Chapter 28
Haunani P.O.V.
He forgot.
How could he forget? It's ma's anniversary and he forgot. Papa always said that if we forgot about ma, she'd be upset when we see her again in the sky. I sighed and rested my bum on the warm ground to rest my paws for a bit. I've been walking for a while now and I have no idea where I am going. Just then my tummy began to rumble and I placed my tiny paw on it.
"I really wish I had something to eat." I whispered to myself and then heard the sound of something small hitting the ground. My head shot up as did my ears and my green eyes landed on a plump field mouse. I smiled to myself before going into pouncing position, something I've learned while watching Tanabi hunting, and crawled up close to the mouse before I clamped my jaws into it and successfully killing it. I smiled to myself again and began to tear away at the tiny meal.
Once I finished I licked my lips and sighed. I'm all alone in this odd jungle like place.
"Might as well continue walking, there's nothing left for me back home. " I whispered and then got up and continued my endless walk to nowhere.
As I continued to walk I felt a bit dirty due to the mud on my paws and blood on my face. I groaned feeling my paws ache with every step I took.
'Maybe if I find a waterhole I could clean off there and rest for the night'. I thought as the stars came out to play. I lifted my nose into the air and picked up on the scent of water. I grinned and followed my nose until I finally came across a small waterhole looking thing.

Tanabi's P.O.V.
"Haunani!"I yelled into the night for what seemed like the one hundredth time. I perked up my ears but heard nothing, not even a squeak from the purple spotted cub.
"You're going to lose your voice before we find the child. Keep it down, we don't know what's out there. " Malka reprimanded with his chest puffed out and ears erect. He's a very masculine male, I've learned that he is one of Simba and Nala's friends as a cub including Tojo, Chumvi, Tama, and Kula.
"We will have to rest here for the night, Tojo and I have scouted the entire perimeter, we should be safe." Chumvi spoke coming from the tall grass with Tojo behind him.
"Rest? What do you mean rest? My son is still out there." Beba boomed looking older than ever before. The loss of his son has taken out the worst in him.
"Beba, we've been walking since early this morning. We must rest to have energy in the morning." Tojo explained while lying down on the dusty plains. Malka and Chumvi did the same as they rested next to Tojo.
"Maybe we can continue walking." I whispered to Beba catching both Kovu and Mheetu's attention. They nodded and rested their bodies on the ground along with Beba and I. When The Guards fall asleep we will continue our search.
"Psst, Tana! Psst!" I heard a tiny whisper call my name and for a second I could have sworn it was Haunani but reality is stronger than fantasy.
"MK? What are you doing here?" I asked in a harsh whisper causing my friends to turn their heads and glare at the small bat.
"Did you really think I was just going to stay home while my buddy is lost?" He asked while flapping his huge wings and landed in front of me while gasping for air.
"Actually, yes, that is exactly what I wanted you to do. MK, this isn't a game now go home before you end up getting hurt." I advised while shoving him with my paw only for him to rise into the air and land on my head.
"Listen, I am a part of this pride and I intend on helping whether you like it or not." He huffed and I sighed.
"Alright, fine. But if you slow us down-"
"I won't I promise, I'll be the eyes in the sky. I'm pretty sure none of you can see in the dark or see over the tall grass." MK said while raising a brow. I narrowed my eyes and snapped my jaws at him causing MK to tumble down my back.
"Don't confuse praise for license." I threatened then noticed The Royal Lion Guards were sound asleep. "Alright, come on." I whispered and dug my claws into the dirt to make my steps silent. Beba's claws are always unsheathed and he weighs two hundred-ninety pounds so his steps are always silent and unnoticed. Kovu, a trained killer, had already began his silent stalk with Mheetu following pursuit. I was in the very back making sure the three idiots in the center didn't wake up while we attempted to escape their orders. The flick of Tojo's tail made my steps stop and my heart rate to accelerate. Please don't wake up, please don't wake up. Tojo simply placed his paw over his face and snored loudly. I sighed with relief and let my head and ears fall. I then smiled and boldly ran from there with my four best friends at my side and one on my back.
