Chapter 5
Dad, Meet Dad
————————————————
Toothless' POV:
Oh my skies, he's alive! The hatchling is a boy too! I thought for sure when me, Hiccup, Astrid, and Stormfly saw the scattered eggshells in our nesting cave, we had thought the hatchling had died, most likely from predators. I had mourned, giving up hope at the sight... but Stormfly had followed the scent all the way to this cave that was below and here we are now. I don't blame Luna, she tried her best like always and she saved three of the four eggs. The other three have already hatched. Two girls and one boy and we had named them Dusk, Dawn, and Thunder.
"R-really? That's great! Do you know where he is?!" I asked enthusiastically while prancing around a bit as Hiccup almosted danced in joy in the background before translating to Astrid, who also was about to dance in joy with Hiccup. All he gave me was a snort like I've offended him somehow before he place his wings back on his back, revealing the small, sleeping hatchling.
My eyes widened in joy as I looked at the Hatchling while he slept peacefully. He looked comfortable, content even. His eyes fluttered in sleep and I saw they were the same color as mine. He was mostly Luna's color which is to be expected as we have two hatchlings that look mostly like me and only one that looks like her. His spine fins were black as well, as were the end of his ear flaps. His tail had the same shape as mine with black on the end of it.
I crooned under my breath as I look at how peaceful he looks.
"What's his name?" I ask the dragon with gratitude in my voice, assuming that he had been taking care of my Hatchling for me.
"Nick." The dragon said.
I tilted my head, "Why Nick?"
"He left knicks while I was helping him, so I dubbed him Nick."
I started laughing draconically. After all I was named by Hiccup for almost the exact same situation. 'Toothless? I could have sworn you had... teeth.'
I felt that I needed to learn the name of the one who took care of my son. After all, I owe him a great debt.
"What's your name dragon?" I ask him.
He seemed to hesitate at first, like he wasn't going to tell me. "...Soulver."
"Thank you, Soulver. Thank you for saving my son." I tell him gratefully.
He didn't say anything, but there was a hint of hidden anger behind his stare at me. The reason being one that I already know.
I sighed before deciding to rip the bandage off.
"You want to know why Nick was left behind, don't you?" I ask Soulver.
He started to lowly growl at me, "Yes."
"It wasn't by choice. Another dragon had come into our nest with its mate in an attempt to take it over. We tried to drive it off as best as we could, but they were starting to overtake us. We grabbed as many eggs as we could, but we realized after the other three had hatched, we had left one behind. We flew as fast as we could to my humans village. His mate has a nadder to track the egg's scent. And the rest is history."
After I was done I looked the dragon in the eyes seriously.
"If I could go back and change everything, I would."
All he did was harden his glare before snorting as he continued to growl, "It took you six days to finally find him. six days! How can someone like you be so irresponsible for your own hatchling!"
"I had three other hatchlings to take care of for a day as well. I had to fly to and from the village where my human lived so I could get some help looking for him. Then it took us two days just to reach the cave. Then another to track his scent! I was everything besides irresponsible. I tried everything! Had you just left him, I would have been able to find him in just 3 days!"
For a split second, I thought I imagined it, but I could've sworn I saw pain flashed in his eyes before it went away.
I curled up on the floor before I heard something, a voice. A voice that wasn't mine or Hiccup's or Astrid's or Stormfly's or Soulver's. I looked over at Nick to see his green eyes open and looking around in confusion.
Nick's POV:
I awoke to the sound of voices. Not just mine or Soulver's but a new one as well. I slowly opened my eyes to see the Night Fury from before looking at me with eyes full of joy.
I was confused and hid behind Soulver's front paw. I was shy and scared. Who was this dragon? Why did he show up?
"Who-who are you," I ask the black dragon.
"I am Toothless, young Nick. I am what is known as a night fury."
"Why are you here then?"
"I am here for you young one." He responded.
"Why?" I asked.
"Because, I am your father little one." He explained
I froze. My- my father? My real father? I started to tremble in anger and rage. This dragon left me. He left me for dead in a cave all by myself. I was alone for my birth. I had no one!
"You... you left me alone, afraid, lonely in a cave by myself. YOU LEFT ME SAD AND SCARED AND ALONE FOR THE DAY I WAS BORN!" I screeched at the dragon.
Toothless remained still, a tear rolling down his face as I continued to rage at him.
