The Apologies

Sindri gave her all the food she needed, and even when Hilda tried to share with Níðhögg, the enormous beast made sure she ate it instead. She refused to eat it like she knew Hilda was on the brink of starving to death. Atreus also made her eat a lot before him, which Kratos could tell she didn't like, but it was necessary to ensure her body didn't reject her powers again. Kratos and Atreus didn't talk much while she was eating; it was like the tension was still there, and she was caught in the middle of it.

She was, in a way, due to being Odin's child and Kratos not trusting her, which she completely understood. He didn't know if she said anything about his dreams or past, but Atreus came home, so maybe she didn't say anything.

"Okay, so I have eaten ten bowls of soup. Can we please go now before the world ends?" Hilda asked.

"Before you go, I have more arrows for you, Atreus. Hilda's old arrows do work well, but they might not be strong enough to deal with some of the creatures there," Sindri said as he gave more arrows to Atreus.

"Thank you, father," Hilda said as she started taking off the Asgard armor and putting on the armor he gave her.

"I'm sorry I didn't try to stop you," Sindri told Hilda.

"I have had worse, now don't worry about me, okay? Worry about Brok; he got hurt. Also, I would maybe destroy this Asgard armor. Odin gave it to us so that it might be made out of stolen material," Hilda informed.

"I'll see who made it; good luck Hilda," he said as she nodded.

"I love you, Sindri; tell Brok I love him too," Hikda said as he returned to the house, only to fall to her knees.

"Hilda, maybe you should stay home," Atreus said as she looked at her worried.

"I'm just... I just got up way too fast, that's all. I maybe not be a hundred percent, but I'm not saying in a place where Týr is. I don't trust him, and I don't like the way he looks at me or the fact that they blame you for releasing Garm when it wasn't your fault. You didn't know. I could have stopped you, but I didn't. So the blame is also on me. We fix this together or not at all," Hilda informed.

"Okay, feel better now?" Atreus asked as he held out a hand for her.

"Yeah, thanks," she said as he helped her with Níðhögg's help.

"Thanks, girl, go be with your family. We will make sure no one gets hurt," she informed as she petted her.

They started to head out, and Atreus thought it was odd that Kratos wasn't telling him how badly he messed up, but he probably didn't want to do it in front of Hilda.

"You aren't going to tell me how badly I messed up or how I should have done better?" Atreus asked as Hilda sighed, knowing they would talk or argue the whole way. Either way, she would not leave them to fight Garm alone.

"No, I am relieved you both are safe," Kratos informed.

"Wow, maybe I should run away more often," Atreus said, making Hilda immediately hit him in the balls.

"Atreus," Kratos said.

"I was kidding," Atreus said as Hilda looked at him.

"How does that still hurt? I'm wearing armor," he said.

"Your balls will never be safe from me; I hope you know that," Hilda said, making him look at her a bit terrified.

"I don't like the sound of that,' he said as she smiled.

"Oh, you will, and sometimes you won't, depending on if you're a bad boy or not," she smirked.

"Hilda, my dad is here!" Atreus whispered.

"Well, you decided to kid around," she informed.

"So, where did the new spear come from?" Atreus asked.

"Brok made it from Dropmire. It's a ring," Kratos informed.

"Oh, what's its story?" Atreus asked.

"I do not know; you weren't there to ask. I didn't care to know," Kratos informed as they ended up in Helheim, where they saw Garm running wild.

"If Odin, I don't know, were nice to him, maybe he wouldn't be such a problem?" Hilda said.

"Did Odin ask you to free the creature?" Kratos asked.

"What?" Atreus asked.

"Are you not working with him?" Kratos asked.

"No, it's not what you think," Atreus said.

"Whatever he promised, he can not be trusted," Kratos informed.

"Oh, boy, he tried to get me to marry Atreus! Son of a bitch tried to sell me off like I was a cow or a piece of meat. I can see right threw him, and he also has a weird obsession with my mother. I look too much like her, well, except for the hair. Apparently, she had black hair before he drugged her," Hilda informed.

