How long has it been? Did you use the horn?"
"No, Your Majesty. But I was about to, in an hour or so if you hadn't returned." He informed. "Water doesn't affect you at all, does it?"
"Water is my friend. In a way anyway," she smiled. "The Enchantress has been defeated. We can go back home."
"We'll have to go to Ramandu's Island then."
Tavros thought Sophie had meant Telmar by 'home'. Well, she wouldn't blame him for it. Her home wasn't a location after all.
"Do you know the way?"
"With my eyes closed, Your Majesty."
Sophie laughed. "Let's go then."
She was going to go home. To Caspian.
*****
Home is a person *cries*