"For a day, A DAY! I had to struggle without anyone to help feed me, or comfort me, or help me. The next day, my instincts were screaming at me to give up and just die. I was thirsty, hungry, scared. I got sick after Soulver fed me and took care of me. I was convinced you had just up and left me. I was alone dad. And where were you?!" I demanded.
Toothless was crying now.
"I had no choice... your brother and sisters needed me too... I tried my best Nick."
"I NEEDED YOU TOO!," I screeched at him, enraged that he thinks he can come in mine and Soulver's cave and act like all's right in the world, "BUT NOOO, you had to take care of the eggs you had REMEMBERED. You didn't care about me at all. All you cared about was making sure your other three kids were safe and sound." I screamed at him.
Toothless had two steady trails of tears running down his eyes and he let out whines of pain and sorrow. He thinks he gets the right to act weak after all I've had to deal with?!?!
"I wonder what your thoughts were. 'Oh no, it seems we forgot an egg! Oh well, let's spend six days looking for him because we forgot to check the eggs before leaving!!!!!'" I screeched before hitting my biological father with my tail.
Before I could yell or rage any further, I was encased in a familiar scaly cocoon.
Soulver looked at Toothless before saying, "Give me some time to explain it to him while you wait outside with the others."
Toothless nodded before leaving the cave with Hiccup patting him on the back. He glanced back looking at me with a look of empathy on his face.
"Nick, trust me. You'll want to forgive him in the end. I know exactly how you feel, because my mother did almost the exact same thing to me." Hiccup said, with an understanding tone.
I snort in response before saying venomously,
"I will never forgive him."
Hiccups gives me look of sadness,
"If that's how you want it, I won't stop you. You should know, Toothless tried everything in his power to help you and your siblings and his mate. He tried his best Nick."
After saying that, Hiccup walked out of the cave to comfort Toothless who had his head buried in his paws as he whined and cried. I overheard parts of the conversation between the two of them.
"-did all that you could-," Hiccup said.
"all my fault- I should've tried harder." Toothless replied.
"-you did your best-" said Hiccup.
"-Hates me-" Toothless cried out.
"Give-space-" Hiccup advised.
Then Toothless said something that I heard fully and completely agreed with,
"I don't deserve him as a hatchling."
I growled in agreement and felt Soulver turn me around to face him, I glared at Soulver in anger and rage. He looked at me straight in the eyes with concern in his eyes. I started to get mad at him. He acts as though my rage was unjustified and undeserved.
"Why did you stop me?!?" I ask in frustration.
"Because little one, as much as I understand your rage, he's still your father." He responded with a serious face.
I snort in anger before processing his words and after a bit of time, my face softens from rage and anger, to sadness and confusion. I cried into his shoulder as I let all my grief, sorrow, and anger out.
"He left. Why did he leave? Why? I know he had other eggs, but why did he forget me? I don't understand!" I asked in desperation.
"He left cause another pair of mates forced him and your mother out. He was sure he grabbed all of you with his mate, but he didn't noticed you were missing until they were far away."
My anger stopped as I heard what Soulver said.
"So he didn't leave me on purpose?" I ask Soulver.
"No, it seems not."
I started crying again. I had raged at my own father for something he couldn't control. I had gotten angry at him when all he wanted to do was apologize.
"I need to fix this," I told Soulver.
I got up and went outside the cave entrance to see my biological father still crying with Hiccup comforting him while Astrid is just looking at Hiccup and back to Toothless and back to Hiccup and back to Toothless.
"Will someone tell me what in Thor's name is going on?!?!?!?"
I walked over to my dad before chirping to get his attention. Toothless looks over to see me. His face softens as he stops crying.
"I am so sorry Nick. I should have come as soon as I had left. I know you probably won't forgive me but-"
He was unable to finish that thought as I ran up to him and hugged him with my small body. Toothless sat on his hind legs and picked me up with his fore paws, cradling me like a baby before nuzzling me gently.
"Oh my son, my little hatchling," He said to me.
I crooned and nuzzled him back. I smiled and cried tears of joy before yawning. Toothless chuckled in response. He curled his fore and his hind paws around me before curling his wings around me as well. I felt warm, safe. It felt almost identical to the embrace of Soulver. I purred as I felt Toothless warm his scales to make me feel comfortable.
He licked my head causing me to giggle. The last thing I hear before falling asleep is toothless saying, "sleep well my little Hatchling."
I smile in contentment. Before fading away into the peaceful contentment of sleep.
