New Doors (Ch4)
Hilda took a deep breath as she climbed down the mountainsides. This whole time Sindri never said a word about helping that stupid kid! Atreus should have gone to his father first because he would have helped tight. That's what dads did; they helped their kids, but it's not like she had one
"Idiots! I can't believe they did this! I would have gladly helped if Sindri had told me. Also, I would have said Kratos... he could have killed me, but if my mom was here, that's what she would have done," she muttered as a rope wrapped around her leg and pulled her off the mountainside.
A half-human, and half-deer came to draw on the string again, pissing her off. She got out her axe and cut the cord before getting up.
"You picked the wrong day to piss me off!" She growled as an arrow hit the creature.
"Skjalfa!" Atreus yelled and fired another arrow.
She took out both arrows and quickly stabbed the thing in the neck with both arrows, then chopped off its head.
"Skjalfa yourself!" She yelled as he looked down at her.
"Are you okay? I heard you scream!" He yelled as she flipped him off.
"Fuck you!" She yelled.
"Yeah, she is alright and furious," Atreus sighed as Mimir smiled a bit.
"Nothing is more dangerous than a woman's scorn," Mimir informed.
"I didn't even know she existed! It's not my fault Sindri hid her from us. I would have known I would have maybe asked her to come instead of Sindri," he informed.
"Lad, you are missing the point here; she was right your father would have helped you if you desired to walk this path. What little trust she was giving you is gone because you took her father, who could have died, instead of your father, that has killed God! I don't think Sindri even killed one," Mimir explained.
"Okay, just relax; no reason to lash out at Sindri; he was just doing something for that stupid kid since he was too busy not thinking about what would happen if he got killed," Hilda informed as she already beat them down the mountain side not even realizing she did it.
"Sindri is an adult; he can make his own choices, but if he died, Brok would never get over it; the same goes for Sindri. Now, where is that door?" She asked as she heard a squawk.
She quickly turned around and saw it was just an average-looking crow, but she didn't trust birds either because they could be the eyes of Odin. She looked at the crowd carefully, and it flew away, revealing the real culprit of that squawk that didn't sound right.
"Eat my ass, Odin!" She muttered as she quickly shot it with her bow making her smile.
She found the door and opened it, then hurried home as fast as she could. All her anger left her, but she never stayed angry long; anger never helped anyone and only caused problems. She wouldn't allow them unless Sindri gave her the go-ahead, which he would never do. So she could hang out with the squirrel, the deer in the tree, and the creatures that protected the tree's roots.
She got to the house and put her armor down next to Brok, and her weapons, then looked at them as if she had done the most disgraceful act in her life, making Brok stop hammering.
"Everything alright, kid?" Brok asked as she sighed.
"Sindri has been helping Atreus go behind his father's back to find a dead guy, or maybe he is alive, I don't know. It's just a bunch of ifs right now. I also almost punched that little punk kid," she informed as Brok laughed.
"That's you alright, and I don't know how you never lose your cool; if I didn't know better, I would say you were under some spell. So why do you look like you murdered someone's pet?" He asked.
"I want to try to sleep in the bed again," she said as Brok raised both eyebrows.
"Hilda, you have never slept in any bed; every time you did, you screamed because of a nightmare. You nearly stabbed Sindri last time, and with two people around that you don't know well, I don't think it's a good choice," Brok informed.
"If I don't get over this, then I don't know what to do. I have been trying once a month since I got here," she explained.
"Okay, I'll warn Sindri," he said as she nodded.
"Those two shouldn't be back for another couple of hours; there were so many monsters I think they will be clearing the area out, or Kratos is killing his son. That kid has some nerve not telling me that Sindri was helping him," she informed as she went upstairs to her room.
She paused as she looked at her bed; just one hour, that's it. It would break her record, and maybe she wouldn't throw up this time. She put her spare knife under the bed and took a deep breath. You have to work on this; you have to be stronger than your fear. Control your anxiety; you are safe. You are home; no one will hurt you here," she said as she lay down on her bed and closed her eyes.
"Do you think we can go find him tonight?" Atreus asked.
"We need rest and to come up with a plan," Kratos informed as they walked along the tree branches to Sindri's house.
