The Reveal
Next morning, I was woken up by loud thuds coming from two floors below me. "What the lamb?" I thought as I got ready and went down.
Lady Daniels and her ladies were standing at the front gate surrounded by travel bags. The minute she saw me climbing down the staircase, she walked towards me.
"I hope you live happily." She sounded really genuine, which was very different from how she had behaved before. She had a sweet smile on her face as well.
"What are you talking about?"
"Like you don't know what I'm talking about." She teased me and then turned around as her carriage came.
I was confused. What happened between her and Caspian? As I made my way to the kitchen from its back entrance, I saw him waiting outside the door, staring out into the garden.
"Caspian?"
"Sophie." He looked relieved to see me and came towards me.
"What happened with Lady Daniels? Why is she leaving?"
"I told her that I have already decided who I want to court, once the time was right of course."
"Caspian-"
"Listen to me, Sophie." He took my hands in his. "You asked me to think about my people and that is exactly what I'm doing." He looked me directly in my eyes. "Narnia and its people cannot find a better queen than you."
"You're wrong, I-"
"If I ever court someone, it is going to be you, Sophie."
I didn't know what to say to that. What do you think is the best reply? "What is this between us?" I ran my fingers through my hair and then buried my face in my hands.
"I think the answer to that question is pretty obvious." He took my hand and kept it on his chest. "This heart beats only for you."
"I-" I looked away and bit my lip. "And you have thought this through."
"I have." He nodded at me.
"I can't believe you sent her away within two days."
He laughed. "I would have told her not to come if you had just told me during the ball."
"Yeah, my mistake."
Caspian was drawing circles on my hand and it did calm me down. "Are you sure? You'll have to live with me for a long time, you know? You have to tolerate all my tantrums and horrible jokes and my late-night waking up...."
He laughed in joy. "And I cannot wait to do it." He touched my cheek, his hand warm and gentle.
"Okay." I looked him in the eye. "But don't tell me that I didn't warn you." He laughed. "You'll have to handle my bringing humour into serious situations and-"
"Sophie." I sighed in relief.
Both of us leaned forward to share a kiss when we were interrupted. "Oh! I'm sorry, Your Majesty."
"Sir Reepicheep!" I exclaimed as Caspian and I moved a little away from each other. Both of us looked flustered but Reepicheep didn't say anything.
"Yes, Reepicheep?" Caspian asked him.
"The Professor has called for you urgently." Caspian looked at me. "Both of you."
"The prophecy." Both of us whispered at the same time.
"He is waiting in his chambers."
We did not waste any time and hurried to the Professor's chambers. "I'm so excited to read it!" Caspian exclaimed.
I just looked at him in awe because the prophecy could mean him losing his throne but he didn't care at all. He was just happy in that moment, and so was I.
We knocked before entering the room. The whole way, Caspian didn't let go of my hand. "Professor?" He called out as we entered.
"Caspian! Sophie!" The Professor was clearing some space on his usually clumsy desk. "I've got it!"
"The Forbidden Prophecy?" I confirmed.
"That is right." He pulled out a rolled up parchment from a sack nearby.
The Professor looked at us in confusion as we were holding hands. "She said yes." Caspian said.
"Oh!" The Professor's face gleamed with joy as he came to hug us. "You both have finally agreed on your feelings for each other!" He said, letting us go. "We were wondering how long it would take you."
"What?" I frowned at him.
"Never mind." He said. "Nina would be so happy to hear this."
I blushed and my mouth fell open. I wanted to be the one to tell Nina about it but I couldn't believe that people had talked about me and Caspian behind our backs.
"Anyway." The Professor said. "Coming back to this." He showed us the parchment. "Glenstorm told me that he had to use the stars to figure out what the prophecy said and he told me that it would take a few days. And now," He said. "We have it."
"Let's hear it then." Caspian said as the Professor opened the paper and spread it out on the table.
The Forbidden or the Forgotten Prophecy was small and of five lines that didn't make any sense. At first, anyway.
"The heir of the cabby and the painter
The scion of war and sacrifice
Strawberry's lineage cognize
The Heir of Narnia
The Lost Legacy will return"
"That doesn't make any sense." Caspian said but the Professor was staring at the parchment.
"Professor?"
"Do me a favour both of you. Meet me tomorrow before breakfast here." He said as he walked towards the door.
"Professor?" I called out for him but he was grabbing his cloak.
"I will have all the answers tomorrow, dear ones." He hurried out of the room.
I walked to the kitchen with Caspian. We walked in hand and hand after which he announced the news. Everyone broke out into claps and Nina came and hugged me. They congratulated us and Oliver said, "This deserves a treat!"
"Yes, it does!" Evelyn said.
"How are you going to tell the people?" I asked Caspian that night during dinner. The Professor hadn't come back yet. Where did he go anyway?
"I thought I'd let you do it." I hit him playfully on the arm. "I'm joking." He laughed. "I was going to make a formal announcement in a few days."
Nina hugged the two of us and gave us her blessing. I thanked her for always being there for me. "When you told me about what happened at the night of the ball, I had a feeling that you were talking about the King. But seeing both of you together, I cannot tell you how happy I am."
"Oh, Nina." I kissed her cheek and pulled her into a hug.
After everyone wished us, Caspian walked me to my room like a gentleman and I kissed him on the cheek. "Good night."
"I hope you're happy."
"With you? No doubt." I blushed. I wasn't used to flirting but a mild one worked, I guess. "Of course I'm happy."
The next day made all the difference in my life.
