Grace
"Mommy! Wake up." The little African girl bounced on the bed as Madison woke up. Caspian jumped up on the bed as well and gave kisses to both girls.
"Hey baby girl. How are you?"
It had been a year since Luke and Madison accepted the challenge of being parents to a little one year old girl. They named her Grace Olivia after Madison's favorite song, Amazing Grace and Luke's mom, Olivia. Now, Grace was two and the most energetic little girl ever.
"I am good momma. Where is daddy?"
"He's at work sweetheart." Madison stood up and picked the little girl up. "Let's go get some breakfast started." Madison walked out of the bedroom and across the living room and into the kitchen. Their small cabin was right next to Elizabeth and Noah's. Madison and Luke spent months building it together and finished it a few months before Grace turned two.
Madison sat the little girl in her high chair and walked over to a basket and picked out two slices of fresh baked bread that Elizabeth had made. Ever since she was shot, the old lady had to use a cane, yet she was getting along with it very well.
"Da da do da!" Grace slammed her spoon up and down as she sang the beautiful melody, "Ba bo be ba! Mommy, do you like my song?"
Madison spun around smiled as her daughters eyes twinkled in the sunlight. "Yes honey, it is beautiful."
Ten minutes later, Grace and Madison had a fully cooked meal.
"Let's say grace."
"That's me!" The little girl shouted smiling from ear to ear.
Madison giggled, "Yes it is. Let's pray."
"May I pray mommy?" Grace tilted her head to the side and placed an innocent, serious look on her face.
"Sure." Madison patted the girls hand and bowed.
"Dear Jesus, thank you for mommy and daddy. Thank you for this bread and eggs. In Jesus' name, amen!" The little girl held her hands to the sky and looked at Madison, giggling.
"Amen!" Madison smiled and reached for the Bible. "Today we're going to read Psalms 127: 3-5. It says, 'Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate." Madison closed her Bible and thought for a moment. That verse seemed to speak to her seriously about something Luke and her were deciding.
- A few miles away -
"Luke, you have done good work today. Proud of you son."
Luke brushed his hair out of his face and smiled, "Thank you sir."
"Oh and have Madison give you a haircut soon." The two man laughed.
"Yes sir." Luke replied.
For the past year, Luke had been working for a man named Thomas. He had been a great boss and Luke was treated fairly. Luke was training to be a carpenter. He worked long hours a day, but he needed the money to support his family. Luke had built a hut with his wood working skills, but only Grace and Madison lived in it. Luke lived in the house next door with Noah and Elizabeth. He didn't want to have any temptations because Madison and him were committed to staying pure until marriage.
"How is Grace?" Thomas interrupted Luke's thoughts.
"She is doing quite well actually. She is a great talker! Thank you for asking."
"That is good to hear. And have you and Madison made your decision yet?"
"No." Luke said sighing. "It is a big commitment and we aren't sure if we're ready."
"I will be praying." Thomas patted Luke's back and walked away.
Luke sighed and wondered if he was making the right decision.