"I don't trust him, but he has something I need. It's hard to explain," Atreus informed.

"No, it's not; just talk it out. Look, you both need to talk, so I won't talk the whole way until you figure this out. You two are family. My family is all kinds of screwed up; I mean, I'm not even supposed to be here, and my powers are trying to murder me for some unknown reason that probably makes about as much sense as, well, I can't think of anything at the moment, but I can tell you that it wouldn't make any sense. So talk, or I will make you," Hilda informed.

"Hilda," Atreus said.

"No, you two talk. Do you understand me?" She asked as Atreus wiped some blood off her face from a cut.

"Yeah, I was going to tell you that you were bleeding. Just stay calm and don't stress out, okay? We got this," Atreus said.

They climbed the side of a wall, and when they got done, they fought some help walkers.

"You said it's hard to explain. Why?" Kratos asked.

"I just need you to trust me; I know I have no right to ask. But can you anyway?" Atreus asked, making Hilda want to spank him hard, but then Atreus looked at Hilda, and she knew he didn't realize how Kratos would feel about her powers or that both of them were going to die.

"What does he have that you need? Why can you not tell me?" Kratos asked.

"It's complicated. Why do you have a new weapon? I thought you didn't want war," Atreus said as they climbed another ledge and got across a huge Gao in their path.

"I don't, but," he paused.

"It's complicated?" Atreus asked as Hilda was getting very tired of this, but she had to keep her mouth shut until they figured it out independently.

"Sometimes keeping secrets keeps the ones we love safe. Sometimes it's the only way you can; also, don't worry about Odin; I'm not going back there," Atreus informed.

"That is good to hear," Kratos said as they went threw a small tunnel and saw a large opening to see Garm going crazy.

"Well, hello there," Hilda said as she saw the wolf jumping off in the distance, but they had a realm tear to deal with.

"Cool realm tear, we better get some of these before they go out of style," Hilda informed as Atreus looked at her and smirked.

"Come on, I know this is bad, but at least we are closer to Garm," she informed.

"I'll try to close the tear. Can you both keep the enemies away?" Atreus asked.

"No, it's just too hard," Hilda said as she smiled and took out her sword.

"You are being very sarcastic like Brok; you know that?" Atreus informed.

"Well, like father like daughter," Hilda informed.

"We can," Kratos informed as they started to kill enemies.

"Okay, it's closed. Are you feeling okay, Hilda?" Atreus asked as she nodded.

"So glad that Sindri put a lot of extra food in my bag because I'm starting to get hungry again," she said.

"How?" Atreus asked.

"Does it look like I know what my powers are doing? I know that they want me dead, and that's not good," Hilda informed.

"Thank you for helping me," Atreus said to Kratos.

"I will help as long as possible; I am your father," Kratos said.

"Well, that is good to hear, too," Atreus said.

"Tell me. What were you doing in Asgard?" Kratos asked.

"I was translating things for Odin. There was a mask he found and a magic tear," Atreus said as he was going to go more in-depth.

"It's complicated?" Kratos asked.

"Yeah," Atreus informed.

"But I met people my age there; I made friends. I think we are still friends," Atreus said as they had to cross a large valley after several minutes of climbing and to walk.

"You can not trust the people loyal to Odin," Kratos informed.

"It's not always bad to trust people. I trust Hilda," he said.

"Trusting people compromises your judgment; she is different," Kratos informed.

"Maybe, but I'm tired of feeling alone. I know you don't trust Hilda. I'm tired of feeling alone; she has kept me from doing stupid stuff, especially in Asgard," Atreus informed.

"Atreus, I," Kratos paused.

"Let's figure out how this gate works," Atreus said.

"Well, lucky you; I got a stone here that Sindri gave me," Hilda smiled.

"Oh yeah, I already forgot about that," Atreus informed as she was about to use it.