They heard faint screams making Atreus take out his bow. He had never heard such horrible cries in his entire life and never wanted to listen to them again. He walked slowly backward, fearing they were fallowed, but nothing came after them. Finally, after a couple of blood-curdling screams, they stopped making him even more worried. What if something killed Sindri and Brok and then went after her?
"Father, did you hear that?" He asked.
"Aye lad, you don't think something fallowed Hilda threw the gate, do you?" Mimir asked as Kratos picked up his pace and opened the second door to get home.
Hilda was standing by the edge of a tree throwing up, and Sindri was next to her as well as Brok and a Squirrel. Atreus put his bow down and tried hard not to laugh at her for eating some lousy spider. Maybe she got attacked by a spider that she thought she had killed. It would be funny that she got so scared she screamed bloody murder.
"I guess that spider she killed is still alive; it must have smelled the spider she ate earlier," he chuckled as they got closer.
"How is this okay?!" Hilda asked as Sindri tried to touch her, but she pulled away.
"I know it's hard, but," Sindri paused.
"It's been five years, and I still can't get over this! I'm tired of this, and I'm sick of doing this every single time I sleep in bed! There is nothing different between the floor and a fucking bed," she hissed.
"Hold on, we got company," the squirrel said.
"Hilda?" Atreus asked as his smile faded, seeing her look as if she had seen a ghost.
Her face was deathly pale and covered in sweat. A spider didn't do this making him regret what he said to his father. She seemed to be calming down from whatever happened, but she was not telling them what had happened.
"I'm sorry I went ahead, but I was not about to stay with the kid that put my father in danger," she informed as she quickly headed back inside, making the Squirrel leave.
"Hilda waits a minute," he said as Sindri held his arm back.
"Give her a minute," he said as Hilda picked up the door to her room.
She knocked it off its hinges, and it almost fell on Sindri. She sighed and picked it up to see how much damage she had done. Atreus came in first while Kratos was talking to Sindri and Brok. She took the door over to the area where they worked on their weapons and started to take out the nails.
"Hilda, what happened?" He asked as she kept working.
He looked around and saw some of the balconies were also broken, and pieces were lying on the floor. He looked at her worried, but she kept working as if nothing had happened. So whatever happened often enough not to faze her for long. She started to sand the wood down, making sure to get rid of any nicks it got from falling.
"Did you turn into something?" He asked as she still ignored him.
"Hilda, this is important because if you did, maybe I could help you, or at least my father can help you control your emotions. I'm not the best at it, but what he taught me helps," he explained.
"I didn't turn into anything," she informed.
"Then what happened? I didn't think I made you this mad," he said.
"It wasn't you, and it happens because I force myself to do something that triggers it. I do it to control it and be stronger than my fear, but it never ends well. I even locked my door this time; it still happens, and it will never go away," she informed.
"Were you trying to see the future?" He asked.
"No, trying to sleep. Now stop bothering me," she informed as she looked over the door.
"Hilda! We can't go threw Týr's tower, so we need to make something that can use the doors from long ago. He won't suspect a thing if we do. No, we have been working on something, but it needs a little more work, probably a day's worth at most. Do you think you can help us?" Sindri asked as she smiled.
"Sure, it will take a whole day; if we start it now, we can maybe finish it threw the night. For sure, I can. I mean, I don't sleep, really," Hilda informed.
"Okay.... you two get some rest; we got work to do," she said as she put the heavy door down and started getting some parts out.
"So here are some of the plans I drew up. Do you think it will work?" Sindri asked as Hilda looked at it.
"Should? If not, we are fucked," Brok informed.
Atreus felt terrible for her, and he wanted to ask more about it, but he felt his father's presence near him. So he looked around and saw Kratos was near him and started to walk near him. Hilda would never flat-out talk to him unless he earned her trust, which he didn't.
"Tomorrow is the big day finding Týr, that's if he's alive and where we think he is," Mimir informed.
"Mimir, is Hilda going to be okay?" Atreus asked as she coughed.
"She will be; trusting people is hard for her, and you gave her a good reason not to trust you. So give her some time," Mimir explained.
