Four 🐚

Back at the kingdom, Josh arrives home, only to be scolded by his father for missing the concert. Brendon stands close by.

"Dad, forgive me, I'm so sorry. I just forgot-"

"As a result of your careless behavior-"

"Careless and reckless behavior!" Ryan added.

"The entire celebration was-"

"Ruined! Completely destroyed! This concert was going to be the pinnacle of my distinguished career-"

"Ryan!" King Bill Dun scolded.

"But I didn't mean to!" Josh cried.

"Josh, listen. You've been give a gift, your mother's voice. It's a wondrous talent, one that demands stewardship and care. So please dear child, for the sake of her memory-"

I know dad. I know."

"It wasn't Josh's fault!" Brendon cried. "We were gonna come back straight away. But then Dallon started goin on and on about human stuff-"

"Dallon? Human stuff? You went up to the surface?!" King Bill Dun cried.

"Um...nothing happened."

"You could've been seen by one of those barbarians!"

Dad they're not barbarians!"

"They're dangerous! net, harpoons! You're my youngest-"

"I'm old enough to look after myself-"

"As long as you live under my reef, you'll obey my rules!"

"If you'd just listen to me for once-"

"That's the last time you're ever swimming to the surface! Understood?"

"You're so unfair!"

Josh bursts into tears and swims away, followed by Brendon.

"Agh!" He's stubborn as a barnacle."

"Teenagers." Ryan said. "Give then an inch, and they swim all over you."

"I can govern a kingdom, but I can't control my own son. Maybe I was too harsh."

"Nonsense sire!" Ryan shouted. "If you ask me, you haven't been tough enough."

"I haven't?" King Bill Dun asked.

"Josh needs constant supervision. Someone to watch over him to keep him out of trouble."

"That's not a bad idea."

"I'd say it's a right good one."

"And you are just the guy to do it!"

"What?" Ryan asked.

"You heard me!" From now on, Josh is your responsibility!"

King Bill Dun makes his way out of the throne room. Ryan follows him, pleading.

"Mine? But your majesty, he's a clever merman! I'm just a crustacean! Surely you ought to pick someone high on the evolutionary ladder."

Meanwhile, Josh, distraught after his fight with his father, goes to his secret grotto, where he keeps all his human treasures. He sits among them and holds his newly acquired fork. Brendon floats nearby.

"If only I could make my father understand. I just don't see how a world that makes such wonderful things could be so bad."

Look at this stuff?
Isn't it neat
Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?
Wouldn't you think I'm a boy

A boy who has, everything?

Look at this trove
Treasures untold
How many wonders can one cavern hold?
Looking around here you think

Sure, he's got everything

I've got gadgets and gizmos a plenty
I've got whozits and whatzits galore

"You want thing a-ma-bobs? I've got twenty."

But who cares?
No big deal
I want more

I wanna be where the people are
I wanna see
Wanna see them dancing
Walk-in around on those

"What do you call them? Oh, feet."

Flippin your fins
You don't get too far
Legs are required for jumpin, dancin
Strollin along down the

"What's that word again?"

Street

Up where they walk
Up where they run
Up where they stay all day in the sun

Wanderin free
Wish I could be
Part of that world

What would I give
if I could live out of these waters
What would I pay
To spend a day warm on the sand

Betcha on land
They understand
That they don't
Reprimand their sons

Bring young men
Sick of swimmin
Ready to stand

And ready to know what the people know
Ask them my questions and get some answers
What's a fire and why does it
What's the word, burn

When it's my turn
Wouldn't I love
Love to explore the shore up above

Out of the sea
Wish I could be

Part of that world