"Wait! Don't use your magic; if you use your magic, it could make your body trick itself into starvation. We will have to figure it out the old fashion way," Atreus said.

"We don't have time for that," Hilda said.

"Well, you aren't using your powers! I'm not letting you do that," Atreus informed.

"Fine, well, we can't just plow right threw it; we don't know what's back there," she sighed.

"Well, I know what's not back there," Atreus smiled.

"Oh yeah?" Hilda asked.

"Yeah, us," he said as she rolled her eyes.

"No, duh!" She said as Kratos managed to open the gate with Atreus's help.

They started fighting monsters, but they were quickly taken care of.

"Did you see that? Garm is tearing this whole realm apart!" Atreus said, seeing Garm.

"Yeah, he's not too happy," Hilda said.

"We got to stop him; this is all my fault," Atreus sighed as Hilda patted him on the shoulder.

"Our mistake; now let's go," she informed as they continued their journey.

"We fuck," Hilda said as she escaped a nightmare.

"We fuck?" Atreus asked.

"I didn't say anything," Hilda informed as Atreus could have sworn she said that.

"Hilda, can I see your wrists for a second?" He asked as she started to take off her armor.

"Yeah, why?" She asked as he checked her wrists; they were excellent, but he could have sworn she said something.

"Just making sure you are alright," he said; she put her armor back on.

"I'm fine! Stop worrying. I'm not here, remember?" She asked, making Kratos see Atreus seeing her differently, and it showed.

"Atreus, I do not want you to feel alone, but your decision to go to Asgard... help me understand," Kratos said as Atreus put some space between himself and Hilda, then they started climbing.

"Odin doesn't want Ragnarok; I know I can't trust him, but I needed his help. I don't want Ragnarok to happen either," Atreus informed.

"I would have helped you," Kratos said as they went to a ledge.

"I know, but wait, he's right here!" Atreus said happily as Hilda saw him and realized how big he was.

"Not going to lie, if I had a wolf like that, he would be getting pets all day long," she smiled.

"Let me talk to him, okay," Atreus said as she nodded.

Atreus tried to talk to him, but he didn't seem interested in what he had to say. Garm seemed interested in eating the hel-walkers and throwing them around like rag dolls. Garm got close to Atreus but quickly ran off after smelling him.

"You know his eyes look weird," Hilda informed.

"He's from here; he was probably born like that," Atreus said as she felt she had seen or heard of it before.

"It's quiet here; I don't trust any quiet places," Hilda informed.

"If Odin truly wishes to stop Ragnarok, qe agree?" Kratos asked as Hilda raised her hands like Kratos didn't even hear her talk.

"Yeah? But what's that spear for?" Atreus asked.

"To protect you," Kratos informed.

"Don't you have other weapons for that?" Atreus asked.

"Well, if you want to see the whole picture, that duplicates, right? So if it does, that means he can take more enemies out, and it cuts back the retrieving time, so there is more damage around plus, if you can do so many spears at once, no one will be able to tell if you are coming and going," Hilda informed as Atreus looked at Hilda.

"Are you sure you are feeling okay?" Atreus asked.

"Yeah? I have never felt better. Which means I'm not okay, am I?" Hilda asked.

"You just don't sound like yourself when you explained the spear; I don't know; I could just be worried," he said.

"Well, stop it before you worry to death," she said.

"If you aren't preparing for Ragnarok, why the spear seriously?" Atreus asked as they continued to walk around and found their way to the Shipyard of the fallen.

"I will not kill the boy; I will not kill the boy; why won't they just talk to each other? It's not that hard. I always talk to Sindri about my problems and fears, but I am a girl. Men! Why are they so complicated?" She asked herself as she heard Kratos say I'm the parent.

"Cool a door! I call fixing it!" Hilda said.

"That requires magic, and you can't use magic right now," Atreus informed as Hilda sighed.

