Chapter 2
I wake up and stare at the ceiling for a while, thinking about what happened yesterday. Who knew getting sugar drunk would be that bad. I can't imagine getting actually drunk, but I'm going to do it anyway. When I get older, of course.
My headache and stomachache are gone, but I don't know about Avery, considering she is still sleeping. Wow, even when she is sleeping, she looks flawless. Finally, she wakes up, probably because she can feel me staring at her. I can't see why she isn't dating anyone. I mean, she's like the prettiest person I know.
"Brownie?" I say sitting up on the bed on the bed. I call her Brownie because of her brown eyes, and she likes to call me Cookie because the day we met I was eating cookies and had crumbs all over my little face. Those were the days. "Good Morning Cookie," she says drowsily, turning towards me also. "Want to go get something to eat from Starbucks today? I can bring my Driver's ED books so I can study to get my drivers license soon," I say, getting out of bed, and stretching. She sits up, smiling. Avery has always been a morning person, and I could go either way. Sometimes I'm a night owl and sometimes I'm a morning person. It depends on my mood.
"Ok then. Come on, let's get dressed. And maybe you can meet a cute guy in the process," she says, and winks at me. "I doubt that I will find someone that fast," I say, and roll my eyes. "Who knows?" she says, winking again. I smile at her, and then Avery gets out of bed, and we get dressed, without anymore winks.
When we go down the hall, we see my Aunt enjoying a cup of green tea, and listening to "Watercolors", a smooth jazz station, in our clutter free living room. Our whole house is pretty much clean. We greet my Aunt, and tell her where we are going. Once she approves, we venture out of the house. We hop in Avery's Nissan Sentra, and head off. The streets are super busy, which is very common in New York City, so instead of taking us like 5 minutes to get to Starbucks, it takes us around 20. New York, New York.
When we walk in, the smell of Cake Pops and Coffee greets us. Then once we walk in further, all we can smell is
Lemon Bread. This makes me, and probably Avery, exceedingly hungry, and we walk up to the counter, ready to order. She orders for the both of us because she knows what I like already, and I'm just standing there on my phone.
"Will that be all?" the barista says, and I hear a charming voice. I look up from my phone. Thank God I did that. The barista boy is absolutely... perfect. Dark brown cropped hair, somewhat tan skin, freckles across the bridge of his nose, the prettiest sky blue eyes (and I swear I can see clouds in them), and he wears the cutest glasses ever. Big and Nerdy, just how I like them. Not the guy, the glasses of course.
"H-h-hi..." I say, and warmth rushes to my cheeks. Damn it, I stuttered. "H-hi there..." he says, glancing at me and then looking down at the register instead of at me, blushing. He must be nervous too. Glad to know I'm not the only one. A tall skinny girl comes up behind him, and gives him our orders, and then pats him on the back. He just smiles at her. I feel jealousy for the first time in forever. I mean, he is my boyfriend, he just doesn't know it yet. He hands us our drinks, and I stare at the balance on the cash register. Avery pays, and while she puts her wallet away, I snatch our drinks from the counter, and speed walk over to a booth in the corner. I set my books and the drinks down, and run back over to Avery, pushing her into the booth in front of me.
"Ow. Watch it, will you?" she says, rubbing her arm. Completely ignoring her last statement, I say, "Did you see that barista?" She nods glancing at him, as he serves two other girls. For some reason, I feel a hint of jealousy, again. "OMG, I didn't notice, but he is so dreamy," replies Avery. I clear my throat, and glare at her in a playful way. "Sorry," she says looking down, and sipping her drink. I do the same and open my book. I try to read, but I am too distracted by the thought of him.
"Do you think....I might have a chance with him?," I ask. Avery looks up from the Instagram post on her phone. She glances at him, then at me, then at him, then at me, then at him, then at me, and she finally says, "Yep."
"Finally, it took you like six years to answer," I say, laughing. She laughs also, and even her laugh is perfect! He might as well take her instead of me. That's probably what he wants.
"I'm gonna go get some Lemon Bread, and a refill. Do you want anything?" Avery asks me, but I am too busy staring at the dreamy-eyed, perfect barista, who I might have a tiny chance with. "Earth to Emily," she says, waving a hand in front of my face. I jolt back to reality, blushing again. She chuckles, and I roll my eyes. "Do you want anything?" she repeats. "Other than that eye-candy right there? Not really," I say, putting my elbow on the table and placing my chin on my hand, staring straight at the barista. I'm pretty sure my pupils are shaped like hearts at this point.
Soon enough, the barista takes off the apron he had on, hangs it up on a hook somewhere, and disappears into an 'Employees' room. After about 3 minutes, he comes out, and cleans his station. When he finishes, he comes out from behind the counter. I'm pretty sure his shift just ended, and I don't want to miss the chance to talk to him, but I stay seated where I am. I can't just risk it all. I begin to brainstorm ideas on how I could get him to like me. The only thing I can things of is getting a job here at the same time he works, but I don't think that could happen. I have no more ideas, so, I just go back to studying for my Driver's Test that I will be taking soon, until the barista walks up to our table! Shit. I think my hair is messed up, and I didn't put on any makeup this morning!