Once we were far enough we slowed our pace and stuck our noses to the ground in attempt to get Haunani's scent.
"MK, do you think you can look ahead?" Beba asked a bit desperate. MK nodded then flapped his wings until he was out of sight in the starlit sky.
"I'm sure he didn't go far." Mheetu encouraged and for a moment I didn't see the playful idiot he once was but a strong lion. He looks like someone else and I think I can get used to this side of Mheetu.
"I'm going to admit something," Beba began "I am terrified of losing my son. I lost Shanira, I can't lose Haunani too." He sobbed silently while Mheetu placed his paw on his back and whispered silent things to our hurt friend.

Haunani's P.O.V.
I felt myself shiver as a cold breeze swept over me. I sighed and began to sniff the air again in hope that the scent of water would return. I stuck my nose up in the air and inhaled, filling my tiny lungs with oxygen. Thankfully the scent returned and I happily followed it as my claws clashed against the cool ground.
"Please, Mufasa, let there be a waterhole near by. I'm so thirsty. " I begged with my head hanging in shame. Maybe I did overreact, maybe my dad did know what today was but just didn't bring it up. But, I know my father and my father every year would take us to an oasis not far from where we once called home and we'd rest there for the night. I remember that those nights were always filled with the most stars, as if ma was in the sky watching over us.
"Oomph. " I groaned when my paw touched something wet, I then gasped when I realized that I stumbled upon a tiny pond. My tail began to wag from the excitement and I allowed my front paws to hit the water and I finally had my first taste of water in hours. When I finally finished lapping the water I licked my lips and gasped at my reflection. I looked so grotesque and tired. "I miss you so much, ma. I wish you didn't have to go. Please, if you're out there, help me. " I sobbed into the water allowing my tears to hit the clear water. I allowed my whole body to enter the pond and continued to cry. I'm cold, tired, alone, afraid, and hungry. Why did those hunters take my ma from me? Why? My ma was the kindest cheetah in the world with a voice like silk and hummed a soft tune to us every night before we went to bed. She was my ma and I loved her so much and I know she loved us. I sniffles a few times before I began to look around and find a nice place to rest for the night. The only thing I saw that looked comfortable was a tiny patch of grass that looked soft and warm. I sighed again and attempted to get up but felt like there was no point. I have nowhere to go.
"Haunani?" I heard a voice call and I felt my entire body stiffen. "Haunani, is that really you?" I sniffled and rubbed my arm with my paw before I turned and my eyes landed on someone I haven't seen in a very long time.
"M-ma?" I questioned feeling my eyes grow watery again.
"My baby, my beautiful baby, Nani. " My mothers voice squeaked and from the tall grass she was covered in she ran towards me and wrapped herself around my tiny body.
"I missed you so much. " I whispered and felt my warm tears land on her soft tanned fur. I can finally touch her again. Feel her warmth and see the king cheetah marking on her pelt, she always said that a cheetah's markings make them special because everyone's is different. She is the person who helped me embrace my mysterious purple spots.
"I know, baby, I know. My God look how you've grown, haha, your not a baby anymore." She wept into my as she held me close. After a few more seconds of just holding one another she released me and I couldn't help but stare into her unique light brown eyes. The same eyes that Muna possess and hurt me to see every time she blinked.
"How is this possible?" I asked once I got my thoughts in check.
"When the hunters came I made sure you and your siblings were safe. Your father and I tried so hard to steer them away from you three but when they kept getting closer and closer I had to drive them away for good. Then one night while you were all asleep I left but not before I said goodbye. That was the hardest thing I have ever done, to leave all of you. When I reached their resting place I attacked and they locked me in a cage for months with very little food and water. One night they left my cage open and I ran away from that place, I ran away to find you all. To be a family again. But, when I went back to our den..." She paused as tears streamed down her cheeks.