"I hate being so useless!" Hilda said as she kicked the gate.

"Promise you will not kill Garm. I want to try it my way first," Atreus said once they got threw.

"I make no promises, but I will try not to kill the beast," Kratos said.

"What is your plan?" Kratos asked.

"I'm sort of making it up as I go," Atreus informed.

"I plan not to die here and not use my magic since it wants me dead. Simple yet effective," Hilda said as Atreus smiled.

"Hilda, you might have to sit this out," Atreus informed.

"No way in hell will I do that!" She informed him as Garm had destroyed some of the walls.

"What is your plan now?" He asked.

"I am going to tame him," Atreus said as Hilda thought about it for a second.

"Tame him?" Kratos asked.

"Yeah, why not? I have tamed wolves before," Atreus informed.

"I don't think you can tame something that doesn't have a soul. I mean, I could be wrong, but I don't think he has a soul you can talk to, Atreus," Hilda informed.

"Hopefully, you're wrong," Atreus said as they went threw a small gap and saw Garm was in an area where they could trap him.

"Okay, I will distract Garm; you grab his chain and hook him onto something," Atreus said.

"No! It's too dangerous," Kratos informed.

"Come on; it's a great plan!"Atreus said as he turned into a wolf, leaving the two of them behind.

"This better work. I'm not fond of killing wolves," Hilda said.

"This plan will fail!" Kratos said.

"It might, but we won't know unless we try," Hilda smiled as she went to get the chain.

Kratos quickly grabbed the chain, but Garm yanked it away from them. Gold ropes appeared around his feet and neck, but he promptly got free and climbed onto a pillar of stone, then broke it. Kratos quickly grabbed Hilda and got her out of the way and made sure Atreus got out of the way as well.

"Are you alright?" Kratos asked, but Hilda coughed up blood.

"Are you two okay?" Atreus yelled as he went over to see Hilda bleeding.

"No, not again! Hilda, I told you not to use your powers!" Atreus said as Kratos saw cuts starting to form on her face. Her eyes and mouth were also bleeding, and her nose made Atreus panic.

"I didn't; it just happened by itself. I managed to stop it this time, but I don't feel so good," Hilda said as she started throwing up blood again.

"Does Odin know about her powers? Did Odin also teach you to transform?" Kratos asked.

"Odin knows about her powers now; it wasn't this bad. But it got worse, and he found out. Odin also didn't teach me to transform," Atreus said as he got into her bag and grabbed cloth wraps to fix her up the best he could.

"We will not rely on what he taught you; next time, we are doing it my way. We are also taking her home; she is a danger to herself and us," Kratos informed. Atreus was trying not to get mad, but he was right.

"Yes, sir. What hurts Hilda?" Atreus asked.

"I can't feel my arms again," she said as he took off her armor carefully and saw a significant slash on her stomach which was like Kratos's scar that he had.

"Let me see her arm," Kratos said as Atreus rolled up her sleeve and saw the chain marks were bleeding and some cuts were to the bone.

They were healing quickly, though, and Kratos sighed, knowing that Atreus wouldn't let her out of his sight. She was a danger to them and herself, but after a couple of minutes, she was healed, just covered in blood.

"I won't do anything this time," Hilda informed as she wore her armor.

"Good, I don't want you dead," Atreus said as they continued their journey.

"I'm sorry it didn't work. I thought it would," Atreus informed.

"Patience, I'll find a way," Kratos informed.

"How long has your excessive bleeding been occurring?" Kratos asked.

"The entire time we were in Asgard. It was weird. At first, it was just a little; then, it was a lot. Atreus tried to hide it from Odin and Thor; he even told me to hide my powers and stay with Atreus. He told me that he wouldn't be able to protect me from him if I was alone with Odin," Hilda said.

"Thor said that?" Atreus asked.

"Yeah, he couldn't stop what happened to my mother, but he was giving me a chance to be smart. It's not like I was going to leave you with Odin; the guy has the biggest liar and manipulates written all over him," she explained.

