The Talk

Luke stretched as he climbed out of bed. The past few weeks had been rough for him at work and he was getting sore. Suddenly, he jumped up. Today was Madison's eighteenth birthday. He tiptoed into the kitchen, trying not to wake Elizabeth and Noah. He peeked out the window and smiled. The sun wasn't up yet which meant he had plenty of time to cook breakfast unless Grace woke Madison up. He opened the cabinet and took out a pot and a plate. Then, he walked over to the pantry and grabbed his ingredients.

-1 Hour Later-
Luke smiled as he walked out the door. In one hand he held a plate full of bacon and eggs. In the other hand, he held a basket of fresh baked bread. He walked quickly over to Madison's house and opened the door. He walked slowly into Madison's room and whispered in her ear,

"Happy birthday, Madi."

She shot up and squealed, "Oh Luke!" He handed her the plate and smiled. She thanked him and they bowed their heads in prayer. After a short and sweet prayer, they began to eat. Madison ate her eggs first, then her bacon, and last but not least, the bread which she shared with Luke. They talked for a while about different subjects, some serious and some funny. Once they finished all the food, Madison smiled and kissed him on the cheek. "Thanks again Luke." She said as she stood up and walked towards the door, "I'm going to check on Gracie if that's okay." Luke nodded while he ate the last piece of bread.

Madison walked down the hallway to the last door directly in front of her. She slowly opened the door and walked into the plain room. In the middle of the room there was a crib and inside the crib laid baby Grace. She was shivering, so Madison pulled her white blanket over the little girls body. Grace turned positions, stuck her thumb in her mouth, and went back to sleep. Her little black curls fell over her eyebrows and Madison slowly walked away. Once she shut the door, she walked faster towards her room. She gasped as she saw a beautiful, new, blue dress on her bed.

"Luke! What is this for?"

"I wanted to take you out on a birthday picnic in the woods, but I want you to look very nice." He smiled, pointing to the dress.

"I love it! Thank you so much. But what about Grace?" She said in a more serious tone.

"Don't worry about her. Noah and Elizabeth offered to babysit her."

Madison smiled as she shoved Luke out of the room. She walked to the mirror and held the dress up to her body. It was a bright teal blue color and it flowed all the way to her knees. She giggled as she took off her pajamas and slipped on the dress. She decided to add some makeup and perfume because she was eighteen after all! She looked at herself one more time in the mirror and walked out the door and into the kitchen. Luke was standing there with the basket of lunch in his hand.

"Wow Madison. You look..wow. Just amazing." He gasped.

"And you look handsome yourself." Madison said, blushing. There was no doubt that she still blushed when Luke was around. Even though they had known each other for a while, she still thought he was the cutest guy in the world. His slicked back, short brown hair was more handsome than anything. Madison finally had the chance to cut it and she loved the look.

"May I?" He said, stretching his hand out.

"Of course! But when are Noah and Elizabeth coming? I don't want to leave Grace alone."

"No worries. They're outside waiting right now." The two walked out the door and smiled as they saw Noah and Elizabeth standing at the bottom of the steps.

"Well, well, well, what do we have here?" Noah said as he patted Luke's shoulder, "Take care and behave yourselves." Luke nodded and looked over at Elizabeth who was hugging Madison and reassuring her she'd keep good watch over Grace. The couple waved goodbye as Luke and Madison disappeared into the forest. A half hour later, they arrived at their destination. Luke helped Madison put down the picnic blanket and they sat down under the trees.

"Thanks again for this Luke." Madison said after they had said grace.

"No problem. Besides, you need a break from being a mom every once and a while."

"That's something I wanted to talk about, Luke." She said, shifting positions.

"What's that?"

"Children. I mean, once and if we get married, I would like more kids. I've been asking God if that was His will or not but I'm not sure. It seems like He's saying yes, but I wanted to know what you thought."

"Well, I would love more children as well but I guess we should pray about it."

"Yeah. But that is if we get married."

"And that won't be long." Luke said standing up, getting a box out of his pocket and getting on one knee, "Madison Lambert, will you marry me?"
