Chapter 1: The Middle School Jungle

———————————————————————————

There were three things that made life awesome!

Number Three: Baking Sweets.

Number Two: Being BFFS with the popular girls in school since 5th grade and Number One is my best friend, Mckayla Queens's 15th Birthday Party!

In fact, as I kept walking down the hallway, guys kept giving each other high fives and girls hugging felt so nice to see.

  School always took away big smiles I suppose. As I kept walking down the hallways, my eyes were drawn to one of my other friends, Tracey Cheng, her back was to her locker, and she was on her phone with a totally new look. Her dark brown hair had blonde streaks and a bit of an ombre going on, and she kept fixing the sunglasses on her head as she kept on texting someone.

I walked over to her, and she looked up at me, smacking on some gum. "Oh, hey Rosey." she put her phone in the pocket of her pants.

I sighed and waved back at her with a smile. Ah "Rosey" The old nickname plagued my elementary school and my middle school years like a virus. Rosetta or Rose sounded better, it even fit more! But it's way too late to tell people that I wasn't fangirling over the name. So, I guess I'm stuck with it.

"Hey Trace. You changed your hair." I pointed out, Tracey grinned and pushed up her bun. "Oh really? Thanks, Mckayla and I decided to get our hair done last weekend! It was so much fun."

"Last weekend, huh?"

"Yep, it takes a lot of time to look good, some of us need a bit of fixing up, I'd think you'd know about fixing up your look!" Tracey giggled as I nod my head and sighed, I looked at my own hair.

My own ombre was just black to brown, nothing really show-stopping. I looked back at Tracey and smiled. "Anyway, did you get your invite for Mckayla's party?"

"Of course, she gave it to me yesterday!" Tracey open her locker and grabbed the invite and flaunt it in my face. "It's so cute, right? Mckayla is so sweet!"

I nod my head and opened my own locker. "Yeah, she's great. Of course she's great." I put my backpack inside, and I looked up to the second mini shelf, a green and black envelope with my name written in yellow!

"Woah, cool! Mckayla gave me an invite! That's awesome!" I laughed, Tracey quickly slam her locker. "Oh my god, shut up!"

"What?" I blinked at her as Tracey shook her head and placed a big smile on her face, but it stretched too far. "Uh, no! I'm kidding, I can't believe she invited you of all people! You must feel so lucky."

"I guess so." I smiled, Tracey smiled back at me and quickly check her phone. "Oh well, it seems like I have to go! I'll see you in math class, bye~" Tracey strutted away as I shook my head and put the invite in my bag.

As I did so, a kiss was pressed against my cheek, "Hi baby~" I turned my head, and I couldn't stop the smile from getting on my face when I saw Andrew Thomspon! With his dreamy honey-coated brown eyes and his light brown skin with his dark brown locs, and his big smile with the dimples only drove the butterflies in my stomach crazy.

"Hi~ How are you?" I giggled, Andrew draped his arm around my shoulder and smiled. "I'm good, I'm with my number 1 girl."

"O-oh! Okay!" I laughed nervously; I shook my head and walked alongside with Andrew, with each step we took, I felt like I was closer to cloud nine. As we walked, Andrew gives fist bumps and high-fives to the other guys while girls on the right of me gave death glares and angry whispers, but I've gotten used to it. Dating the popular guy in school will have a lot of people jealous, it's just rocket science!

As I walked up the stairs, Andrew let go of my shoulder and kept staring at his phone, I glanced at his screen for like a few seconds but then he shoved it into his pocket, he smiled and kissed me on the cheek again. "Hey, baby? I'm gonna go to class now, see you at lunch?"

"Yeah, sounds good." I smiled, Andrew flashed a smile at me before patting me on the shoulders and rushing off, while I walked up the stairs to Mrs. Mark's class, but with each step, I couldn't help but think about how private Andrew's been with his phone lately, like he's been on it, like a lot. But then again, I'd been on my phone a lot too.

I guess it's basically "Boys can be so strange."

Mrs. Mark always made sure we didn't screw up by any chance and did whatever we could to study and do well. Even if school was nearing the last month, she still wants us all to study hard and do our best.

Her class wasn't that hard, in fact I always had decent grades in the class and Tracey was there, answering all of the questions and being smart, but there's one thing in class that kind of freaks me out.

Although there's one thing that kind of scares me, her name being Jade Williams.

The "thing" being Jade Williams. I don't know much about her, but what I do know is that visually, she scares me. She had light brown skin with a bunch of freckles over it and copper braids.
She had safety pins all over her hair, piercings and a big leather jacket with skull patches and rock bands on it.

When I sat next to Tracey, Jade was the back of the class, doing her work or listening to headphones. Tracey scoffed and rolled her eyes when looking at her. "That girl is so weird."
"What do you mean?"

