Chapter 4

Toothless Meets Soulver

————————————————

Nick's POV:

I woke up gasping for breath, for I had the exact same bad dream as before. I whimpered in fear, scared that I would have to face this terrible dream every night from now on whenever I go to sleep. I looked up to see the peaceful face of my father, Soulver, before deciding to try to go back to sleep.

——————

The dream was more vivid this time, for I was restrained by the claws of the same dragon as the one before. I watched as it looked down at me before letting out an evil and deep chuckle that shook my body.

"This one could be useful to me, it just needs to know who it's Alpha is."

I then felt one of the claws of the dragon start to press down on my body, crushing the air out of me. I gave out a loud whine to try to call Soulver. To my relief, he started to fly towards me. I wasn't worried, until the monster started to laugh.

"What's this? A worthless nobody who thinks they can defeat me?!"

"Let my hatchling go you hideous disgrace of an Alpha!"

The dragon batted Soulver with its huge paw. I heard a screech of pain before the beast hits Soulver again. This time, I heard nothing for Soulver started to fall from the sky.

The monster soon lets me go and I ran as fast as I could to my Father. When I got there, I was too late. He was already gone, but I didn't want to believe it so I nudged his head with my own. I tried to nuzzle him. I tried everything, but his eyes remained glassy and dull with a soulless expression in it. I started to weep, then the weeps turned to howls as I let out all the pain and misery I was feeling. Then I felt the beast pick me up with its claws and gripped me tightly in its paw before holding me up to its face. I struggled to breathe and squirmed in its grip.

The dragon growled in disappointment, "So, you are just a weak, helpless, useless hatchling after all..." he said before he started to crush me within his grasp. I tried gasping for air, but I couldn't find any. I tried breathing fire, but couldn't inhale enough air to generate the gas. My whole world soon started to go black and my heartbeat pounded in my ears as I ran out of air. The last thing I heard was the evil chuckle of the dragon and the sight of Soulver being thrown away before everything went dark.

——————

I woke up screeching as loud as my tiny lungs could. I was in a cold sweat and my eyes had widened in fear. It was so much worse than the first dream. And the worst part was, I could remember each and every detail of it. The dream had stayed with me. I was shivering in fear and started to cry. Why! Why me! I was only a hatchling, so why do I have to endure this? I didn't deserve this. This wasn't fair! Who was this dragon that keeps plaguing my dreams? Why does it have to be me?!?

I sobbed loudly in fear and sadness at the misfortune that plagued my sleep before looking up to see the concerned eyes of my father, Soulver.

Soulver's POV:

The first thing I hear after stirring to consciousness was the sound of young Nick's screech. The young one looked around with his eyes in a fearful gaze, pupils in slits and gasping for air. He was crying, sobbing in fact, almost as if he had experienced the most horrendous thing any living being has ever witnessed. The little one looked up to see my concerned gaze, and quickly started to cry against my scales while trying to hug me with his small, fragile form. He sobbed, letting out all the fear and anguish he had just experienced. I immediately hugged him, ignoring the soreness in my wings and body. Seeing him like this pained me for reasons unknown to my heart, but all the more to comfort him.

Nick kept sobbing and crying, all the while as I held him closely. He held on to me, as if he were afraid that if he would let go, I would somehow vanish or leave him in an instant. After a while, he eventually calmed down as his sobs turned into sniffles while he loosened his grip as the sun starts to rise above the horizon. He still had a fearful look in his eyes as he slowly edged away from me.

"I'm not worth the trouble I keep causing. I constantly keep you awake because of my dreams. It's not fair that you have to suffer because of me. I'm sorry da- Soulver. You should just leave me and go," the little one said, tears threatening to spill from his innocent green eyes.

Hearing the little one say those words, my heart ached as my body acted on it's own, nuzzling him before I uttered a few words, "I would never leave you, not after all you've been through already." It didn't seem fair, it wasn't fair for he was still too young to suffer like this...

"W-why does this keep h-happening to me?" The hatchling choked out.

"I wish I knew the answers little one," so I can rid you of these troubles that keep plaguing you," but I sadly don't..."

Nick hugged me again before saying in a faint whisper, "I don't think I will be able to fall asleep again. I'm too scared of having that dream again. I don't want to see you... to see you..." after that he started to cry again.

Picking up what he meant, "I would never die little one, not as long as I watch over you."

Nick continued to whimper in fear.

"I'm scared I'll see... him again though," he cried out.

"Him? What do you mea-" I stopped mid-sentence, hearing something land outside. Sniffing the air as to what may have landed, my eyes widened before turning into slits for I recognized the first two scents which was soon accompanied by two more scents that I didn't recognize.

"Okay, so you wanted Stormfly to follow the scent of the eggs that lead us to this exact spot." A feminine voice said.

