Chapter Three

A/N: So first thing is my computer died and when it did it took Chapter 3 with it. I have this story written out and I am in the process of typing it all out and changing it as it goes. So in the original Chapter three it was completely different than this one, but after comparing them I think this one is a bit more important for two reasons. One it identifies Ethan's family and history and second it sets up and secures the plot. I really need yall to let me know what you think so far and don't worry the real chapter three will make an appearance one day but it will be incorporated throughout the story.

Chapter Three

I narrowed my eyes as I looked at Aggie in disbelief. First Kaley and Emory, then every single person in the tavern from last night and now Aggie. What next, are they going to do a breaking news bulletin on the town news station. I cannot even believe that Aggie is entertaining this craziness, much less the look on her face says she believes the nonsense. I sat back and blew out a breath that I did not even realize that I was holding and ran my hand through my hair. Now that I think about it I need a haircut, my hair seems to have grown at a ridiculous high rate of speed since I got here and where prior to me arriving my black spiky cut hair was now almost touching my shoulders.

I am not even sure how that is possible but with my heightened senses, which I can't explain either, I seem to have hair growth issues now too. I had to admit some strange shit was going down and I did not have an explanation for any of it. I watched Aggies face for a moment trying to read her emotions and realized she was watching me just as intense as I was her.

"Aggie, I am not a Prince or a King! Yes my family is from Scotland, but no we are not royalty.  The similarities end there" I explained to her with a bit of anger.

Anger was so uncommon for me, I mean I got angry like everyone else but I was always cool and calm, no matter what. It was one of the things that I was known for inside a courtroom. My ability to win was ruthless because I never let anger get in my way and I was always calculated in every action. It had always come natural for me and being an attorney was a normal evolution for me as well as my family. We all had the same type personalities, so we all became partners in my family's firm which specialized in criminal and corporate law.

I was brought back from my thoughts by Aggie asking me a question.

Although I had heard her whisper I still found myself responding "What was that' I asked her just as quietly.

"Tell me about your family, maybe that will help us determine if it's true and maybe just maybe we can put all the puzzle pieces together and get to the bottom of everything" she said as she sat back onto the couch and attempted to appear relaxed.

I could tell she was still on edge but she was trying to be brave around me. It struck me odd that everyone showed so much fear around me because they thought I was a prince or king but this town had been strange from the time I arrived. I found myself once again pondering why anyone would be so scared of me or the royal family. They must be pure evil if the reception I had experienced was true expressions of emotions by the towns people. I sat back farther and leaned my head back into the cushions and looked into the fire. I might as well tell her everything so she would understand that everyone was wrong about me.

I started at the beginning telling her that I was four when my family decided to move to Los Angeles California. I had always been told by both of my parents, Evin and Allina that my dad and Uncle Ian had gotten an opportunity to buy out a distant relative's law firm so they had decided to take the entire family to the states and never looked back. At the time my parents only had me and my younger brother Alex, who is two years younger so they made it seem like it was an easy move. My mother found out shortly after we got there that she was pregnant with my brother Evan. At four years old I did not think anything about it and it was not a traumatic move so I remember very little about it.

My mom used to show both me and Alex pictures of our home here and we would visit at Christmas every year. She even went as far as making us do impromptu history lessons to make sure we remembered where we came from as well as the rich country history. She included Evan and Adairia in the lessons as they grew older, especially concentrating on customs and traditions since the both of them were not born in Scotland. As I got older I questioned her more and more but she would never budge on why us knowing so much about our home was so important. She would just brush it aside or change the subject. I chalked it up to her wanting to keep us connected to her home.

Glancing back and forth from the fire to Aggie I continued on explaining that not only did my immediate family move but it included my Uncle Ian, his wife, Elise and their eldest son, Rylan as well as my dad and Uncle Ian's sister, Isla and her husband, Allister and their three children, Kyla, Gavin and Rori. My mother's brother, Lachlan and his wife, Lexi also moved with us. Now that I was older I realized how bizarre that the entire family moved to partner on this law firm, which today is home to almost everyone that has a law license in my family. No one could even tell anyone inquiring who the distant relative that sold it to my family was nor was it a good idea to ask so we all eventually left it alone.

Even though Aggie could see the confusion on my face she did not say anything as I pushed through my memories trying not to leave a detail out. Even the operating staff are family in some sort or fashion. I stopped for a moment and rubbed my temples trying to head off the tension headache I could feel starting to form.

Aggie leaned forward towards me "let me get us some tea and you some headache medicine".

I gave her a thankful nod ad leaned back with my eyes closed as I thought about everything I had told her and going through the files in my brain about what else I needed to tell her. Before I could ponder on it for too long she was back with a tray of hot tea, small cake type edibles and a bottle of headache pills. I sat up quickly grabbing the bottle fast and twisting the cap off in one swift motion. I emptied four tablets into my hand and threw them back to my throat swallowing them dry. Aggie handed me a steaming mug of tea and motioned to the tray for milk and sugar. I grabbed a couple of packets of sugar and dumped them in after I tore the top of the packets off and stirred it in the steaming amber liquid. I took a huge gulp of tea and enjoyed the slight burn down my throat as it washed what was left of the headache tablets down to my stomach. I sat back and sipped on my hot mug of tea and picked up where I left off with my family history.

