Responsibility (Ch36)
"Sindri, you can't go looking for her by yourself!" Mimir informed.
"I have to, Hilda is hurt, and worst of all, she may be alone! She could have ended up anyway, even in Asgard!" He explained.
"We will find her and Atreus Sindri. You have my word," Fraya informed.
"Your word means nothing to me right now, loo,k I'm sorry about what happened, but Hilda will find a way to get to Atreus. She feels responsible for him and will do whatever it takes to get him back or be with him so nothing wrong happens to him. I can't let her do that anymore; your son is a danger to him. Plus, now you insulted her and wished she wasn't here. She had nothing to do with this, and you dragged her in it when she was trying to keep Atreus calm.
Hilda could have easily kept her son here with her powers, but she didn't use them on him because she wanted to prove to everyone here that she didn't need to. Now she is gone, and where ever she is, Odin will find her and maybe kill her, so thank you all for calling my daughter a monster," Sindri said as he started packing his things.
"Sindri, we didn't call her a monster," Fraya informed.
"You may not have said it,t but since Kratos found out she was Odin's child, it was like she wasn't a friend to him anymore. Look, I have to find my daughter, I don't care what you think of her, but she is nothing like Odin. Atreus has feelings for her... I see it; I saw it anyway. Hilda, I know, cares about him. If she didn't, she wouldn't have let him hurt her like that," Sindri informed.
"She clouds his mind," Kratos informed.
"Are you so sure of that? I have never seen Hilda try so hard to let her guard down with anyone. Not with me, not even with Brok. I'm sure without her around; I would have run away before you even got here. Sow, if you excuse me, I got to go," Sindri said, grabbing an extra seed for the door.
"We will go find them," Kratos informed.
"Sindri, if you leave here, Odin might kill you. If those two are separated, he will find one of them, most likely Atreus, and take him. Then Odin will use him to get to Hilda; we will look for them. But you are right; Hilda will look for Atreus because she feels responsible for him. She has proved that much; she might be with him right now," Fraya reassured.
"If she dies, I hope you know I will never forgive you for that, and I hope the last words you said to her haunt you for the rest of your lives because they will be," Sindri said as he put his bag down.
"We might need to find a cave to warm up in," Hilda said as they walked.
"Yeah, Hilda, um, about what Mimir said, I'm sorry," Atreus apologized.
"You think my feelings get hurt that easily? I have been told worse than that," she explained.
"Worse? How can that be any worse than that?" Atreus asked.
"You will end up like your mother; you will never find love because you give your body to anyone and everyone that looks at you; you deserved those scares because all you wanted was sex, and whoever gave you those wouldn't give it to you," she said as Atreus sighed.
"I shouldn't have asked, Hilda. What do you think I should do?" Atreus asked.
"Wait until we get somewhere warm okay? Then we talk about it," she smiled.
Monsters started to appear, making them both happy they could keep warmer by fighting. It was nice that they worked together so well instead of arguing all the time, but even though she was arguing with both Sindri and Atreus, she kept calm and tried hard to be an adult about the situation. Hilda tried to explain how she felt about it rather than say she was right and he was wrong. The air started to blow, making them both cold again after they killed the last monster, and Hilda left a marker on a tree to let Sindri know where she was.
"I know we are in Midgard, but I thought I recognized this place, but I don't. It may just be the snow throwing me off," Atreus informed.
"So we need to go to the higher ground then?" Hilda asked.
"Yeah, maybe we should fire once we find a cave or something," Atreus suggested.
"Good idea," she said with a smile.
"That was a bit sarcastic, wasn't it?" He asked as she chuckled.
"No, me sarcastic? I'm never sarcastic," she joked.
This was why he loved her; no matter how bad a situation was, she could still joke and find the good in it rather than focus on all the negative parts of it. Plus, he loved her smile and laughter.
"Good because I could never marry anyone with a sense of humor," he chuckled, but the thought of his father crept into his mind, "I was trying to save him, and my father was being a complete jerk about it."
"Hey, I know it's hard, okay? But you chose this path yourself; I didn't force you to do anything or even really try to stop you, so that part is my fault, but both are you are right. In some aspects, both of you are wrong, you are wrong for not telling the truth, and he is wrong for not letting you make your own mistakes. Hell, I have made plenty, and if it weren't for Sindri, I wouldn't have. I would have learned to protect people I cared about; I would be a dumb ass and probably try to convince you how wrong you are instead of talking about it and trying to find a middle ground," Hilda informed.
