New Land

"I said, who are you and what are you doing here?" His grip became tighter around my neck but it wasn't hurting. The person had a deep and rough voice. He was careful to only frighten me but not cause me any harm.

The knife would have cut my throat any second as my heart beat faster and faster. Did I just run away from one problem into another one?

"My name is Sophie Adams and I'm from London, England." I raised both my hands up to show him that I wasn't armed. I was only a teenager.

"England?" I heard another voice, which was not as deep as the person that was behind me.

"Yes." The person's grip loosened and I turned around to see who it was and my eyes widened. It was a dwarf. I hadn't met any dwarf before which made this meeting really exciting for me. "Not to be rude but you're a dwarf!"

He scoffed. "Good thing your eye sight is working."

He had blonde hair and an immense reddish-blonde turbulent beard. He had a sword strapped on a belt on his waist and a bow and a set of arrows on his back. He kept his knife back into its case on the belt.

"Trumpkin, she's a Daughter of Eve." The other voice said. "It's nice enough that she knows what you are."

I looked around but didn't see anyone apart from an auburn-coloured horse at a little distance from us, who was tied to a nail on the ground that was clearly meant for boats.

"I'm sorry," I started. "But where are you?"

That person cleared his throat. I looked down and my eyes widened up once again. "Yes, I am a mouse." He said. Obviously, he got that reaction a lot.

The mouse was standing on his hind legs. He had a small needle-like sword in his hand, which he pointed at me and a crimson feather on his head. He also had a thin circlet of gold on his head. He had ears longer and broader than a rabbit's and long whiskers on his face.

"No, uh, I was gonna say that you are holding a sword. It's small and really cute." I was dreaming, definitely dreaming.

"It's a rapier, but close enough." He came towards me to attack me. I backed away but fell on my back and hit the ground. "Don't call me or my rapier cute."

I nodded frantically. The needle was very close to my nose and the mouse could have made a strike if he wanted. I sat on my knees after he jumped off, pinched myself and yelped out in pain.

"She thinks she's dreaming." The dwarf chuckled.

"I'm not dreaming." I came to the realization. I really was in a magical land that was definitely not London where talking mice and magic healing water existed. "Where am I?"

"Beruna." The dwarf said.

"And where is that?"

"Why, dear, it's in Narnia!" The mouse exclaimed. "You are in Narnia."

"Narnia...." The name was very catchy. "Which I'm guessing is not in England."

"It certainly is not." The dwarf said.

"Wait. Who are you?" I pointed to the two of them.

"Oh, how rude of me." The mouse said. "I am Reepicheep." He kept the rapier back in its case. "The leader of the Talking Mice of Narnia."

"Talking Mice of Narnia? Is it like a club?" I tried joking. Humour during difficult situations kept me from crumbling down.

"It's my race." He corrected me sweetly.

We turned to look at the dwarf next. "The name's Trumpkin." He answered as he walked towards the river.

"And do all animals talk here?" I asked Reepicheep as I pointed to the horse. Clearly, Trumpkin needed some time to warm up to me. He wasn't a people person.

"Only Narnians." The mouse replied. "You're taking all of this really well considering the situation." He pointed out when I nodded at his reply.

"Yeah, I'm surprised at that myself." I chuckled. "What're you doing here, if you don't mind my asking?" They must have come to the river for a reason.

"Making sure that the bridge is all right." Trumpkin replied, walking on the bridge. He jumped up and down on it, knocked in several places and tightened the roped in some.

"It's newly constructed." Reepicheep explained.

"On whose orders?" I asked.

Did this Narnia have a government or was it a monarchy? I needed information about where I was if I had to make any sort of plan. I couldn't run away from them and be chased down. I wasn't a criminal and I could explain to anyone that I wasn't trespassing.

"On the orders of the King, of course." Reepicheep said, like I was supposed to know so.

"There is a King."

"Of course there is a King."

Trumpkin jumped down off the bridge. "Where were you planning to go?" He asked, pointing to my bags.

"Uh...." I didn't know how to answer that but chose to ask one instead, and I asked the right question. "Wait, how did I get here?" I was really hoping that they could answer my questions because I would go crazy otherwise.

Trumpkin and Reepicheep looked at each other. "I'm sure that you have a lot of questions on your mind right now."

"Just a tad." I said, sarcastically.

"You need to come with us." Trumpkin grabbed my arm and pushed me up.

"Are we going to meet the King?" I asked. "Can he help me?"

"The King helps everyone." Reepicheep said.

I stood up and brushed my knees to get the dust out from kneeling on the ground, but Trumpkin started pushing me with the hood of his sword. "Hey!" I grabbed it from him. "I can walk on my own, thank you."

"Trumpkin, come on." Reepicheep beckoned.

Trumpkin glared at me when he put his hand out. I handed his sword back to him and he walked past me. Both the Narnians started to lead in front of me as they whispered about the circumstance to the other.

"Let me just grab my bags." I told them. "Is the river magical?" I asked them as we neared the horse. "It healed my hand."

They turned around slowly and very dramatically. "The river healed your hand." Trumpkin said but it was more of a question.

"That's what I said." I affirmed and they looked at each other once again, having secret conversations with their eyes. "You can't talk to each other telepathically, right?" I asked. "Just want to confirm."

"Let's go." Trumpkin said. He took my bags from me and tied it to the ropes hanging from the saddle. He hopped onto the horse. Reepicheep got on as well and sat on Trumpkin's shoulders. "Do you know how to get on a horse?" He seemed to challenge me as he grabbed the horse's reins.

I tried to hold back a smile at him. I was underestimated very often but I was used to it. I got on as well and adjusted myself. "You were saying?" I asked him from behind.

Reepicheep smiled at me and it looked like Trumpkin smirked as well. "Hiya!" He hit the reins and the horse ran away from the place called Beruna, away from the bridge and towards the King's castle.

I started looking around and noted down the way we were going to the castle. There were a lot of things to be seen apart from the surroundings.

"You still haven't answered my question." Trumpkin said after some time and broke the trance that the kingdom had over me.

"Which was?"

"How did you get to Narnia?" Reepicheep asked and turned to me, still standing on the dwarf's right shoulder.

"I'm not sure myself." I said. "I was running through the woods and I happened to cross the bridge that nobody ever woods because it was called the broken bridge for a reason." I said. "And....I found myself here."

"Who were you running from?" Trumpkin taunted me but I didn't answer him.
