Minecraft Lore: Origin of Minecraft

There is much lore and many theories to the intricate sandbox game that is Minecraft. Theories of civilization, theories of apocalypses, theories of brave orders, and evil entities. If you want to properly understand the game, you must dive into its past.

Here we'll explore some of the amazing lore behind the greatest video game of all time. Using numerous sources and theories from all over the web, I piece together The Origin of Minecraftia.

About This Theory: This is one of several theories which we shall delve into over the course of 2022. This Theory is the most basic and vastly known though you will not find the complete account in any one place. It is an unspoken theory among fans, mostly passed around by word of mouth. It has been changed and morphed more times than most others, and carries the basic principles of the vast majority of theories.

There was a blank void of nothingness. It stretched as far as a mortal - no an immortal's eyes could see. Then there was Notch, suspended in the middle of the vast, white reality.

Notch was a deity, a mythical being capable of much more than anything a mere mortal could do. Much, much more. But even a god is lonely. And so Notch created another, to share the empty void with him and the eternal silence.

The entity was a player in Notch's great scheme. He carefully and lovingly created and detailed a blocky boy in his own form. To be like an equal, a friend of the deity. He called him Steve, and with a final tapping noise, the player came to life.

But the boy became restless, like any mortal. Even Notch could not bestow him the power of immortality. Not yet - he had greater things in mind.

Steve was restless, he was resentful, he begged his father to give him power, so he could create things too. More people, somewhere else to live, trophies and powers and magic. But he was young and reckless, and Notch refused.

Instead, he created an island for Steve to live on. He loved the player and vowed to watch over him and visit him down on his island. He created light and dark so that there was a time in the dark for Steve to sleep and think, to rest and recharge so he would be happy and wise in the light.

But Steve was lonely, alone on the green grass island suspended over the void. So Notch created another person, a girl called Alex with auburn and gold hair to be Steve's companion and friend. The two were happy, but after some time they became restless and bored again.

So Notch gave them a block of leaves. They took turns holding it, fascinated. So Notch gave them a young sapling, which they planted. It grew into a tall oak tree. The pair were ecstatic, and by Notch's goodwill hundreds of saplings soon dotted the small area of plains.

The players tended the saplings and watched in joy as each one grew to be a tall tree. But soon the saplings ran out, and Alex and Steve became sad and angry, and began to question Notch and whisper bitter things to one another.

When Notch realized they were unhappy, he gave them the ability to harvest the leaves of the tree to reap more saplings. Soon there was a leafy forest as far as the eye could see.

But when Notch saw all of the long, barren stumps dotting the plains, he made it so that the players could pick up the blocks of stone, wood, dirt, and gravel that made up the world and use them to build beautiful structures.

And so Alex and Steve gathered up the wood stumps and used them to create towers and buildings which dotted their grove soon after. Notch loved seeing their buildings and watching their skills improve to the point where he came down from the void and congratulated each of them on their merits.

He soon took to evening strolls down on the island where he could admire their latest works. When Notch realized just how they loved building he created an inventory for each of them, so they could store blocks and trophies of their accomplishments and mining trips.

In addition, he also provided them with a huge tree, which sprouted in the middle of the garden. Its roots spread far and wide, and when they had reached their limits in the depths of the island they created bedrock at the island's core.

Notch then allowed the bedrock at the depths of the earth to spread into a long, flat plain deep in the void. The bedrock was then covered with a crust of sand, and water filled the endless crater, creating an ocean to surround the island that was surrounded by void mere seconds ago.

He then did the unthinkable, amazing miracle that the players had longed for through all the years on their island. He granted them the ability to create blocks from thin air, to craft amazing technological advancements with a special, magical table using the new minerals and stones which he spread fruitfully through the earth.

Granit, deepslate, andesite, diorite, copper, redstone, iron, tuff, emeralds, diamonds, and gold all filled the earth and replaced the stone and gravel of old.

But he also made a mistake. Notch was blinded by his love and adoration of his son and daughter too much to see the inevitable consequences of giving them the ability to create, or spawn, living, breathing entities to walk the island among the content players.

Alex created the fox to be her companion. He was able to pick up items and collect things from storage systems to bring to Alex to and fro her structures and building sites. He was an architect's companion, and Alex loved him and called him 'fox'.

Notch happily obliged and allowed Alex to create new plants, and so she became the mother of new growth. She grew sweet berries and melons to share with her fox, and she planted and created a system of agriculture including her favorite plant, beetroot, along with wheat, carrots, potatoes, cocoa, and pumpkins.

She then created the ability to eat her creations, and though they were never hungry or thirsty they had delicious, natural treats in plenty.

Steve created the wolf, which he fed slices of pumpkins and tastes of leftover bread crumbs. He and his wolf became good friends, and soon he created more wolves, which became packs who followed him wherever he went. He called his own wolf 'dog' and so from then on somewhere in the far future any tamed wolves were called dogs.

Alex was then content, but Steve had Notch's excitement and impulse ten-fold. Sheep, chickens, and goats for his wolves to hunt. Pigs and cows to slaughter and roast over his genius invention, the fire, on occasions. Bats to entertain him in dark corners under the ground, a colorful array of fish to fill the empty ocean.