"Just look at her! I'm pretty sure she even has tattoos underneath her sleeves." Tracey snickered as I shrugged. "Uh, yeah, I guess so."

"I heard that she's always using drugs and stuff, she does all of the stuff you can think of, like crack, weed, whatever you say, she's probably doing it." Tracey smirked, I glanced over at Jade again, she didn't seem like she was doing anything wrong, all she did was her work and possibly drawing some doodles, but I couldn't tell from being so far away from her.

When it was time to do some independent work, she grabbed those big black headphones of her with little stickers, clearly playing something on her phone. Our eyes met for a bit, her eyes were huge like owls, I gave a nervous smile and looked back at my work, glancing at Ms. Mark and glancing back at Jade from time to time, I wonder what could go on in a head like hers.

But I guess I won't know for a long, long time.

Standing in line for lunch was really frustrating. Everyone felt too slow, and I could feel my sanity slipping the moment I could.

By the time I got my tray, my feet ached like rusty nails. I walked around just observing for a bit when I saw Mckayla sitting on top of the lunch table, laughing along with Tracey and Andrew. Mckayla had to be the coolest girl I'd ever met in my life. She had nice beige skin with light green eyes with blonde streaks in her black hair and she had this cool spiky back ponytail with the rest of her hair down. She wore these straight-let pants with a thick belt and had a bit of eyeliner on. Whatever they were laughing about, I could bet that McKayla make a really funny joke.

I took a seat next to Andrew, when he turned over and smiled at me, "Hey baby!" He flashed a grin, as McKayla and Tracey looked over to me, Mckayla smiled and cleared her throat, "Hey Rosey." She waved as she got off the table and sat down next to me and leaned back a bit. "Hey guys. What were you talking about?"

"Oh, just some girl we know, she's annoying." Mckayla rolled her eyes, Tracey smirked and drank from her water bottle, "Yeah, she sucks. But hey, there's more important things then her, like your birthday party, Mckayla! It's gonna be tons of fun! How many people did you invite?"

"Mm, probably the whole 8th grade." McKayla shrugged, "Anyway, we can rest assured that my party's gonna rock." McKayla smirked, "It'll practically be the gold standard."

"Please, your party will beat the golden standard, everyone knows you're amazing, McKayla." Tracey gushed as McKayla leaned back in her seat and smiled.

"Oh, well-"

"So, what kind of food will you have, McKayla?" Tracey interjected, "Eh, nothing fancy. Pizza, burgers, fries and some sandwiches. That's all."

I sighed and just kept eating my food while they talk about McKayla's party.

Andrew was on his phone, texting one of his buddies as I kept eating my food, I stood up in order to get some juice, but when I did, I noticed McKayla moving over to where I was sitting and getting really close with Andrew.

"Wouldn't trust her if I was you."
I looked back to see Jade eating by herself with her big headphones behind her neck.

"What?" I asked, Jade looked at me with big owlish eyes before she shook her head and kept eating.

