Apprentice

After breakfast got over, I strolled the hallway with the Professor. He told me that we could start lessons right away if I wanted to and of course, I wanted to. He explained the schedule that I was going to have to follow and told me how my studies would go from then on.

"I may wake you up in the middle of the night for Astronomy. So please do not mind it."

"Curiosity never sleeps."

There were so many subjects that I had to learn but I knew that I would never get bored. All of them sounded so interesting - History, Geography, Astronomy, Art, Archery, Alchemy, Cosmography, Rhetoric, Heraldry, Physics and Music.

I was wondering about what Physics would hold for me but unlike our world, Narnian Physics was pretty easy and really cool! We didn't have much of theory and it was similar to the subject that I had learnt.

"Will I learn how to sword fight?" I asked as we made our way to the first lesson in the Library. "I wanted to ask Trumpkin whether he would teach me but if I'm going to learn Archery as you mentioned before...."

"You can learn swordsmanship if you want to." He said. "I didn't think that you would want to, which is why I opted for Archery."

"Oh, I really want to." It was very exciting for me. "Archery has always fascinated me but wielding a blade would never go for a waste, right? Especially now that I'm living here."

"I'll ask Trumpkin today. I'm sure that he would be more than happy to teach you both."

We turned a corner and continued walking when I told Doctor Cornelius what I had been wanting to mention all the while. "Thank you, Professor. Thank you for everything."

"You do thank everyone a lot."

"I'm guessing that Trumpkin and Reepicheep told you." I blushed.

"And Nina." He said. "And most of the people in the castle." He chuckled.

"Professor, why is that everyone keeps staring at me?"

He looked at me and thought about how he should reveal the truth to me. "You're not the first person to come here from the Other World, Sophie." But before I could ask more, he added, "You'll learn about it in History. Don't worry."

We reached the Library and it was the most beautiful place that I had ever seen! "Woah!" I exclaimed.

It was a long room with many columns of books on either side of the room. There were shelves and shelves of books that covered the three sides of the room. There was a long table in the centre with some books stacked on it. I think Belle would be jealous because I had clearly won the competition. The Beast's library was nothing compared to King Caspian's.

The Professor started to pull some books out from some of the shelves and I helped him carry them to the nearby table. Looking at the hardbound books gave me instant serotonin. It was the best feeling ever. I brushed my fingers against the cover and had to hold back a laugh. I was used to borrowing books but the ones in the library that I had the honour of to stand in had books that looked brand new even though they were used for years.

"What would you like to start first?" He asked me after we sat down but he already knew the answer. The look on my face said it all. "History?" I nodded eagerly.

The Professor started his teaching with the creation of Narnia. "Aslan created the world we live in."

The name 'Aslan' sent some positive vibrations inside me for the second time. I felt happy all of a sudden. I was smelling petrichor even though there was no rain. I experienced warmth and a tingling sensation in my hands. A cold feeling pursed through my veins and I was floating. I thought I heard the sound of sea waves crashing against rocks as well, which was very strange.

"Sir Reepicheep told me about him."

"He never misses an opportunity to praise Aslan."

"Have you met him? Aslan?"

"Oh, I have. Such a day it was!" His eyes twinkled, if that was possible.

The first rulers of Narnia were from the Other World as well. Their names were Frank and Helen. We didn't know much about their rule but they were overthrown by the White Witch named Jadis.

Just hearing her name sent chills throughout my hands. I felt sadness and hunger like I have never felt before. The room seemed colder than it actually was. I might have had goosebumps, which was very rare.

Humans were the sons of Adam and daughters of Eve but Jadis was the daughter of Adam and Lilith. She was also part giant. She started ruling over Narnia and made it cold all the time. It was winter all year long.

"What about Christmas?" I asked.

"No Christmas, child. Only winter."

"That's harsh."

"That was the White Witch's rule."

The Professor also started teaching a Geography because both the subjects didn't exist without the other. When lunch came, he told me to go ahead. "Caspian and myself have some work here, dear."

I understood that they had to go through some important plans and ate lunch in the kitchen. Now that I was allowed to live there, I started to get to know everyone. They were not surprised that I got to stay but that was a great opportunity for us to get to know each other.

After lunch was over, the Professor called me and told me that we were going to move to music for a change. We started walking to the room at the far end of the corridor; the same corridor where the Library was.

It was like entering a music shop, but that was expected. Different instruments filled the room and there were notebooks and papers at one end of the room. There were also some art tools at one end of the room.

"This is the Crafts room." The Professor told me. "We couldn't come up with another name for it." He chuckled. "Would you prefer singing first or playing first?"

I thought about it. "I have learnt to play the violin. Well, I was learning anyway." I gave a nervous and shaky laughter and pointed to the instrument that most resembled a violin.

"Ah, I see." He handed the instrument to me and I played Fur Elise by Beethoven, after which I told him the history behind that piece. He was quite fascinated by it and told me that I had the skill of story telling. "Thank Aslan I have someone who is good at handling them. Caspian does not have this skill."

"He doesn't?" I sounded surprised even to myself. After seeing the King, I was sure that he would be a master at everything.

"Oh, he's terrible. But he is great at singing, I must say. Why don't you try singing something now?"

"Oh, I'm more of a player really."

"Everyone is a singer that they haven't developed. Yet." He was always very positive and I needed someone like him in London. I was more than thankful and grateful for the portal over the bridge to have brought me to Narnia.

"Can I take that?" I pointed to the guitar-like instrument.

I played some notes on it and figured out the placements of the chords that I was searching for. I thought about what I should sing and ended up singing Can't Help Falling In Love With You by Elvis Presley. It was a classic song and I could never go wrong with it.

The Professor clapped when I played the final notes. "I told you, dear."

I smiled. I had done a good job and it was all because of the confidence that he radiated in me. "I was in the band in school, but our teacher wasn't a good one."

"It was her mistake because she has overlooked someone with great talent."

I gave him a polite smile. "Thank you, Professor. Really."

Narnia was slowly becoming my fairy tale come true and I was loving it. Even if it was a dream according to my conspiracy theories, I didn't want to wake up. I wished for it to last until the end of time.

At dinner, the questions continued and I loved being there. I gave Nina a huge hug after dinner. "What was that for?" She asked me.

"I don't know." I laughed.

I wasn't really a hugger. I didn't like being close to people either but Narnia was having an effect on me in just a few days and it was for the better.

"It's nice seeing you happy, Sophie. You don't seem nervous anymore."

"Thank you, Nina. It's nice to feel this way." I said. "Can I make breakfast tomorrow?" I asked everyone in the kitchen.

"Can you cook?" Oliver asked me.

"Only one thing. I need your help as well, obviously."

"What is it that you will be cooking?" Evelyn asked me.

"Soup."