"We do this my way now, and it means what you think it means," Kratos said as they saw the wolf again.

"Okay, let's dance," Hilda said.

They started fighting the wolf, and after an intense battle, Kratos managed to kill him. He wrapped the chain around the beast's neck, and a rock snapped his neck. It felt like hours that they were trying to kill him, and now he was gone making Hilda feel as if he wasn't gone.

"I'm sorry, Atreus, I didn't want him to die either, but he had to," Hilda said.

"This is all my fault; he didn't deserve this," Atreus said as Hilda sighed.

"It was our fault, but at least we made it quick," Hilda informed.

"Sometimes there is no other way," Kratos informed.

"I know," Atreus said.

"Close my heart to it," Atreus muttered, making Hilda upset that Kratos would tell him to do that.

"While you were away, I visited the norms, and they told me Heimdall planned to kill you in Asgard," Kratos informed.

"Heimdall? The norms?" Atreus asked.

"Also, Hilda had visited several times. I am not sure if she was aware of it," Kratos informed as Atreus looked at her.

"That's why you spaced out; you went to him. But why?" Atreus asked.

"I do not know the reasons, but she helped some at the cost of her blood," Kratos informed.

"Well, that can't be good," Hilda said.

"You made a shield, and it protected me," Kratos said as they headed out.

"I don't remember any of that," Hilda informed.

"You even spoke to us," Kratos informed.

"I think I remember that," Hilda said.

"You said you thought you called him a nitwit or something," Atreus informed as they were going to go through a door but heard a roar.

"I think we pissed him off," Hilda informed.

"How?" Kratos asked as they started running.

"He doesn't have a soul!" Hilda yelled as they ran as fast as they could to escape him, but they quickly got away.

"How do you know he doesn't have a soul?" Kratos asked.

"His eyes don't look like regular eyes. I mean, eyes are the windows to the soul, right?" Hilda asked. Kratos pushed her out of the way, and he took out Kratos and threw him.

"Round two!" Hilda said as they quickly started to fight him.

"I have an idea!" Atreus yelled.

"What is your idea?" Hilda asked.

"My knife has a soul in it!" Atreus yelled.

"I know, but you don't know whose soul is there!" She informed.

"What do you need us to do?!" Kratos asked as Atreus quickly told him the plan.

Atreus quickly got on top of Garm and said a spell, and stabbed the knife into him.

Hilda quickly caught Atreus, and they both hit the ground hard as Garm ran away.

"Thanks for the catch," Atreus said.

"What are friends for?" She asked as they got up and went to find him.

"What happened?" Kratos asked.

"At the house when Fenrir died. I didn't know it then, but I put his soul in my knife," Atreus said.

"Oh my gosh! I would love to meet him; you talked about him a lot. I guess I get my chance after all," Hilda said with a smile.

"When you were in Midgard before Feaya attacked, you said you needed to protect me; why?" Kratos asked.

"I saw a prophecy that you were dead in my arms, Hilda turned into a monster, and she was killed, too," Atreus informed.

"I saw my death too," Kratos informed.

"That's why you were training me so hard," Atreus informed.

"One day will have to survive without me," Kratos informed.

"No, I won't let that happen," Atreus said.

"Journies come to an end," Kratos said.

"Not ours," Atreus said.

"I said that about my mother, Atreus. You know, if it happens, it happens. Our choices form our fate. People change, or they just don't," Hilda said, "I'm glad my mother didn't; she gave me something irreplaceable, and I'm thankful for that. We should go find your pet, don't you think?"

They went to find Fenrir, and to their surprise, he was hiding from them, but who could blame him? Atreus got him out, and Hilda held out her hand to him.

"Hi, you sweet, beautiful boy! You know Atreus told me all about you! Oh my goodness, you are the sweetest thing ever!" Hilda smiled.

"Sit!" Kratos ordered as he saw him, and he sat.