"It's okay ma, you're here now. " I said and licked her arm. She chuckled and bent her head and began to lick my head the way she always did then she stopped abruptly and looked at me dead in the eyes.
"What are you doing here? Where's your father and siblings?" She asked in a panic.
"I-I ran away. Today was your anniversary and pa didn't remember so I-I left. " I stammered.
"Oh, Haunani they must be worried sick and look at you you're covered in filth. " She reprimanded but she sighed and said "come on, let's get you someplace warm. " My ears turned upwards at the sound of the last word. Warm. God, I wish to be cuddled into my mothers warm fur while she hums me a soft tune.
My mother flicked her head to the side and I quickly followed after her long strides that was until I fell. My mother chuckled and picked my up by the scruff of my neck and together we made our way to my mothers den, somewhat.
"Here, you should be safe here. " My mothers sweet voice echoed throughout the warm den. She placed me down and my paws instantly felt better, the flooring was moss helping the throbbing of my tired paws to seize at last. I moaned with happiness causing my mother to chuckle. She then took a few steps and from a tiny bundle of moss she exposed a tiny thing of which I didn't know the name of.
"Wh-what is that?" I asked taking timid steps towards the odd thing resting in my mothers mouth. She placed it down and tilted it a bit creating a rainbow on the wall. I gasped at its beauty.
"You pick up a thing or two from humans. " She explained. "It helps me see at night. The moon isn't all that great. " I continued to study the odd human thing. "It's called a prism. " She told me and I repeated the name in my head. Prism. Yeah, I guess it makes sense.
"It's beautiful. " I commented and then walked over towards my mother and sat in between her long front legs. I felt her purr as she began to lick my head. I still couldn't believe it. She's been alive this whole time, looking for us.
"It is, but you must never go near humans. They are dangerous creatures, do you understand, my love?" She said as she stopped licking the top of my head.
"I understand mama. " I smiled causing her to do the same. Tears swelled up in her eyes allowing a few to fall.
"I've missed you, Haunani. " She whispered while resting her forehead against mine.
"I've missed you too. " I breathed feeling my voice crack. We remained in this position for a while until something fluttering made my ears twitch. "What was that?" I asked startled. My mother flicked her ears up and kicked the prism causing the pretty rainbow to disappear filling the cave with darkness of the night. I felt my ears flop down and so I cowered into my mother.
"It will be alright, my son." She assured in a whisper but I knew something was wrong. I'm no longer a stupid cub, I'm seven years old.
"Mama, I'm scared. " I mumbled.
"I know, I am too. But, I need you to be brave now, for the two of us. I want you to hide behind the moss and don't come out until I say. Alright?" I nodded and quickly ran behind the moss as my mother instructed. Before she existed the den, she rolled the prism over to me and muzzled into my purple spotted fur. I saw as she crouched down, her belly nearly touching the ground, her tail was down as well as her ears. Then she bellowed and ran out into the unknown with a start. I placed my paws in front of my lips so I wouldn't scream and reveal my hiding position.
"Ayodele! You nearly gave me a heart attack!" I heard my mother shriek and I let out the breath I was holding in. My mother and I are safe. "Come on out, Haunani, it was only my friend." I heard her say but I stayed hidden still a bit scared. This was a strange cheetah, what if she attacked me? "Come on, Haunani it's safe I promise. " I gulped and emerged from the moss and padded cautiously towards the opening of the den. When I finally came out I only saw my mother standing there. I furrowed my brows, where is the other cheetah?
"Hiya!" I voice said and a pair of crystal blue eyes appeared in front of me. I yelled with fright and ran towards my mother, hiding behind one of her legs. "Was it something I said?" I heard the odd female voice ask.
"Ayodele, I'd like you to meet one of my three children, Haunani. Haunani, this is my friend Ayodele. " My mother introduced but I was too scared to even move away from my mother.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you, honest. " Her voice was smoother and softer than my mothers. "Please, come out." She said in a sad voice. "You can't be afraid of little old me. " She chuckled and finally I mustered up the courage to peek my head and see not a cheetah but a pure white bat with the most beautiful pair of blue eyes I have ever seen.
