Natsu
When Natsu woke up, it was morning.
Hm, he thought as he tried to move around, maybe I shouldn't have fallen asleep last night. Where am I? He raised an arm to shield his eyes from the sun, and jumped with surprise when he saw the black wing instead of a human arm. This led to him falling off of wherever he was on, and he only just remembered that he had been turned into a bird, and quickly flapped his wings to prevent himself from falling to his death for the second time in less than 24 hours.
"Stupid old grandpa!" he yelled as he made his way back up the building he was next to. He landed on a windowsill, where the window was closed and the curtain was drawn. Something told him a good thing would happen if that window opened, so Natsu began singing as loud as he could.
"Oh, my name is Natsu and my dad is Igneel," he yelled, not bothering to sing in tune. "I'm looking for him, who gives me the, um, feels. His, uh, favorite color is teal. We, uh . . ." As Natsu tried to come up with another rhyming word for "Igneel," the window finally opened.
Natsu stopped singing and stared at the little girl who put all her strength into opening the window between them. She looked no older than how he had looked when he was still a kid. This made him remember the old man turning him into a bird, and Natsu scowled deeply just as the girl finally got the window open and stuck her head out.
"Hello, little birdie," she said with a huge smile on her face. "Are you the friend the stars sent down?"
She continued talking, but Natsu didn't bother to pay attention. One would think he had learned his lesson after yesterday, but he still got sidetracked by other ideas.
Why am I here? he grumbled to himself. I thought this would lead me to Igneel. . . . I'm hungry.
At that moment, the little girl reached her hands out to Natsu, carefully cupped him in her palms, and brought him inside her room, before slamming the window shut. Natsu's first impulse had been to get away from the girl's hands, but he realized how warm and comfortable it was to be next to her.
"So, what's your name?" The little girl suddenly lifted her hands up, so she and Natsu were eye to eye. "I'm Lucy. Lucy Heartfilia."
"Hey, Luigi," Natsu replied. "I'm Natsu Dragneel."
The girl gasped. "You replied to me! Can you understand what I'm saying?"
Natsu just stared at the girl for a while, unsure of how to reply, when the door behind her began to open.
"Miss Lucy? Would you like today's breakfast downstairs, or in your room?"
Breakfast? That meant food. Natsu flew out of Lucy's hands, ready to fly out the door and find wherever food was, but she quickly blocked Natsu's path and gently threw him under her bed.
As Lucy spoke with the maid, Natsu tried to work his way past the girl. He was just about to peck at her hand, when she suddenly smiled at Natsu. For some reason, the smile felt so nice and so comforting, Natsu fell limp, not trying to fight against the angel across from him.
Lucy began speaking to Natsu again, but he was too busy thanking the heavens for sending him to this home.

Lucy
That morning, Lucy woke up to a very loud bird's cry. Curious, she went over to her window, drew back the curtain, and gasped in delight at the little bird separated from her by only glass. Was he the friend the stars had sent down for her? She eagerly opened the window with much effort and stuck her head as far out the window as she could.
"Hello, little birdie. Are you the friend the stars sent down?" The bird had stopped singing a long time ago, and he didn't seem to be have been paying attention to what Lucy had said, but she didn't care.
"Today would've been the seventy seventh day I would've prayed for a friend," she told the bird. "You look like the perfect friend! I could show you all of my dolls, and we can play every day! I have a lot of dolls we can share. I don't mind sharing." Lucy stopped talking for a moment to stick her head back in the room and stop standing on her tiptoes. It was painful staying like this. She would have to bring the bird inside.
Carefully, Lucy stood on her tiptoes again and reached her arms out to where the bird was perched.
"Come on, birdie," she cooed. She gently coaxed her hands under the bird, then brought him inside the room. She balanced him one hand temporarily so she could close the window and move back the curtain, then used both hands to lift the bird up to her face.
"So, what's your name?" She couldn't just him "birdie" all the time. "I'm Lucy. Lucy Heartfilia."
Lucy didn't really expect the bird to respond in any way, as she was just talking to the bird for her own fun, so she was pleasantly surprised when the bird cawed right after she had introduced herself.
"You replied to me!" she said, gasping with excitement. "Can you understand what I'm saying?" Her eyes shone, waiting for the bird to say something again, but he only stared at her. However, he was looking at her, so Lucy thought he at least understood what she was saying. Before she could test this theory out, however, she heard the door open.
"Miss Lucy?" the maid called through the open door. "Would you like today's breakfast downstairs, or in your room?"
She usually ate downstairs, as having the maids in the same room as her while she ate made her feel less lonely, but she had a friend today. A friend who suddenly seemed very eager to leave the room. Maybe he had understood what "Breakfast" was, and was hungry.
"Um, I think I'd like to have it in my room today, please," Lucy said as she tried to prevent Natsu from flying out by keeping him under her bed. "With more food than usual this time." She stopped to flash a grin at Natsu, who suddenly stopped struggling. "I'm feeling more hungry than usual today."
"Yes, miss."
It was clear to Lucy that the maid was stunned at Lucy's choice, but she was too busy focused on the bird to care.
"I think you can understand what people say," she told the bird. Then, she giggled, bringing the bird close to her. "We're going to have so much fun together!"