"Yes, that was my plan at the time Astrid. Plus we heard a loud screech almost identical to Toothless' earlier, " the voice of the skinny male viking from before said, making me cautious at their presence.

"Babe, there's nothing here-" I didn't hear the rest for it was at this point the nadder popped its head into the cave through some vines and soon stared directly at me. It must have picked up Nick's scent in here for it sniffed the air, making me more on edge. Mentally slapping myself at their terrible timing, I looked back at the nadder with a threatening glare before it left as Nick pops his head out from under my wing.

Nick's POV:

I saw the Viking and dragon from before land really close to us, followed by a girl and another dragon I had never seen before. The dragon sniffed around as if trying to pick up something, maybe a scent, or something else entirely.

"Well Hiccup, unless you and Toothless have some sort of way of hunting down a nightlight," the female said while crossing her arms, "we are going to have a hard time tracking it down. I have a feeling it's being guarded by... something," she then rubbed her arms like she was cold, "I don't know what, but I'm getting a bad feeling about it."

Now the black dragon started to head in our general direction, his parental compass calling him closer and closer to me. I hugged Soulver's front leg tightly in fear of what this black dragon would do if he found us.

The viking called Hiccup ran his hand through his hair in frustration before whistling for the dragon. The dragon stopped his approach right at the entrance where the nadder was and headed back to Hiccup before the skinny Viking got on the back of his dragon while the female did the same with the other dragon.

"Come on Toothless, they must be close, they have to be. Nobody can outrun a Night fury. Astrid, keep searching with Stormfly, if they're around, we'll find them."

With that, both hiccup and the female called Astrid flew off leaving me shocked and confused.

"Dad, what's a Night Fury?" I asked Soulver in curiosity.

"... The fastest dragon out there in the world with the most precise aim."

I paused, taking in the new information before remembering what was going on before this whole thing started.

"... I still don't think I can go to sleep again without having that horrendous dream." I already felt terrified just by remembering it. I was scared that if i dream about it again... I might never be the same.

I started to shiver violently, fear of the images that had burned themselves into my head. That thing, had not only killed my father in only two hits with a swipe from its paw, but it had choked the life out of me without any effort needed. I wasn't afraid, I was terrified. Seeing Soulver approaching me slowly, I back a couple feet away again, scared that I might hurt him in some way if he got too close.

Seeing as how I kept my distance, he stopped to ask me "What's wrong young Nick?"

"I-I'm terrified I might cause you pain or somehow get you killed. I can't bear the thought of it. It's been a constant fear since you found me and now... I can't get it out of my head on how helpless I would be without you." I shake my head a bit for I was starting to feel drowsy. I would not fall asleep, I couldn't.

Bringing his tail around to bring me closer, "I've told you little one, I would never die or get hurt as long as I watch over you. I won't get harmed so easily if that's what you worried about."

I shake my head in fear. "I'm scared one day that you'll end up getting killed or hurt because I am in danger. At least, that's what keeps happening in my dream..."

Nuzzling me again for the nth time now that I was next to him, "Then I promise that I won't get killed or hurt saving you from danger. Is that alright with you little one?"

I nodded even though I still felt guilty, "Sorry that I woke you. It was such a scary dream."

"Don't fret now little one, for I was waking when it happened. I wouldn't mind missing some rest when it comes to you."

Feeling the urge to explain what I had witnessed in my dream, I took a deep breath. "Can I- can I tell you my dream?" I asked, hoping to get some help or some sort of answer at least.

"If you so desire young Nick."

I took a second deep breath before beginning.

"I was being restrained by a big dragon, almost as big as a mountain I think. It kept looking down at me in its grasp before saying how it could use me, but how it needed to show who the alpha was." I took another deep breath before continuing to the part I dread, "t-then I felt him starting to crush me, slowly. I all could do was whine loudly, trying to call out to you. You came, but the dragon didn't seem worried or even fazed. You told him to get away from me, but he hit with is paw, causing you to shriek out in pain at the impact. Then he hit you again and that's when you... when you..." tears slowly started to form as my body was racked with sobs.

"He decided to let me go so I ran over to you. I tried to wake you. by nudging you, nuzzling you, hugging you. Nothing seemed to work, but then I realized you were dead and so, I let out a howl of anguish and misery. Soon after, the dragon picked me up using his claws and called me a weak, helpless and useless hatchling." My vision blurred as the tears came loose while the nightmare kept replaying in my head.

"T-then he started to crush me. I couldn't breathe, couldn't spit fire. All I could feel was him slowly choking the life out of me before I eventually I blacked out... but not before seeing him toss your dead body away." I finished as I let my fear come loose, sobbing loudly.

Picking me up gently with his claws, he brought me to his chest as he encases us in a scaly cocoon formed by his wings. I closed my eyes and started to panic as a flashback came on how the dragon in my dream had crushed me. I start to struggle in fear before hearing Soulver's voice in a whisper with a calm tone, "It's alright little one, I would never harm you. As long as I watch over you, I won't die until I know your safe and sound from any danger, for I keep that promise."

