The Visitors
"No Masego, put that down!". I struggled to pull my little brother away from the large pot of flour in my lap. I stumbled and he managed to grab a handful and thrust it at the chickens. "No!", I shouted, but it was too late. There goes one loaf of bread that could have made a good breakfast. "Did you have to do that Masego?", he responded with a cheerful little gurgle. I took the rest of the flour and carried it into our tiny home. The house wasn't much but it always had the soothing sound of Ugogo on her creaky rocking chair. There was always the familiar smell of Mama's cooking. Tonight she was making Bobotie. It is Papa's favorite and he will be leaving to go to the city soon. "Did you beat the mats yet, Abena?", asked Mama. "No because Masego distracted me with all his mischief", I smiled as I rubbed my little brother's brown curls. "You know Papa will be leaving soon. You need to take your chores more seriously, there will be no time for mischief", said Mama. "Ok, I'm sorry. I will get my work done sooner", I said as I went outside to beat the mats. I started on Ugogo's bed mat. It was a beautiful mat with colors and designs all over it. It reminded me of all the little scales on the fish in the river. I had just finished the last mat, when I saw Papa walking up to the house. "Papa!", I shouted. "My little juweel", he responded. Juweel means "gem" and it was the nickname he had been calling me since I was a baby. Mama walked outside with Masego and said, "You are just in time, I just finished making supper". "Ah perfect", said Papa, he sniffed the air," Bobotie I assume". "Bohtee bohtee", chanted Masego. We walked inside and saw Ugogo and Imanu seated at the table. Imanu is my older brother, he wants to go to school and be a pilot. "Hello Mama", Papa said to Ugogo. "And hello to you son", he said to Imanu. We silently said our thanks and began to eat supper. I bit into the juicy pork and sweet raisins in the Bobotie. After supper was finished I went to my clean mat and lay down. I thought about a lot of things before I trailed off to sleep. I thought about what I would do tomorrow and what would my life be like if I we were rich. Finally I fell asleep and dreamed about Bobotie.
When I woke up, I heard a loud rumble go through the house." What was that?", I thought to myself. I tiptoed to the window and peeked outside. There I saw about a dozen trucks. Big and green army trucks that rattle the ground even if just one is moving. I woke the rest of my family except Papa because he had already left for his long trip to the city. We all scrambled outside just like many other families ."Mama, mama whasthat?", asked Masego as he pulled on Mama's skirt. Mama just stood there wide-eyed and open-mouthed as she stared at the trucks. "I thought...", mumbled Imanu."What? What did you think", I asked Imanu."Oh nothing", he said. I was about to ask again when the door to one of the trucks opened and man stepped out. This wasn't any ordinary man though, he had a huge scar across his face and had white skin. I had only seen one other white-skinned person before and that was a while ago. The scar across the man's face caused one eye to clamp shut and one side of his mouth curve down a bit."Greetings", he said, "I have come to this village to secure the citizens and the town itself"."And how are you going to do that!", asked a man."Yah, what do you mean", shouted the townspeople."Silence, silence", he called out. "This town is in a dangerous area and we have come to transport you to a safer place. You will still be with your family and friends it will just require a days travel. We have come to transport you on the trucks and take you to the safe-haven let's call it"."We just need you to pack your things and gather your family members. Also, no one is allowed to exit the village in another way during the process". I saw a worried look cross my mother's face but only for a split second. She whispered to me,"He'll be alright". "Those who do leave the village in a separate way will be killed". Mama's expression changed from curiosity to pure bitterness and hate. She fell to the ground in a heap and didn't get up."Mama", soothed Imanu,"It will be alright. They don't know Papa left". A look of confusion swept the townsfolk as they all began to ask questions."Just go inside and pack your things", said the man, then we will seperate children on one bus and adults on the other". My family went into the house and did as we were told, afraid of the fate that would become of us if we didn't listen.
I packed my mat, my rose beads, and 6 dresses. Then I helped Masego pack his mat and many shirts and pants. My family walked outside and was led to the trucks."See you soon Abena", said Imanu as he gave me a hug. Ugogo patted my hand with a smile and walked into the truck. Mama had tears in her eyes and lectured me about taking care of Masego until we got to the new place. Then she kissed mine and Masego's forehead and got into the truck. Masego and I were led to another truck and got in. We had just gotten settled in when Masego began to cray for Enem, his doll. I told him to stay put as I ran back into the house and got Enem. I heard a deep rumble as I stepped out of the house."No!", I screamed as I chased after the truck carrying my belongings and my brother. I was running as fast as I ever had before and was so close to the back of the truck when I fell. I tumbled head over heels down a hill. The truck rumbled out of sight and around the corner of the hill."Nooooooooo!!!!!", I shouted. There were no other trucks left, it was just me and the village. I sat down and cried as I held Enem close to my heart.