"I just... he lied to me too. He almost killed me by not telling me the truth. My mother died because she lied about who and what she was. We had to figure it out because it was written on the stupid wallmuste to protect what I have left; I can't lose you or my father, even if I'm mad at him. I won't be mad forever," he sighed.
They heard Ravens, and that made Atreus freeze in his place. Hilda got out her bow, and Atreus looked at her sadly. Odin knew she was here, and it was a matter of time before he found her and maybe killed her. He couldn't take that chance; he had to do something fast.
"Tell Odin if he so much as hurts Hilda, he will bring a war down on himself!" Atreus yelled.
"Atreus, shush! Look, I hate to say it, but we might need to split up," Hilda informed.
"I'm not leaving you alone in Midgard, Odin wants you dead, and he will find a way to do it," Atreus informed.
"Yet he hasn't killed me yet because he knows already. He knows you will kill him for hurting me also; you said I was supposed to turn into a monster, right?" Hilda asked.
"Yeah," Atreus informed.
"What if that love potion he gave my mom affected my powers but not in a good way? I can make my thoughts real, so maybe I can make nightmares too. That's probably why my eyes turned black," she explained.
"But you were awake," Atreus said as the ravens started moving away from them.
"Who was sleeping when my eyes turned black?" She asked as Atreus looked behind him.
"You think you are still connected to them somehow?" Atreus asked.
"Well, if I'm connected to you, you said it yourself. You felt my pain when I drifted off for that moment. If the nightmare was strong enough, it might turn into its beast that I can't control," Hilda said.
"That is a lot of Ifs, though, Hilda," Atreus said softly.
"But Odin asked you to come to Asgard, and you are good with Language; you didn't get your animal powers till much later. It makes sense, a monster made out of people's nightmares and a boy good with language. Seems like to me he has a spell he can't figure out," Hilda said.
"If that is the case, it would be a good idea for me to go to Asgard; I could maybe reverse it or destroy it so no one could ever use it. He can't take both of us," Atreus sighed.
"Are you one hundred percent sure you want to split up?" Hilda asked.
"No, but Sindri needs to find you. I am ninety-five percent sure he won't hurt me. But you, I'm not," Atreus said as he put his bow away.
"Okay, I go halfway, and you have to choose if you want to go to Asgard. I know you are trying to protect me but Atreus being with Odin is dangerous. I won't be able to protect or talk to you since you don't have my book. You will be all alone physically anyway," she sighed as Atreus looked down at the ground.
"I just, either way, we have no options; he might figure out the spell or hurt you to get to me. I just don't know what to do, Hilda. I don't know if I can do any of this alone," he explained.
"You can; you have to trust the thing that is beating in your chest and your brain that is in your head, not the one down south but the brain I fell in love with, even if it is very confusing," she said as she put her things away.
"Can I think about us splitting up and maybe halfway to where I am suposed to go? I will give you my answer, and once I do, there isn't going back. No matter what I say, don't try to talk me out of it," he smiled weakly.
"You know I won't even if I did. You wouldn't listen to me. As I said, this is your life, but whatever choices you make, you have to be prepared for the consequences that follow," Hilda said as he nodded.
"I will be, hopefully," he sighed as they continued walking.
Atreus wanted to kick a log out of the way, but when he couldn't do it alone, he decided to push it with all his might before Hilda could help him. Atreus fell and tried to catch him but ended up losing on top of him.
"You need to stop falling for me," Atreus said as she got off him.
"You were the one that was like; I'm big strong man child. I can push big log away with all my body weight forgetting what goes into motion stays in motion," she said, trying to imitate his voice.
"That sounds nothing like me!" He laughed.
"How about now? Grrrr," Hilda said as she flexed her arms, making him laugh.
"Okay, you are the only one able to make fun of me and get away with it," he said as they continued to walk.
"Do you ever make fun of yourself? I do it a lot because sometimes I think that if you don't, then you aren't having fun," she said as he smiled.
"You are something else, Hilda; you know I would have never thought you were funny when we first met," he said with a sigh.
"That was because I thought you were from Asgard also; I thought you would flirt with me and never stop. You didn't do that, and you have a great ass," Hilda chuckled as she smacked his butt.
"Stop it! You are embarrassing me! Why do you even like my butt; that's weird!" He said.
"Because it's yours? Any more questions I can answer for you?" She asked.
"No, just wish I knew sooner that you liked to flirt," he informed.
"You don't like it?" Hilda asked.
