An Unusual Guest
I walk through the woods as a white wolf.
It's not uncommon to see a wolf in the Woods of Narnia. Therefore, it's a perfect cover.
When I reach my destination, I phase back into my elf form with ease and smile. It's the house of a very old friend of mine.
I think you know of him. A faun with curly brown hair, usually wears a red scarf, and answers to the name of Tummus?
Yep, that's the one.
Tummus and I have been friends for a very long time. It's dangerous to be friends with an outlaw and I'm basically an outlaw, so I don't visit often. But, I always manage to visit for a day or two.
I pull the hood of my cloak down and my hair out from hiding in my cloak, letting it fall around me.
I'm wearing a white tunic with a brown leather belt just above my hips, black tights, brown leather boots that go to my knees, and a snow white cloak that goes to my ankles. My quiver of arrows strapped across my body and my bow on top of my quiver.
When I'm in any animal form, all of my clothing and weapons disappear and reappear the moment I turn back into an elf.
I walk inside Tummus' house and I find it dark. Which is strange, because Tummus's house is usually filled with light and all the comforts of home.
"Tummus?" I call out, wondering if he's home or not.
"Arya?" squeaks Tummus' voice from the steps that go to the rooms.
I look to see Tummus sitting on the lower steps,... crying.
I take off my weapons, set them on the floor, and go over to him. I sit by him and put my arms across his shoulders.
"Hey, what's wrong?" I ask.
He doesn't say anything, only cries harder. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I see the most unusual guest ever to be in Tummus' house.
A little girl. A girl with a small black bow in her shoulder length dark brown hair, pale pink lips, and pale peach skin, wearing a dark and light brown plaited dress that goes just above her knees, pale yellow leggings, black buckle shoes, and a little green coat with some other colors on the collar.
She must have fallen asleep, because her cup of tea is shattered on the floor. Then, her eyes flutter open. She looks out the window and sees that it's getting late.
"I have to go." she whispers, getting up off the chair.
"It's too late for that." Tummus says, gloomily. "I'm such a terrible faun."
The girl comes over to us, pulls out a white handkerchief, and gives it to Tummus. Her act of kindness makes my heart warm like a fire. I like this girl already.
"Oh, no." she says. "You're the kindest faun I've ever met."
"She's right, Tummus." I say to my friend. "You are."
"No, I've done a terrible thing." Tummus objects to our comments.
"Mr. Tummus, you couldn't have done anything wrong." the girl restates.
"It's not something I've done, Ms. Pevensie." Tummus says to the girl who's last name is Pevensie. "It's something I'm doing."
The girl and I are confused now.
"What are you doing?" she asks for the both of us.
"I'm kidnapping you!" Tummus exclaims, terrified and ashamed of the sentence.
The girl gasps and backs away from Tummus, whereas I just hold Tummus tighter.
"It's the White Witch." Tummus says to the girl, who doesn't understand. "She's the one who keeps Narnia in winter. She keeps it always cold. She gave orders that if any of us found a human child, w- w- w- we were supposed to give them to her."
She's... HUMAN?!
"But, Mr. Tummus, you wouldn't." the girl says, which makes Tummus look away. "I thought you were my friend."
At this, Tummus looks back at her.
"That I am." he agrees, standing up. "And you are going to return home, even if I am to be killed."
I immediately get an idea.
"Tummus," I start. "The White Witch gave the law, correct?"
"Yes."
"Well, I'm an outlaw." I concludenn. "I have nothing to do with the law. I can take her and not be in trouble."
Tummus sees the logic in my idea and nods. Then, he turns to the girl, kneels in front of her, and takes her hands in his.
"Now, Ms. Pevensie, this is a very dear friend of mine, her name is Arya, and she is going to take you to the lamppost. Alright? Can you find your way from there?"
"I think so." Ms. Pevensie says.
Tummus sighs and tries to give the white handkerchief back to her. She just gives it back to him.
"Keep it." she says, kindly. "You need it more than I do."
Tummus smiles and chuckles slightly. "Whatever happens, Ms. Lucy Pevensie, I am very glad to have meet you. You've made me warmer than I've been in a hundred years." he says, truth ringing in his words, before lightly tapping the tip of her nose with his pointer finger. "Now, go with Arya. Go!"
Lucy and I go outside. If we're going to make it, we're going to have to be fast, which means I'm going to have to carry her.
I quickly phase into a white horse. Lucy stops and stares at me in amazement.
"Lucy, come on!" I say, and yes, I can talk in animal form. "Get on my back!"
She snaps out of her daze and gets on my back.
"Now, she may already know you're here." I say as I run through the trees. "The woods are full of her spies. Even some of the trees are on her side."
We make it to the lamppost, Lucy slips off my back, and I phase back into my normal self.
"Thank you, Ms. Arya." she says, graciously.
"You are welcome, Lucy." I say. "But, for further notice, please call me Arya."
"Will we ever see each other again?" she asks, hopefully.
"Only time will tell." I reply.
She nods and then hugs me. After a few moments of being shocked, I hug her back. I have been hugged, but not for a while.
We pull apart, she turns, and disappears into the trees. I wait for a moment, then turned, phased back into a wolf, and went back to Tummus' house.
We had just saved a daughter of Eve. A very unusual guest, indeed.