But he didn't stop there. Tens of passive creatures followed for his entertainment. Hunting became a desirable sport for him on weekends. Fishing was an easy pastime. While Alex constructed beautiful towers Steve went deep into the forest for days at a time to invent and create for his benefit.

Notch watched Alex from his throne in the clouds which now dotted the void. The sky, as he liked to call his new palace which Alex had made up for him. He watched Alex fondly as she stripped the last log on her wooden castle.

He decided to give his players a gift for their productivity. First, he went to Alex. He gave her obsidian and flint and helped her light a portal to a beautiful dimension called the Nether. It was an empty realm filled with floating islands covered in blue and crimson trees, red and green grasses, and smooth gorgeous basalts.

Underneath all the islands stretched a beautiful ocean of crystal clear water. The sky was a never-ending hazy blue, which was the color of pearly-white lapis. Instead of clouds, patches of glowstone dotted the sky.

Alex called them stars, and she was so fantasized that Notch raised his hand and allowed beautiful pinpoints of white light to fill the overworld night sky as well. They were just another gift to his adored daughter.

Notch then proceeded to look for his son, Steve. He looked all around the island but did not find him. Finally, Notch stumbled across a single stone button hidden in the mountainside. As soon as he pressed it the mountain opened up to reveal a horrible sight.

Thousands of entities and mutant mobs, evil creatures of the darkness lay behind iron bars, caged up all along the wall. At the door sat a pack of ravenous wolves, waiting to kill any who dared trespass. Notch was horrified but proceeded on down the dark, winding tunnel Steve had fashioned.

Suddenly, it opened up into a deep cavern filled with one of Steve's mutant inventions - lava. In the center of the pit sat Steve, his eyes glazed over with a white film. They seemed to glow. In an instant Notch realized how Steve had mutilated and evolved himself into a creature, a monster.

In a rage, Notch proceeded to attempt to kill the mutant player. He threw a lightning strike at the monster, but it deflected off Steve easily. The player had morphed into a god. The new immortal let out a terrible laugh and his lips curled into a smile.

"Steve! Look what you have done!" Notch cried, "Stop this nonsense!"

"Steve...? Who's that? Just another creature you've created for your own entertainment. Think it's funny, all these years watching us from the clouds, never loving, never noticing your so-called heroes... no, call me Herobrine, for I am the bane and brine of all heroes! Now meet your end, for I am the new god of Minecraftia!" Steve cried and launched himself at Notch.

The two summoned weapons of all kinds, and it is said that the explosions that followed were so strong they blasted away the bedrock under the world and fell into the Nether. The new, beautiful dimension at the center of the earth was then transformed from all the battle.

All that was left was charred growth, netherrack, and craters of lava. The stars were shattered and a heavy red misy settles over the nether from all the explosions and blasts that ensued. Some of Herobrine's vile creations' cages were broken and his creatures were unleashed into the nether.

Ghasts, mutilated pigs called zombie pigmen, magma cubes, and all manners of vile things. It was said that when Notch finally captured Herobrine he shed a single tear over his son before banishing Herobrine to the end of the world, a prison in a dark void of nothing where Herobrine would be forever trapped.

Notch then manufactured a dragon to guard Herobrine, so that you could only reach his far prisons in the sky after the dragon had been slain - a near-impossible task. To make it even harder, Notch placed numerous obsidian towers and end crystals to recharge the dragon's strength, making the dragon near immortal.

It was said the dragon was called the Endor Dragon, for he was the guardian of the End of the world... and the horrible danger which lay behind it. Notch finally created a single portal to the End, which would have to be filled with twelve Eyes of Endor before it could be activated. He buried the portal deep under the ground in a near impenetrable stronghold, which would be lost to the walls of time.

Finally at Alex's request Notch resealed the Nether from the Overworld with a roof of bedrock, so that the monsters and horrors which had been released within would be forever held back. Alex's portal was extinguished, and Notch and she agreed it was never to be lit again... or so they thought.

Notch made Alex vow to never use her powers again before giving her a single kiss to her forehead and disappearing into the sky, alas, he too was lost to the walls of time.

It is unsure what happened next, but it is most likely that after the deadly battle destroyed the mountain, aside from releasing all of Steve's other horrors on the world such as zombies and skeletons, the very core of the universe was shaken, and the boundary lines which it was written on.

And Steve's last creation, aside from his new self, managed to survive. Another player, another boy, was probably destined to be his friend or another companion before Steve went insane and destroyed himself.

It is said Alex found him wandering the island one fateful night, and rescued him from a band of skeletons. After bringing him to her base, she called him Bob.

After this, history remains grey and empty as the void. All that is known is that from Alex and Bob or Steve's lineage, came the entire Minecraftia. Thousands of unique players.

An ancient race of builders. Talented. Brave. Clever beyond words. These ancient peoples spread out over the entire world and created a vast civilization. At their head was an Order. The Order of Minecraftia.

They were architects with sound skill, they were redstonists advancing into the great age of innovation. They were experimenters and crafters, who used explosives, metals, precious recourses, and gunpowder to create vast mineshafts and advanced railways and transportation systems under the ground.

They were leaders. Heroes.

But with every hero, there was another who thrashed against his prison in the endless, void. Getting closer every day to freedom. The heroes' brine.
