5) The Battle of Malta -I
Bearsk was riding high on a streak of victories, mightily defeating Suma then Kantos and strategically capturing Pantos. But unrest still surrounded General Erwin. As it's said, 'Greed is a fat demon with a small mouth and whatever you feed it is never enough.' He wanted to continue and expand his territory towards the enormous town of Malta.
Erwin was confident of his army, especially Tyler. But the brave General had not even thought of the consequences that the war could result into.
Malta was a very mysterious province. They had never opened the doors of their town for the outsiders and hence no one knew what happened there. They kept all their policies concealed. Malta was quite a technologically advanced and complex province as compared to the others. They had a massive weapon arsenal which included heat seeking missiles, low altitude fighter planes, and quite advanced guns which were never seen by any other province. Their soldiers were also heavily equipped with grenades which could pose a great deal of damage.
The General was completely unaware of the exploits of his opponents and had grown a tad too overconfident that the soldiers were not any better. Training was not taken that seriously. Soldiers were often getting vacations to see their families. There were talks among themselves about how strong their province was and no other province had the capacity to beat them.
It was inevitable. The downfall of Bearsk was knocking at its door.
Two days before the attack, Tyler and General Erwin were planning strategies for war.
Tyler said, "We don't know anything about them so we should prepare ourselves for worse." He wanted to divide the soldiers into 4 teams according to their strengths: first, the horseback offenders, second the good marksman, third, the trappers and bombers, and lastly, the defenders who can kill the soldiers which got past the first three levels.
Tyler also asked for a backup plan in case they failed. Erwin interrupted him by saying, "Mate, we will never fail if we have you in our army. We don't need a backup plan. We will defeat them much too easily."
Tyler was astonished to see this reaction from the General and didn't seem to agree with him, but decided to not to speak about it.
The next day when the soldiers were training, Tyler was restless. John noticed him and approached him. He asked Tyler, "Why are you looking so tense? Penny for your thoughts?"
Tyler replied, "I think the General had gotten a bit of overconfident. His approach to our next attack seems casual. He thinks we could defeat them easily but the truth is that we don't know anything about them. I've tried to spy on them but it was impossible. The entrance gate was heavily armed and there was no way I could've entered. If the entrance is that much guarded then think about what could be inside waiting for us. I also think that he is too much dependent on me and believes I can do anything."
John replied "Yeah, you are right. In the recent days I also could feel how light our training had become. It seems like we are coming here to play games not the drills. I am worried to know that General Erwin is behaving like this. Now listening to this I have become more worried about what will happen next."
At the day of war, Tyler was getting ready when he spotted the glove of honour and realised why Erwin was not suitable of it. He wore it and then headed out.
At the base, everyone was ready and before going and Erwin addressed his army.
"Dear my fellow soldiers, we are heading out for yet another war and now time for Malta's men to experience defeat. We just can't stop now. Our main motive should be to conquer every province and become the supreme. I would now like to make an important announcement. As you know, our previous captain got killed in the war against Kantos and we feel deeply sorry for it, but we need to move on, so I would like to announce our new captain of the army: Tyler Ross!
Now that Tyler was 'Captain Tyler', which was quite inevitable, he had some control of the army with him. He became the second most powerful in terms of decision making in the army now after Erwin.
The hour of the war arrived. The judgement day of Malta dawned bright and hot. The sun shone burningly in the war field. The Bearsk's army were ready to attack Malta's base and were standing right outside it's gate. While General Erwin was commanding his soldiers to attack just then the gates opened. Erwin as well as Tyler saw each other and were shocked. They didn't expect this and didn't know what Malta were hiding—a completely unexpected and a dumbfounding surprise for their opponents who arrived there blindly.
Before entering Tyler had a bad feeling He thought what could be inside Malta's base that they are spoon feeding us to win against them. He stopped the army and called out, "Soldiers! This can be a do or die situation for us, but we can't back out from here after coming this far. Our bravery could become doomsday for our opposition whereas something less than the extraordinary could turn the tables on."
The soldiers took their positions and were ready to attack. During the first half an hour everything was going normal, but a surprise awaited for them. Malta unleashed 28 brutal heat seeking missiles which wiped out a certainty large amount of Bearsk soldiers.Tyler and Erwin were shocked. Next came low altitude fighter planes and the soldiers wearing uranium protection armours. It seemed that Malta's army was playing with Bearsk's army. Tyler and Erwin hadn't seen any of these weapons in their lifetime. All the soldiers were bewildered. Bodies were piling at a very fast rate, a horrifying sight to say the least. It was time for Tyler to step up and do something new. He saw one of the low flying aircrafts heading towards him and he leaped towards it with the support of a large rock, breaking the cockpit window and killing the pilot. He then jumped off the plane. It wasn't enough as there were many of it. He commanded the shooting unit to aim for the cockpit and the soldiers started shooting at planes. It seemed that the plan was getting successful, but to ruin the moment, another 10 missiles were targeted towards the Bearsk army. This time Tyler was also in a close range of the missiles. He got struck by the flames of the missiles and got heavily injured. He was then unconsciously lying like a distorted corpse. When Erwin saw him he clenched his fist helplessly. He wanted to rescue him but couldn't as he was too busy fighting for his life.
Many soldiers died. The corpses of soldiers were spread everywhere in the field. Pools of blood formed in places. Only a handful of the Bearsk soldiers remained. Erwin was startled to see this. He commanded his remaining troops to retreat. Yes, it was officially a defeat for Bearsk, and General Erwin sulked at his mistake, thinking he should have listened to Tyler. While retreating back, Erwin was as silent as a grave. It was said right that "overconfidence can drown in the sea of reality."
He reached his province defeated, all his ego shattered. He felt guilty of losing Tyler and all of his brave soldiers. He thought himself as a completely naïve person. The people of Bearsk started to oppose him and demanded resignation from him. There was an outburst of anger and rage among families who lost their loved ones. They slammed the poor decision making of the General. Even the king wouldn't help Erwin.
A month past no one had forgotten the horrors of the war, especially General Erwin, who was still feeling guilty for losing Tyler. To his shock, a letter was soon sent to him from Malta. It stated:
Defeating you last month was really a pleasuring feeling. I thought that your army was much more capable than what they showed us. I hope that the memory is still fresh in your mind. If we wanted to then we could destroy your whole army, but we pitied you. Anyways, let's get straight to the point. We have many of your soldiers in captivity. If you want them safe and sound, then surrender yourself and your province. We will leave you and all of your soldiers. We are giving you a time of 3 days to decide. The ball's in your court now. Surrender or we will slay them and send their bodies to you.
This letter left General Erwin flabbergasted. He was furious after reading the letter, but that anger was a waste. He realised that this would not help him. He didn't know what to do. He couldn't let his soldiers die, but also didn't want to surrender. He knew that all this was his mistake and has to face it's repercussions.
"That's the kind of person I am," Erwin murmured to himself.
