Chapter 1
Sickness and Names
————————————————
Hal's POV:
Stirring from my slumber, I slowly open my eyes to see the world covered in darkness for it was the middle of the night. Yawning, I blink my eyes to clear them of drowsiness. Feeling something squirming at my side, I look to see it was the hatchling. His scales felt hot to the touch and his breathing was irregular. He whined in pain and whimpered in fear as he tossed and turned. A couple of his scales were slightly red, indicating some form of infection.
He looked at me and whispered in a raspy voice, "Please... help... me," before he passes out.
Nick's POV:
I woke to my body in constant pain. My scales felt hot and my head was pounding. I tried to croon to get the dragons attention, but he didn't respond. It's like he couldn't see me or hear me to begin with. I tried to chirp, but it came off as a whimper. I whined as a wave of pain courses through my body. My scratches from my first day of life were the main source of the pain. I squirmed, trying to fight off this horrible feeling. I felt pain, and I felt freezing. I tried crying out, I saw the dragon flying away, further and further. I woke and I see the dragon next to me. I whisper to it weakly,
"Pwease... help... me...,"
The world started to fade into darkness as the sickness took hold over my broken body.
Hal's POV:
As the hatchling passes out in front of me, I start to panic and worry. Seeing as how his scratches seem to have cause the infection, I first lick his small wounds clean to prevent it from getting even more worse. After deeming them clean, I take flight with the hatchling in my claws to find somewhere safe for the little one while I try to find any medicinal herbs around. Seeing a small cave at the bottom of the cliff we were on, I go in with extreme caution, the little one's safety came first to me. After seeing the cave was empty and no scent was within, I set the hatchling down in the center and sped out of the cave with only one thing on my mind; finding those medical herbs for the little one. Searching high and low, my mind kept going back to the small hatchling, strengthening my resolve.
Nick's POV:
I awoke in a cave, still in horrible pain and feeling completely ill. I looked around slowly, trying to spot the dragon from before only to realize I couldn't find him. I started crying as I was an enormous amount of pain and I was afraid that he had left me at a cave and had just abandoned me. I tried to walk towards the cave entrance and was only able to move a couple feet before collapsing in pure fatigue and weakness. I felt a trail of tears roll down my eyes as I remember my first day as a hatchling. Even though I knew this dragon for a day, he was the first one who had cared for me and the first dragon I had met in my life. I cry more and more as I become overcome with the thought of dying alone in this cave in pain. I pass out again from the emotional stress and fatigue. But not before letting out a loud whine of anguish.
Hal's POV:
While gathering some Pleurisy roots for the little one, I couldn't help but feel uneasy all of a sudden. Thinking if the hatchling was alright, my uneasiness grew tenfold. Worrying something happened to the little one, I rushed back to the cave with a claw full of roots. As I got closer, the scent of the little one's infection invaded my nostrils, warning me the hatchling was getting worse. As I got closer, I heard him give of a loud whine of anguish, and it broke my heart to hear it. As I reached the caves entrance, I saw that his eyes had tear stains running down from them. Setting the roots aside nearby, I picked him up in my claws gently to lick the remaining tears away before nuzzling him. As the little one stirs, I took notice he had left some knicks on the cave floor with his claws. Hmm... knicks, I think I'll name the little one that; Nick. He may not be my hatchling, but I will care for him like my own.
Setting the newly named hatchling down deeper in the cave, I go back and gather up the roots. As I looked around to turn the roots into medicine for the hatchling, I took notice of a rock with a crater-like hole embedded in it. Putting the roots aside it, I went out to gather some water for it. After a bit of a struggle to get the water into the bowl-shaped rock, I made a human like campfire to heat the water and waited until it started to boil. I then sliced the roots with my claws into tiny pieces like I did with the boar, before gently pouring them into the water to prevent it from spilling. As the water boiled with the roots, the slices started to dissolve, making a mixture that should cure his illness. After cooling it a bit as to not burn the little one, I gently open his mouth to give pour it in. After he gulped it down and putting the rock aside, I curled my body around him like the first night. I wished I could do more for the little one, but I all could do now was to wait for Nick to wake up.
Nick's POV:
I was alone, a black void surrounded me. I couldn't move, I couldn't see, I couldn't hear. I only felt the emotion known as sorrow.
But then, a light appeared. The same dragon from before flew down from that same light. I reached for him as he gestured for me to come with him. His tail reached for me and grabbed hold as we then flew into the light together.
—
I woke up, my body feeling better. I didn't feel hot or in pain. I was still exhausted though. I looked over to see the dragon from before. I chirped to get his attention. The dragon turned towards me and noticed that I was awake.
"I thought you had left me," I said with tears running down my face, "I thought you had left me in this cave and flew off without me."
Nuzzling me gently, he spoke in a soft whisper, "I would never leave you alone little one. One such as yourself should never be alone."
I bury my head into the body of the other dragon and attempt to hug him with my small body. As I continue to cry. I felt so relieved knowing that he never truly left me alone. After being alone for the majority of my small life, it made me happy to hear these words coming from the dragon.
"Thank you, umm..." I hesitate not knowing the dragons name.
"Soulver young Nick," he said, still in whisper
I attempt to repeat the first name, "Soul-Soulvy?" I try to say with as much effort as I can.
He gave off a chuckle before responding, "Soulver little one, but you can call me whatever you like."
I smile before saying, "Father?"
"Sure little one," He said while giving me a small, subtle nod.
I smile and nod my head before tilting it in confusion,"Who is Nick?" I ask.
"I imagine you didn't have a name so I was going to call you Nick, little one. Are you fine with that?"
I started to smile as I repeated my name, "Nick, Nick. Yes I am Nick and you are Father!" I say with enthusiasm.
I yawn from the exhaustion as my body has gone through. I curl up next to Soulver before falling asleep with a smile on my face.
Soulver's POV:
"Father, huh?" I say to myself in a whisper while looking at Nick.
Seeing young Nick asleep warmed my heart as I curled slightly tighter around him to keep him warm and safe. Looking out the cave entrance for it was still night, I think as how I went from a wandering dragon for years to a father so fast. Feeling Nick snuggle closer to me as he purred, I couldn't help but smile softly to his unconscious gesture. Laying my head down while slowly closing my eyes, I couldn't help but wonder what the future may hold for my hatchling.

Okay, for those that are wondering about the sudden POV change, is cause I'm going to put them by the appropriate names of the character it is. Got nothing else to say for I don't do these AU's much and feel like they are just either a slight hassle or seem unnecessary for everyone.
Have a Great Day/Evening/Night!