As I was recapping what I had told her so far I had a feeling sweep through my body creating an uneasy feeling which must have shown on my face which caused Aggie to look at me with a puzzled look. It was the same feeling that I had the last 4 nights that I had felt when I was at the tavern and Emory had walked in. I tried to shake it off but it was seeping into my soul and leaving an aching deep within. I had to shake it off and get to the point of all of this so I could get my answers. It did not seem like Aggie was inclined to answer any of my questions until I told her everything there was to tell about me and my family.

"Aggie how is any of this going to help convince you and everyone else that your wrong about me" .

Aggie looked at me with the same puzzled look "It has everything to do with what is going on. If my suspicions are correct it will show your direct link to the lost prince, the entire royal family just up and disappeared one day and if what you are telling me is true then its more than a mere coincidence".

"You cannot be serious? I would have known if we were some lost royal family" I said feeling my anger rising at the thought that my entire life was a complete lie.

I shook the thought out of my head, even I was beginning to have doubts.

Aggie spoke up with her gentle nature "Can I ask you something about the staff".

I nodded yes and she put her finger to her chin and tapped. "Anyone that works for your firm that is very close to your mother and maybe seems really out of place".

I pondered this for a minute. There was one person that my mother always talked with, she was with my mother for as long as I could remember, and she was referred to as my mother's cousin, who she was raised with. I never found a reason to question it even though I knew there was no relation. They looked nothing alike, which did not mean anything in itself but there were no other definitive characteristics that would lead me to ever believe that they were related. She was an odd person, that seemed to just be out of place everywhere and stayed to herself. No one ever questioned why she was always present at family events and always dropped by to visit us all at the firm, even giving us quirky gifts once a year that my mother was insistent that carry them with us at all times to show how grateful we were to her thoughtfulness.

My mother always told us that it was some Scottish token that protected us. Although I always carried it for my mother's sake, I again never put any stock into anything that woman told us. I found myself telling Aggie all of this leaving out the name of my mother's cousin. But I should have known that Aggie would have wanted to know her name.

"Does she have a name per chance", she asked with a small laugh present in her voice.

I smiled genuinely for the first time since all of this crap started.

"Fiona" I chuckled as I said her name and noticed Aggie smile in return.

"Ah Fiona, so that is where she disappeared off too" Aggie said with a sigh.

"So you know Fiona too" I questioned a bit more relaxed finally.

"Yes I do but I want to hear more about your family, we will get back to Fiona in a bit" she sighed gently and sat back with her mug of tea, sipping it off and on as I continued to tell her the remaining information concerning my family.

I found myself picking up where I left off smiling as I told her about all my cousins and how every family get together ended up in complete chaos. Eight cousins and three siblings tend to make any occasion chaotic and wild. Aggie laughed loudly for the first time since we began this entire conversation which spurred me to continue on reminiscing about different holidays and how close we all were. I explained to her about my cousins Ryland and Rori, and how for the majority of our lives we have been inseparable. I told her how the three of us decided to go to the same college, where we rented an apartment and stayed together. I actually was closer to those two that anyone else including my brothers. Although I preferred to be a loner type person I always enjoyed spending time just the three of us when it was possible.

I leaned towards the coffee table and set my empty mug back onto the tray and told her that was pretty much my story. She sat forward and looked up at me like she wanted to ask me something but then looked away quickly and licked her lips in a nervous jester.

"What do you want to ask me" I chuckled as I asked her.

I knew there was nothing to joke about right now but the look on her face was amusing. After everything that had happened so far she was embarrassed to ask me something.

"Why have you not settled down" she questioned.

The same thing my parents were always asking me. The dreaded why are you not in a relationship or have a significant other. I sighed loudly, shutting my eyes for a moment wondering how I could explain this without sounding pathetic.

I reopened my eyes and looked Aggie straight in her soft brown eyes "Because I haven't found my soul mate, and to be honest something in me will not let me settle for just anyone".

I groaned louder than I anticipated as I looked away not able to make eye contact with her. She patted my leg with reassurance but I refused to look at her not wanting to see the pity or confusion that probably was written all over her face. She asked me to explain, and for whatever reason she made it easy to spill everything to her. I know that I wanted answers to what was going on and what was happening to me physically but talking about my family really was a better option until I could get my nerves and anger in check.

I sighed and rubbed my face as I told her how everyone thought I was crazy or that something was wrong with me because I never kept a girlfriend long. My brother Alex had even pulled me aside one day to tell me that if I was gay that my entire family was ready to accept it for they just wanted to see me happy. He told me that they thought because I was more of a lone wolf that it would do me good to be in any type of long term relationship. He even looked sad when I told him that I was not gay and I really, really liked women. To me there was never a question of my sexuality, I loved women and if they had ever asked my few girlfriends twenty questions they would find out that I was very sexual being that overly satisfied my female lovers. But of course they didn't and wouldn't so from the outside I am sure I presented something of the total opposite.

If only they understood the feeling I had deep in my soul that yearned for my soul mate maybe they would understand why I was struggling. How do you explain to your family, who all seem to have no problem with falling in love that there was a force that I could not even explain that pulled deep within and it would not let me settle with just anyone? Believe me there had been plenty that tried to get their claws into me whether it was for me or my family's business connections. I had tried to talk with my dad about it but he had blocked me out and told me that I needed to get the soul mate notion out of my head and find a nice girl and marry her, but I couldn't. I looked back at Aggie and saw her picking her nails and not looking at me.

"You think I am crazy or something else" I scoffed bitterly.

"No, I believe you" she said without looking up but smiling from ear to ear "I think that once you know the truth you will understand why you have this feeling you do and I think you have finally met her already".