I stopped struggling, but kept crying, letting out all my fear and sadness. I kept crying until I felt myself getting tired, exhausted from the constant weeping I've done. Soon, my sobs turn to sniffles as I felt my body getting tired, so I hugged Soulver tightly.

"Please don't go," I begged as I felt my exhaustion settling in my body.

"I'll stay as long as you want me to little one, I promise."

"Then... stay with me for as long as you can. You're the only one who has cared for me. I-I couldn't bear it if you left." I said while tightening my embrace as my exhaustion grew.

"...If that's what you desire, then it's fine by me."

I crooned in appreciation before I felt my eyes start to droop since my body was beyond tired and fatigued. I panicked, scared that I'll have the same nightmare again, but I felt Soulver warm me with his inner fire, comforting me as he shifted his position to curl around me.

I started to calm down. I closed my eyes and assured myself that Soulver would always be right there if I ever needed him.

Soulver's POV:

Looking at Nick's small sleeping body, I couldn't help but wish that these nightmares that have been plaguing him to simply go away. Looking outside of the entrance for the morning has gone by, the shadows told me it was around midday.

Hearing wings flapping outside, my ears perked up as my body tightened slightly around Nick's sleeping form as I became tensed. Soon after, I pick up the four scents from earlier on the cliff edge I was on with young Nick on the first day I met him.

"Well, this is where the scent leads. We found some eggshells where Toothless and Luna originally had their nest, so this must be where the Hatchling is." Astrid said as I heard the two dragons land. Soon, I hear footsteps, getting louder and louder as they approached the cave. The skinny male Viking entered the cave first with his night fury close behind.

Seeing the human gave me the urge to scram him out of my cave, but I stayed put for I was keeping Nick hidden from them. The skinny viking who I assume was called Hiccup looked around a bit until his green forest eyes landed on my blood, crimson red ones.

He paused before turning slightly over to his dragon. "... Give us some light bud."

The night fury obliged, charging a blast, but not firing it. It's glow illuminating the cave we were in. As the cave illuminated in a faint purple glow, I saw the female viking called Astrid enter with her nadder. I felt the same urge again when I saw the other viking, but all I did was curl even more tighter around Nick's sleeping form.

Hiccup looked directly at me before looking at Astrid. "I've never seen any dragon like this before." He said with a hint of excitement.

"Yeah, me neither. It's not like any dragon we've seen thus far," Astrid responded.

Hiccup started to walk towards me, but I immediately gave him a low threatening growl for I didn't want any human near me, not anymore.

Toothless growled back, "don't even think about hurting him."

I growled back to the night fury, "And what if I am to hurt him? I don't trust any human, especially vikings."

The nightfury let out a slight chuckle before replying, "First, if you do, it will be the last thing you ever do in life. Second, my human isn't your average viking."

Snorting, I gave the night fury a death glare before responding, "If it would be the last thing I do, then I would be more than happy to do so," then pointing my head at Hiccup, "Even if he is as you say, I still won't let any human near me before burning them to a crisp."

"Alrighty, consider me thoroughly warned," Hiccup interrupted in Dragonese, making me snap my head towards him in mild surprise but I didn't let it show.

"Gods I hate it when you do that," Astrid said as she placed her hand over her heart while taking slpwy breaths to calm herself.

"You're just jealous of me," Hiccup said as he looked at Astrid with amusement in his eyes.

Staying silent for Hiccup seems to know the dragons language, I dared not to say anymore for I didn't trust him. Shifting my position slightly, I continue to watch all four intruders with caution. Nick started to stir, and almost muttered but he stayed silent however to my relief. I didn't want him to be in danger if these intruders prove to be bothersome.

"We don't want to hurt you or do anything. All we want is some information." Hiccup continued in dragonese as he raised his hands slowly as to win my trust. He would be disappointed that he's not winning me over at all.

Toothless stepped forward in front of Hiccup before saying, "Have you seen a hatchling around here that looks mostly black with white spine flaps and ear flaps, or the opposite? It should have either green eyes like mine or blue ones."

Unconsciously curling my tail even more for I knew who they were looking for, I stayed quiet for I didn't trust this dragon nor I didn't want Hiccup to know what I'll say, but I couldn't keep the truth from the dragon if he's who I think he is.

Toothless paused before continuing, "if you ever see or find a hatchling that matches that descrip-"

"I've seen the young, male hatchling you're looking for."

Over 3.1K words! That's huge for me.

yeah yeah, I know this is late... but I try, okay?

The first half was revised by Nick and I so it's at our standards. The second half was all me so if ANYTHING seems out of place, or words don't seem to fit somewhere... criticize me and not Nickdabeast03 for he was gone at the time. That's all I got to say...

I really need to get off my lazy tail.