"Alright, hopefully, I can do that," he said as he went to bed.
Questions still burned in his mind like what in the world scared her so severely that she plowed threw a heavy locked door and took out the balcony? Why did Mimir or his father say anything about it and pretend it never happened?
It was late in the night, and the two dwarfs, as well as Hilda, worked on the thing that was going to reopen the mystic gateway to get to all the realms without Odin knowing about it. Hopefully, that was the plan anyway; if it didn't work, maybe they could go threw the Týr's temple. But that was risky and a last resort.
Hilda sent the dwarves to bed hours ago, leaving her to work on the device alone. She wasn't going to assemble them herself to make sure if anything she made was wrong, they could fix it instead of guessing what part was wrong. She knew how to make it; they left instructions and how it should look, but she wasn't as good as Brok or Sindri. She put the hammer down as she finished the second to last piece, but she needed some sleep because she was part human.
She couched a bit, making her upset that she was getting sick. She had never been ill as far as she could remember, but maybe she was at one point but just ignored it like she did her anger. If it was pushed out of her mind, it didn't exist. She sat up against the wall close to the stairs since there were barely any walls in this place to speak of and closed her eyes then started to sleep. Atreus walked down the stairs as quietly as he could, not making a single sound when he heard the hammering stop. He couldn't sleep thinking about the horrible things Hilda must have seen to freak out like that.
It worried him, and he wanted to give her peace, at least. When he got downstairs, he saw Hilda sleeping against the wall. She was wearing a short sleeve shirt, an apron, thick pants, and boots. The markings on her arms now showed more. He never knotted the markings on her hands either, so they must have been new, or he wasn't paying attention. He wanted to carry her up and take her to bed, but if he touched her, he was most likely to get murdered if he did. So now he was left to his thoughts. He started walking around a bit to clear his mind, not realizing Hilda was wide awake and close behind him.
"Atreus," she said, making him jump a foot in the air and almost scream in terror.
"What the fucking hell is wrong with you?!" Atreus asked as Hilda crossed her arms.
"You are not going anywhere alone, and if you try to, I will kick your ass; if I can't beat you, then I'll scream," she informed as he sighed.
"I wasn't planning on leaving at this moment. I can't sleep," he explained.
"Sleep on the floor; it works for me every time," she said as she returned to work.
"But your nightmares," he stated.
"Don't happen when I do," she said as she started hitting metal with the hammer.
"So you only get nightmares when you sleep in a bed?" He asked.
"Yes, every time," she said as she kept hitting the metal piece.
"What are your dreams about? They might be visions," he said.
"They aren't visions; now I'm busy if you can't see that. I got this final piece to make, a door to fix, and some railings to fix. So unless you know how to do any of this, I suggest you do whatever you need to and go back to bed. But stay in my line of vision; if you don't, I will hunt you down and drag you back here. I'm not going to let you go behind your father's back again," she informed.
"I'm just trying to help you," he explained.
"I don't remember asking for it," she stated.
"Look, I know you don't trust me, and that's fine, but I'm a giant; you are a giant; we both don't know much about giants or our powers or what we can do. Plus, we are surrounded by adults all the time. So, could we try to get along and be friends?" He asked.
"I'm not sure if you know this, but it's tough for me to trust people," she informed.
"But if you ever want to talk about something, you can work with me if Sindri and Brok are not available," he said, making her sigh.
"Okay...here, give me your bow," she said as he gave it to her.
Hilda looked at it and got a different hammer and a stone. She said a spell, making the stone light up and then hit it hard, making it disappear. Hilda looked at it again as it glowed a bit, then she got out an empty box made from thick pieces of wood, and she took his bow and hit it against the chest, smashing it. Hilda looked over the bow again and plucked the string.
"Yep, there you go; it should withstand more damage if you have to hit someone with it. It is as strong as a rock," she said, handing him his bow back.
"Wow, thank you," he said as she nodded.
"It's what friends do, I guess," she said, making him smile.
Morning came quickly, and Sindri and the broker assembled the device to help them travel between realms. To say it hurt Mimir was an understatement, but now they had a way to travel to save Týr from the mine and hopefully get real answers for once.
