Prologue

The wind whipped through the mountain tops, whistling throughout the bleak grey peaks. Snowflakes showered down on the rocky hills, icy crystals that clung to the pelts of the wolves. Their eyes glinted through the white storm, that obscured almost all vision.

The snake woman was here, and it was their obligation to kill her- for their alpha and the family he treasured so dearly.

One wolf then stepped out from the group, his thick chestnut colored fur fluffed up against the cold air. Ears pressed against his head, his glimmering hazel eyes squinted as snow flew into his face. He scanned his assembly of followers, a surge of pride suddenly fluttering from within his chest. They had followed him here with blind trust, to protect a mate that wasn't even theirs. Even as the weather had worsened, no one had turned their back on him. "This will not be in vain." He than barked, lifting his head head. "As servants of our God, we must not let this evil to continue. For my réaltra álainn."

Another wolf stepped forward, throwing her head back and letting out a howl. The others to joined in, their howls echoing throughout the mountain tops. It was a warning of unity and strength to the enemy they would soon face.

A flash of grey then passed them, followed by a splash of crimson that ripped through the whiteness of the air, splattering onto the snowy rocks and onto the frosted pelts of the wolves who stood near. The female wolf had fallen, her throat ripped out in a split second. Everyone was immediately set on edge, their alpha's eyes growing wide.

Just as fast as the wolf had fallen was just as fast as snarls and barks of battle erupted around him.

Something heavy crashed down upon the alpha wolf, a thick scent washing over him. He was thrown down into the icy blanket below. The snow was seeping through his thick fur, reaching his skin and causing the feeling of icy claws gripping his body to almost take his breath. The thought of her face then flashed through his mind, causing a surge of strength to flash through him. With lightning speed, he craned his head around, snapping his teeth at his attacker. His jaws clamped down onto the throat of a large, black feline. The salty, metallic taste of blood filled his mouth. Swinging his head around to pull the feline off of him and to slam her into the ground, he clamped down hard as the sharp pain of her claws slashed over his ears and the side of his face.

As he continued to clamp down, he was thrown from the feline, but skitted to his paws. His head whirled around, blood coating his muzzle, his lip drawing back as growls rumbled deep in his throat. A loud high pitched whine then ripped through the sound of battle. His eyes darted over to a fellow wolf grappling with one of the vampires who had also taken the form of a large, black feline. Without a second's hesitation, he rushed forward, flinging the cat off of his pack mate. His fellow wolf quickly scrambled up, bloody scratches covered their pelt. With a small dip of their head, they rushed off.

The feline creature he had flung from his pack mate had came back at him, but had shifted to their true form. He was a slim young man, with pale white skin, dark hair, and ghostly blue eyes. A hiss came from the man, revealing his fang-like canine teeth as he swung a hatchet down towards the wolf. The alpha growled, rearing up on two paws and lunging at the man. Knocking the man down, he went down with him. The hatchet was still plunged deep into his shoulder, sending searing pain through his cold body. The pain acted as a distraction.

Quickly, the man pulled the hatched from him before plunging it back in farther up the alpha's shoulder. Letting out a frustrated snarl, he opened his mouth and quickly clamped down on the man's skull, the bone crunching like an eggshell between his teeth.

He wasted no more time, quickly pulling away from the man and leaping away. His shoulder almost buckled beneath his own weight when he landed. Gritting his teeth, he craned his neck back to quickly lap his tongue at the wound, the blood beginning to clump up in the fur around the wound. The icy air around him was beginning to numb to pain, but his shoulder would stay stiff as he continued to fight.

Finally lifting his attention from the wound, his gaze searched his surroundings. The once clean, white landscape had became a red stained field of death, bodies from both sides littering that field. The fighting had only died down because so many had fallen. The pride he once felt had quickly retreated. It was replaced with a heavy feeling of defeat and regret. He was certain that this was the way to the victory he had waited so long for, but no... He was wrong. This was only the way to death, and he had led so many to it... Including himself.

Something then suddenly shot through his side, followed by a pain so intense that his body completely crumbled in pain. His eyes burned, his yelp trapped in his throat as he slumped down. An entrance wound cut through his side, blood beginning to gush from it. There was only one cause for a single bullet to cause such intense feelings of pain...

A silhouette of someone then appeared behind the sheet of snowflakes, soon emerging to stand in front of the wolf. She was short, and much younger looking than he initially expected. Though she had the crimson hair, it was cut short, in curly locks that reached her shoulders, and her eyes were a shade of green, but rather resembled a cat's, not a snake's. This girl may be related to The Snake Woman , but she was not her. He had been tricked, and was such a fool to fall for this.

The girl stood there for a moment, a silver pistol in the hand beside her. She looked down upon him, a soft smirk slowly forming on the gentle features of her face. "You mongrels must think you're so smart." She hissed, though satisfaction shone in the depths of her eyes. The alpha panted heavily, their eyes both trained on each other. An icy silence dragged on between the two, somehow making the air around them seem even more frozen.

The girl then slowly lifted the pistol in her hand, training it on the alpha wolf. "Have you ever seen God?" The question seemed genuine as it came from her mouth, though there was an underlying tone. The alpha gazed at her, closing his muzzle and swallowing hard. No was the answer, but the question she asked was only to weaken his faith.

"No." He answered, his attempts to sound strong undermined as his voice began to quiver softly. "But I do not have to see in order to know that he stands beside me."

"Stands beside you?" The girl cocked her head to the side. "But... where is he now?"

The bullet then ripped through his chest.
