The Move

The African heat swarmed around Madison. She loved being outside, but it was quite hot on this summer day. She sat in a chair on the shore of the river watching Grace splash in the water with Luke. She smiled and looked down at her bump. She could not wait for her baby to be born so she could hold it. Time seemed to pass by fast but sometimes it seemed to freeze.

"Momma look!" Grace's face lit up as she dipped her face in the water. Her face swooped up and her hair whipped water.

"Good job baby!" Madison clapped her hands and grinned.

"Daddy, watch." The little girl said as she poked her daddy. Her head dipped in the water as soon as Luke looked around. He started clapping his hands and then, everything went silent.

"Luke?" Madison stood up and screamed, "Luke, where's Grace?"

His eyes widened and he frantically searched for his daughter. She was no where to be found. Madison started crying and screaming as she looked for her daughter. Suddenly, Luke pulled up her little body. She was fragile and her head was heavy. Her curls fell over his arms as he ran out of the water and into Noah and Elizabeth's house. The couple rushed to immediate help, getting blankets and checking her pulse. Finally, Noah announced,

"She's alive, but very weak." He smiled and wrapped the little girl in blankets. Madison held her baby girl and cried over her. All the stress was getting to her and she wasn't sure whether she was ready to be a mom again.

-Several Hours Later-
Madison rocked the chair in the living room as she cuddled Grace on her lap. She was trying to spare every moment she could holding her little girl because even now with her huge bump, it was almost impossible. Luke walked by and smiled at his wife. He sat on the couch next to her chair and pushed his hair up and out of his face.

"Are you excited for the new baby?" He said, placing his hand on top of his wife's.

"Yes, I can barely wait." The couple smiled at each other and laughed. Little snores filled the room and Madison looked at Grace. She was sound asleep and was already dreaming. Luke picked up the little girl and walked her slowly to her bedroom. Madison followed and smiled as she saw her husband kiss Gracie on the forehead. Once he closed the door to Grace's bedroom, he held Madison's hand and walked her to their bedroom. Caspian barked and followed them. She sat on the bed and Luke joined her.

"How are you feeling?" He said, squeezing her hand.

"Pretty good." She smiled back I him, "I sure can't wait to be parents aga.." She moaned as she placed her hand on her stomach.

"You okay Madi?" Luke said as he jumped up, "Is it the cramps?"

"Yeah, but Luke, it's much worse this time." She said as she gritted her teeth, "Hurry, go get Elizabeth!"

-Lambert Family-
Jane sniffed as she looked at the man in the casket. Her husband. How could he be dead? The funeral was over with and men were placing David in the ground. The man she was married to for 25 years was now gone. She sniffed again as her son, Isaac wrapped his arms around her.

"It's okay, Mom." He reassured her, "Dad is in a better place now."

She smiled and wiped her tears, "You are right son. But I feel like I've lost almost everything. A daughter and now a husband."

"That's not true." Isaac said sternly. "Knowing Madison, I highly doubt she's dead. She's a strong girl mom."

Jane smiled at her son and looked back at the grave. "Isaac, we have to move."

"Move? Why move?"

"For more job opportunities and better education. You need a job and so do I. Your sisters need better education. We're moving tomorrow morning. Your sisters are finished packing so it's your turn."

Isaac sighed and he walked towards the house. He silently prayed that his family would have the strength to move on and not look back. As he entered the house, he saw Katelyn on the couch with her friend Jada. They were talking about how they were going to share a bedroom and bathroom.

"What are you talking about?" Isaac interrupted, "Are the Whitfield's coming with us?"

Jada nodded her head eagerly, "Yes! We're joining you on a trip tomorrow. My parents own a car so we can get to the village faster."

Isaac smiled and walked to his room. At least the families had each other and a car. He could already see how God was providing for them.

-In the Car-
"It's okay." Elizabeth coached Madison. "Deep breaths."

The car rumbled as six people packed inside. Noah was driving, Luke was in the front seat beside Noah holding Grace, and Elizabeth and Anna were in the back with Madison. They were on their way to the closest hospital which was many miles away. Elizabeth said that Madison had signs of labor and they needed to get to the hospital quick. After all, she was only seven months pregnant and not ready to give birth.

Madison squeezed Elizabeth's hand as she let out a little scream, "The pain..the pain." She said as she breathed fast.

"It's okay." Anna said calmly, "We're almost there. Almost there.."

The sound of the vehicle rumbled over Anna's voice and Madison started to push.

"We have to get there fast, Noah. She's starting to push and we can't have this baby come early." Elizabeth yelled to the front seat.

Twenty minutes later, they arrived at the hospital. Luke quickly got out and picked up his wife who had sweat dripping down her forehead.

"Luke..please..please pray." She said as she squinted her eyes.

Anna picked up Grace and followed Elizabeth, Noah, Luke and Madison into the hospital. They quickly placed Madison on a bed as the doctor checked on her. A few minutes later, he returned with the news.

"The baby is going to have to be born here in a few hours if something doesn't happen. If it is born this early, there's barely any chance of survival. We don't have much medicine or tools here, so it will take a miracle to save both Madison and the baby's lives."

Luke fell on his knees and prayed, "Lord, please keep both the baby and Madison safe..I don't know what I would do without them."