I looked back at Andrew as he smiled harder at McKayla's joke. I turned my head.
They're just good friends, nothing more nothing less.

~~~~~
Three ways I get home are Mom picks me up from her job, I walk home or bike home.
But since I came with a bike, I'll ride back with my bike. The two things I like when I'm biking, I see a bunch of different kinds of people. Like guys with big fluffy beards with shiny bald heads or older, wrinkly women holding tiny puppies in their arms like purses.
As I biked in front of my house, the front black gate opens automatically, the big, round water fountain shot up streams of water as I peddled around it and parked near the steps, but before I could even enter the house.
Dakota, my older sister opens the door so wide that I thought I was going to fall backwards and fall in the bushes, like the other day.
She swung her loose curls bounced with a white headband on her headband in a yellow tracksuit.
"Yeah, gurl don't worry, I'll see you at practice."
When she hung up her phone, she turned her head and stared at me with her sharp eyeliner.
"When did you get here?"
"Ten seconds ago. You also need to stop swinging the doors so much, I could have fallen in the bushes again."
Dakota rolled her eyes. "Don't be dramatic, you didn't fall in the bushes."
"I did! McKayla had to come over here to pull me out!" I exclaimed; Dakota's eyes narrowed when McKayla's name came out of her lips.
She rolled her eyes again. "Yeah, yeah. Whatever. I'm going off to practice. Mom's inside."
Before I said more, Dakota placed herself inside of her long pastel blue car and drove away.
Like Dakota said, Mom was at the kitchen table, typing away at her laptop, and also on the phone talking to someone.
"Yes, yes. I'm looking at the files right now. Everything should be in order for tomorrow, we have to make sure everything goes well."
When I stare at her, I could hear my grandma's voice telling me how I l kept on looking like her everyday."
"Smooth dark skin, beautiful Pansy eyes and nice curls." She always says. "Hell, I'd think you'd be twins."
I don't mind it. I mean, of course we'd look alike, we're related. But I wish people would saw the difference too, like how I have been straightening my hair since 6th grade, Andrew, McKayla and Tracey always tell me I look hotter with straight hair.
At least I don't get compared to my dad all of the time, it's hard to compare and contrast when he doesn't exist at all.
"Hey mom." I waved, but she was too distracted. So, I walked upstairs.
I peeked inside of Layla's room to see what she was up to; she's at her desk reading her book while her laptop sat on top of her desk. Her room looked like a miniature library, with how each book lined up from A to Z. It's perfect.
Layla's braids were in big space buns and kept pushing up her rectangle glasses from sidling up her face.
Layla had tied up her braids into a large bun, and kept pushing up her glasses, since they kept sliding off her face. Besides the fact that Layla's skin tone was lighter than mom's, which wasn't really saying much, they both had the same rectangle glasses.
"Mm?" She looked up and saw me, she furrowed her eyebrows in confusion, "Oh hey Rose. What is it?"
"Oh nothing!" I replied as I entered her room, "Whatcha reading?"
"Oh, this is a good one!" Layla grinned. "It's called Miss Pink. She solves crime in plaid and in style."
The book is covered with pink sparkles and cute hearts at the edge of the book, it'd looked so beautiful on my bookshelf! But no, I can't have it.
"Oh, well that's cute and all but I can't read it, I'm too old for that stuff."
Layla rolled her eyes, "Uh, last time I check, Miss Pink is for everyone. Just because you get older, doesn't mean you can't have a good time, take it from me."
Layla beamed as she held out the book for my eyes to see, the pretty sparkles and the big bow on top begging, screaming at me to take it away from my sister's hand.
"Uh, fine! Whatever! I'm sure I can give it to some other kid, at school. Probably." I snatched the book and held it to my chest.
"Thank you, now someone in the world will love this book until the end of the time, and it won't be me."
"Alright, alright. I gotcha ya." Layla giggles as I left her room and held the book. Yes, maybe Miss Orchid caught my eye, but that didn't mean anything! I mean, even its the sparkiest book covers I'd ever seen in my life, I had to be mature and calm and pretty sparkles won't do me any favors!
I walked back into my room and placed the book on my bed and started to clean out my room, since everything felt out of place. There's always a mess to be cleaned up and where that mess will be, I'll be right there to stop it.
The place I started with was my walk-in closet, in where I saw the guitar that I'd bought for Mckayla's birthday, wrapped perfectly with wrapping. I'd taken great care of making sure nobody saw or knew about the guitar until her birthday party! I shouldn't be too worried, Guarantee, she'll love it!
As I placed the guitar back and began hanging out stuff that fell to the ground and fixing up anything, I moved over to my bedroom drawer and organizing more of my clothes, to my shock, there were a lot of things unaccounted for!
A loose pen, a 5-dollar bill and, most shockingly, a diary, but not just any kind of diary. The time of diary that other pretty, popular girls would own as they write about their perfect lives and their hot boyfriends. The only thing I could relate was the hot boyfriend, but the perfect life is thrown into the trash, easily.
As I open the diary, a small card fell out, with the words, "From Mckaya." When I open the note, it read " -To Rosey"
"- I thought you might like the gift, you're quite the softie, so yeah, enjoy. -"
-From Mckayla, 8/25/23-
I sighed, of course, this diary was a gag gift from Mckayla on my birthday! We had it at the mall, and after she gave me this diary, she actually gave me a cute leather jacket with black fur cuffs at the end of the sleeves.
Looking at the diary itself, it was a light purple thing with four bows in different corners, with polka dots on with each one, if I was 10, I'd buy it without question, even now I would, but I couldn't, if I did that, then that's just asking for a social death!
But nobody was in my room, everyone was at their houses, doing whatever, and I wouldn't snitch on myself, I trust me! I'd say I'm pretty reliable.
A smirk came to my face as I grabbed a pen and laid down in my comfy bed and got to writing, somethings are better, close to the chest.
~Dear Diary, I suppose~
~Hi, it's me. You know, the girl that shoved you into a drawer for an entire year and forgot that you were there, my bad~
~Sorry that you'd been shafted away for so long, but at least I'm here now, writing in you. ~
~Now, there's so many to tell! Like my best friend's party coming up soon, and the perfect gift! I just need to keep cool and calm, and everything will work out fine! God, I'm so excited! ~
~I hope things work out with you, diary, I kind of do like you! Well, I can't tell anyone that I like you, otherwise everyone would make fun of me for it, including Mckayla, Tracey and Chase and especially Andrew. ~
~So, for now you're a secret, a pastel pink, ruffly, polka-dotted bow secret all for me. Maybe that won't be so bad~