"Why you-you're a bat!" I said happily causing her to laugh cheerfully and she carefully approached me waddling the same way MK did. MK! He would be alone anymore! Then I remembered I might never see them again. My father, my sister, my brother, Tanabi, the pride. Though the thought that I have lost them hurt, I was with my mother and I couldn't be happier.
"That I am, little one. " She said and she lightly licked my forehead. "Your mother had told me so much about you and your siblings. " She smiled then flapped her large wings and landed on my mothers head.
MK you're in for a world of a surprise.
"Really?" I asked wagging my tail and suddenly I felt a drop of water land on my nose.
"Oh dear, we'd better get inside we wouldn't want you to get sick. Come along. " My mother ushered us inside where the prism waited to be tilted and for its colors to shine the light on this marvelous occasion.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Tanabi's P.O.V.
"Curse this rain!" I yelled as the cold bullets hit my body. I furiously shook my body to rid it of the stupid water.
"Ugh! I can't fly in these conditio-agh!" I quickly caught MK as he fell from the sky. He landed safely on my back rather than the muddy ground we are currently walking on.
"Won't be long before The Guards find out about our leaving. " Mheetu grumbled as he shook his mane drenching Kovu. He groaned and stopped his movements.
"We have to find a place to shelter from this damned rain. " He reasoned while scoffing at our drenched figures. I bet we looked ridiculous.
"Beba? We'll keep looking as soon as the rain dies down, if that's alright with you?" I carefully asked not wanting to give him the idea that I don't care when I do.
"Yeah, I suppose so. " He mumbled and I felt my heart shatter. He's so empty, I know it. If we don't find Haunani soon I know it will destroy my friend.
"Don't worry, I bet he's someplace safe. " I assured him and head Beba sigh with sadness.
"I hope he is. " He said then began to walk again. I sighed and shook my fur again.
"Of all the nights for it to rain it had to rain tonight?" I grumbled a bit pissed off at our luck. "Thanks, Mufasa! I really appreciate it!" I yelled into the sky and suddenly a lightning bolt struck the ground with a loud thunder following soon after. "Very funny. " I mumbled and noticed that where the lightening struck there was a cave that looked deserted.
"Thank you! Mufasa, you are something else. " Mheetu said making me laugh. We picked up our pace and finally reached the cave and we sighed with content that it really was deserted.
"Here, this seems like the best place to rest. " I told Beba while I led him toward a moss bed.
"Thanks. " He mumbled then cuddled into the plush moss that held in the warmth of the earth. I heard MK mumble something under his breath so I turned my head and saw that he was cussing the world for getting his wings wet when he mostly needed them.
"It's alright, MK you've been doing well. " I assured and then I picked him up and placed him on the ground.
"I suppose, but I haven't seen Haunani so that means I'm not doing well enough. "He said with a pout. I was going to tell him that we were going to find him soon but Beba beat me to it.
"At least you're here and that means the world to me and I'm sure Haunani will be thrilled to see you when we find him. " He said with a sad tone in his voice. Beba sniffled and MK waddled over towards the sadden cheetah and rested his head on his paw.
"I remember the night I flew away, God I bet my mother cried. " He began. "I want thinking straight, so I flew back only to find our cave empty. They moved on, it's something us bats do. But not you guys, you guys are a pride. That's a stronger band than any dumb clan of selfish bats. We will find him Beba I fill it in my gut and you wanna know why?"
"Why?" Beba's voice cracked.
"Because a love between a father and son like yours and Haunani's comes once in a life time and I know that when we are near you will feel it not in your gut but in your heart. " That, my friends, were the wisest words I have ever heard come out of MK's tiny lips.
"Thank you. " Beba said then wrapped his spare paw around MK and hugged him while tears escaped his eyes and sobs rattled his body. Mheetu and Kovu were seated next to me and I couldn't help but allow the roar escape my being. It wasn't a happy roar, it was filled with agony and hurt. Mheetu followed after as did Kovu and the three of us filled the cave with our pained roars hoping, praying, that Haunani would hear us and maybe just maybe Mufasa would help us find him sooner.