"Nice giant magic, Atreus; maybe you could teach me some time," she smiled as she continued to pet him.

"Oh, I love you! I hope you know that you are so sweet," she said as he licked her.

"You should go home; we will return for you, okay?" Hilda asked.

"Home!" Kratos ordered, making him get up and head home.

"You have been learning things in Asgard?" Kratos asked.

"No, I'm not trying to keep secrets, but I made a promise just like the one you made to mom," Atreus said as Hilda watched him leave.

"See what I can do when you trust me," Atreus said as Hilda sighed and went to Atreus.

"We should head back; we got a lot of work to do," Hilda informed.

"Wait, Hilda, we have to tell him what's going on with you," Atreus said as she looked at him worried.

"What is wrong with you?" Kratos asked as Hilda looked over at Atreus, worried.

"Hey, I'm here. It's not that bad," Atreus said.

"You are kidding, right? It is bad!" Hilda informed.

"I still think you look beautiful. Do my opinions not matter to you?" Atreus asked as Hilda looked down at the ground and put away her weapons.

"Okay," she said as she took off the spell.

All of her hair was black, and all her veins were black now, as well as her nails and eyes. She looked at Kratos, and he wasn't showing any emotion about it, even though her skin was deathly gray.

"See, not that bad," Atreus said with a smile.

She looked away from him, seeing how pale she was, and pushed him away, seeing how sick she looked.

"Hilda, I don't care about this. You know I love you, right? If it's permanently okay, that's fine. It's a piece of you; you love me even though I'm stupid. I mean, I'm sure you only like me because I'm so good-looking," Atreus said as she laughed.

"What am I not good-looking? Not only am I stupid but also ugly I don't understand why you love me," he said as she laughed.

"Because you are you, and you are really good-looking for a boy," Hilda smiled.

"Oh yeah, I'm the best-looking guy in all of the nine realms, maybe the whole world," he said as she laughed harder.

"Wow, such a big ego," she smiled as he hugged her.

"Maybe, but no matter how big it gets, you will bring me back to my senses," he smiled as she smiled.

"I hope so; I mean, you are tough to handle," she smiled as all the started disappearing.

They pulled away, and he paused.

"Hey, did you put your spell on?" He asked.

"No, why?" She asked.

"Your hair it's blond!" He said happily.

"How did you do that?" She asked.

"I don't know! But this is awesome! You can maybe use your powers!" He said happily.

"Sweet! I knew you wouldn't give up on me," she smiled.

"You two are together?" Kratos asked.

"For a while, ever since she got sick," Atreus said softly.

"I'm glad," Kratos informed.

"You aren't upset?" Atreus asked.

"No, you are happy with her?" He asked.

"I am, yeah," Atreus smiled.

"Let's go home! I have to tell Sindri now!" She smiled as they started to head home.

"So the reason why you got the spear was because of the norms; you aren't a good killer anymore, are you? You don't want war," Atreus said.

"I'm not," he informed.

"If you don't trust the fates, why go get it?' He asked.

"I can't any chance with you," he informed as they made it to the gate, and Hilda uncovered it with help.

"I have been falling back into my old ways; I pushed you away. I wasn't ready for you to be a man," Kratos said.

"Without you, I got reckless, and I thought I could do everything even with Hilda; you were right; I wasn't ready," Atreus informed.

"You were ready; you accomplished so much I was not ready for it," he informed.

"You don't have to change because I'm gone. How about we make a promise? I promise to listen to your voice when I'm not with you to help me find my way, and you do the same. I need to know you will be okay without me," Atreus said as he walked away from his father.

"Atreus, I am sorry," Kratos said.

"Don't be sorry, be better," Atreus said, making Hilda smile as he went to face his father.

"I am also sorry for how I acted toward you. Your family is not your fault," Kratos informed.

"You don't ever have to apologize to me. I know already. Can we go home? I don't want Odin to find us here," she smiled.