"Hey... Umm... I couldn't help but notice that you two girls were sitting over here by yourselves. Where are your boyfriends? Surely two beautiful ladies like you would have boyfriends, right?" he says, looking nervous as ever. Flirt game, activated. "Actually, I'm dating someone, but Emily here isn't," Avery says, nudging me with her foot from under the table. She isn't really dating anyone. She is just helping, how thoughtful of her, even though I'm sure she likes him too. I pop my head up from reading the book, and warmth immediately rushes to my cheeks as the barista is extremely close to us. From this short distance, I can read his nametag. It says, "Hunter". What a cute name, for a super cute guy.
"Em! You just completely ignored Hunter's question!" Avery says, punching me on the arm playfully.
"Oh! Huh?! I'm sorry... I was distracted. What was the question?" I say, being super awkward.
"My name is Hunter, what's yours?" Hunter says, smiling at me and reaching out to shake my hand. I shake his hand and say, "My name is Emily."
"Hi, Emily. You seem really nice, and really adorable. Ummm, Why don't I take you out sometime and we maybe get to know each other better?" he says, smiling at me and gently kissing my hand. My eyes open wide, as I stare at his hand in mine. "ARE YOU KIDDING, YES!" I yell. All the people in the shop are staring at us, and for some reason, even the music stops.
After everyone returns to their duties, Avery kicks me under the table. "I mean... Y-Yeah, that could be a possibility," I say, putting my feet up on the table, but in the process, I knock my drink down, and it falls and splatters all over him! "Shit! I'm so sorry," I say, and immediately grab napkins. I start on his shoes, and awkwardly work my way up. I stop at a certain place, but skip it and continue moving, not wanting to stare.
"That's fine. It's alright," he says. What the hell is wrong with me! "Emily, you don't have to do this. I'm fine. It's completely OK," he says, taking the napkins out of my hand. I stand up, accidentally hitting my head on the table, blushing fiercely. "I am so so sorry... I didn't mean to spill it on you... it was an accident, and I'm so clumsy sometimes-," I say, trying not to cry, but I am interrupted by Hunter kissing me!!! Like a full on the lips kiss. Not cheeks, but lips! All the tears in my eyes disappear. He is a really good kisser. Me on the other hand...
I stand there awkwardly trying to kiss him back, not knowing where to put my hands or what do to with my mouth and hands on his face. Like most teenage girls, I should have practiced on my pillow. I hope people in the shop aren't staring at us. When he pulls away, my lips immediately feel cold. I glance at Avery and she's sitting there gawking, and Hunter is just smiling at me. Those pearly white teeth go perfect with his bright sky blue eyes.
"Well now I know how to shut you up," he says playfully. "Come on, you girls seem like you need some fresh air. I can walk you to your car, if you have one. If you don't I could just as easily give you a ride if you're interested-" he says, but Avery interrupts him. "Emily would love to ride with you! I have a car," she says, smirking at me. "Ok then," Hunter says, and takes my hand, beginning to walk towards the door. At this point I don't even know what's going on, I am just following him, grinning widely. A super hot guy just kissed me, and now is offering to give me a ride home! I glance back at Avery, only to see her sticking two thumbs up at me and getting out of the booth.
I look forward, then back again at Avery and see that she is following us, carrying my two Driver's ED books that I brought with me. I'm so glad I have my phone in my purse at all times, otherwise she would be carrying it and that would be awkward. We reach a really expensive looking black Mercedes Benz in the parking lot, and I gasp. "Is this YOUR car?" I ask, gawking at it. "No, it's just a random car I have the keys to. Yes it's my car!" he says, sarcastically at first, but then smiles at me. "Are your parents rich or something?" I ask, putting a hand gently onto the car. "I seriously hate to brag, but.......yes. They are. My parents are Nathan and Abigail Roberts," he says, blushing. No......Freakin'.......Way!
"THE Nathan and Abigail Roberts! The owners of one of the biggest electronic franchises in the world!? You would think someone like you wouldn't be working at Starbucks," I say, utterly surprised. "I chose to work at Starbucks because one you get free coffee, and who wouldn't like that, and two I like staying humble about my money," he says, smiling at me.
Okay, he is absolutely perfect. Rich, but doesn't brag about it like every other rich person I know! "Plus it prepares me for running the family business one day. Well, at least that's what my dad said," he continues, and goes around to get into the driver's seat. I jump into the passenger's seat and put my address into the GPS, and then we're off! The ride is so smooth and amazing, it's unbelievable! I can't even imagine how much this car cost. Probably more than my house! Damn, Avery must be so jealous. Just Kidding! She would never be jealous of her best friend. Or would she...
After a comfortable ride, without the radio playing, which is awkward for me, we arrive. "We're here," Hunter says, getting out of the car. I unbuckle my seatbelt and adjust my purse, which is strapped across my body. I try to pull the latch, and get out of the car on my own, but Hunter comes up and holds the door open for me. What a gentleman! He also closes the car door for me, and walks me to the front door.
"Oh! Before I forget," he says, and hands me a folded up piece of paper, "Don't open it until you get to your room. Anyway, cya around," he says, and turns around to go back to his car. I stare at the black leather jacket he put on, that perfectly matches his car. I never noticed how beautiful his backside was until now... I shake that thought out of my head, let out a sigh, and go inside, shutting the door and going through the living room and down the hall, finding Avery already in my room. I think my Aunt is in her room as well. "So... how did the car ride go!?" she asks, bouncing on my bed slightly. I just smile, and tell her all about it. I place the piece of paper on my dresser, while talking. After talking about it, I think maybe, just maybe, Hunter and I were meant to be.