"No, I do. It's just... I guess I never thought I could have something like this, you know? I mean a girlfriend that cared about me. So many gods had arranged marriages, so I guess I thought I was going to have the same thing. I mean, I knew my father didn't, but that doesn't mean anything," he said as she smiled.
"Well, your father is different, and knowing him, he would rather fight every God in existence than you have that," she said as they walked by a frozen stream.
"We need to find shelter. Your hands are getting red, Hilda," Atreus informed.
"I'm okay; it's like I have never taken an ice bath before," she chuckled.
"You have done that? Why?" He asked.
"Monsters coming up from the ice," she said as more ravens cawed overhead, and he looked at her sadly.
"You don't even have to say it, Atreus," she said as Atreus felt his heart breaking.
"I just- I just want to keep you safe. If we are separated, it will take him a long to find us. Maybe Sindri will even find you," Atreus informed as she smiled.
"You know I also have one of those seeds, right? I can use it to get home if I need to," she said, ad he still didn't feel good about it.
"I'm so; so sorry, Hilda," he said as she smiled.
"Don't be, we all have to make mistakes, and I will always be with you, Atreus. Plus, we will see each other again for better or worse. You can't get rid of me; I'm your girlfriend and will be for a long time," she said as she kissed his cheek.
"Okay... is it a bad thing that I'm scared?" He asked.
"No, like my mother used to tell me, being scared doesn't make you weak. It just means you have to face it and not hide from it. Also, make sure you listen to what your father tells you. It will help you because it helped me," she said as Atreus took a deep breath.
"Okay, I think I'm ready," he said as he held her arrow tightly.
"Okay, see you later, Atreus," she said as she hugged him tightly and left
"Bye, I love you," Atreus said.
"I love you too," she smiled as she headed to find a gate.
Tears were running down her face as she walked away from him. Hilda knew he had to figure his life out without her help. He couldn't rely on her for every answer or to help him make decisions because she knew what she would have done differently threw out all of this. Atreus continued to head where ever he was going. Then he saw red leaves, which meant Frayas house was nearby. He quickly ran to the house only to find the sweet turtle Charlie not moving, and he looked dead.
"No, Charlie! Wake up, Charlie!" Atreus yelled as he tried to help him.
Charlie woke up, but he wasn't in good shape, and he was cold. He could hear him thinking about the cold, and he wished Hilda was here to help this big guy. She would have loved him and would have helped him stand. After Atreus tried to help him stand, he stood up enough for him to get inside the house. He quickly made a fire to start warming them both up. He couldn't believe that Fraya had left him like this. He closed the window and then locked it. He talked with Charlie, and he felt horrible about all this that had happened. If he had known, he would have checked up on him himself. He cared for the giant animal deeply.
"You're welcome; where do I go from here?" Atreus asked as Charlie told him to stay.
"I can't stay even if I wanted to. I can't let my dad die, or my girlfriend turns into a monster," he said weakly as Charlie started talking to him again.
"Hilda is her name. You would like her. She is best friends with the creature that guards the tree's roots and her babies. She loves animals and gives great advice when I need it. She almost killed me the first time I met her, but she calmed down a lot. I wish she were here, but she told me I had to make my path, my own choices. But I don't know which one is right," he sighed as Charlie asked him why she wasn't with him.
"Odin wants her dead or to turn her into a monster; I can't let that happen, so we split up, and she is heading back home, hopefully," he answered.
He heard clicking on the window and opened it to see it was a raven. He sighed, knowing it was hard for him and Charlie was nervous.
"It's okay. He's here for me; I will be fine, I think," Atreus said as he thought about Hilda.
If he left, it would; Odin would be so focused on him that Hilda could get away and get home, maybe. The Raven flew in, and Atreus hoped Hilda wouldn't be mad at him. But he had to save her; he had to save his father too.
"Okay, I'm ready; take me to him," Atreus said as the raven called more ravens, and they started to fly around him quickly until he disappeared.
"Shit," Hilda said as she realized she didn't have a stone to take her home.
"Okay, don't be upset. You are alone, but you aren't lost. Sindri knows you better than anyone, and he will find you. Wait, I have my book; I can tell him," Hilda said as she got out her book and was about to write in it when the Einherjar came out of nowhere, and she dropped her book.
"Oh no, you son of a bitch! You wanted Atreus to leave me alone to finish what you started. Fine! Be that way, but I hope you know Atreus will not be happy with you once he finds out you hurt me," she said, getting out her sword.