After a while our roaring died down but the rain continued to pound against our plains.
"I remember the first time I met her, Shanira, she was so beautiful. " I heard Beba say and I instantly lied down knowing this story was going to be one I'd have to listen to intently. I felt Mheetu sit up straight but Kovu lied down next to me.
"We were five years old when we first crossed paths. She had-she had flowers tucked behind her ears. And I remember the way she laughed at me when I told her about if, she told me that her mother put them there because she felt like it was the day her daughter was going to meet her soulmate. I smiled at her and said it was a silly thing to think and she giggled God her giggle made my toddler self grow butterflies and my paws began to grow sweaty. We became friends that day and from that day on I loved her and was loved back. Then we got married when I turned seventeen and she only sixteen but we knew it was the right thing to do. We loved each other, and one the eve of our year anniversary she gave birth to our baby Haunani. I remember the tears in her eyes the way they sparkled as she looked at our child our creation. He was ours. Then when I was twenty-one and Shanira twenty we had our twins. We were so happy, I know Haunani was happy to be a big brother. Then, then the hunters came and-well we all know how that went. I didn't even notice when she'd gone when they took her. I'm twenty-seven years old now and I've lost both my wife and our first born son. I feel like I've lost so much in the little about of time I've been alive. God, I just wish I had my love back. " Beba sobbed as he finished his sad tale. MK had tears running down his cheeks, Kovu was balling, Mheetu had tears falling everywhere, and me? Well, let's just say I was a mess.
"We'll get your love back. " I assured with a sniffle.
"How? We're in the middle of nowhere and it's pouring outside. " Beba said with his voice covered in despair.
"I promised you that we would find your son and that is exactly what I intend on doing. We will search for him until we have covered all of Africa if we have to! But we will never give up the search for your son. " Beba gave me a soft smile before he stretched his heavily spotted arm towards me and I carefully rubbed my forehead against his own while his arm wrapped around me in a caring way.
"Thanks you, brother, thank you. "

Haunani's P.O.V.
After we ran inside the ran began to pour harder and harder but thankfully we were inside where it was warm and dry. When I entered I saw that my mother and Ayodele were searching for something. I figured it would be the prism to I scurried over towards the moss bush, took the prism into my lips, and walked back to the same position my mother had first shown me it. I placed it there and tilted it causing the rainbow to appear once more. I smiled to myself quite happily.
"Well don't, my son. " My mother said and then she lied down on the soft moss flooring. Ayodele jumped off of her head and walked over towards me.
"He is so much like you, Shanira. " She whispered as she places her lips on my forehead and pecked it lightly.
"If you think I do, you should meet my little sister Muna. She even has my mothers eyes. " I said with a smile remembering my little sister and brother. I wonder if they miss me, if they even noticed I left. Most likely no one from the pride has realized that I've gone. I shook my head and looked down at the beautiful bat in front of me.
"I'm sure I will, once we get you back home in the morning. " I furrowed my brows. Did my mother want me to leave already? I don't wanna go back! I want to stay here and be happy with my mother and Ayodele.
"Do you not want me here?" I asked in a sad voice while looking over at my mother.
"Of course I do, you're my son. I haven't seen you since you were four, I love you Haunani. But, I can't just keep you here with your father thinking the worst of your whereabouts. " She explained causing my head to fall. I didn't want to go back to a pride with so many different people and problems. My mother then crawled over to my side and began to lick behind me ears. Ayodele sat in front of my while wrapping her wings around herself.
"I don't want to go back. I bet no one from the pride has noticed I've gone. " My mother stopped licking me causing me to look up at her. My mothers brows were furrowed and her brown eyes, the same ones that Muna possess, looking down at me filled with confusion.
"Cheetahs don't travel in prides, love. "
"I know but dad found a lion in the gorge, he was confused and hurt. So he was allowed into our den. The lions name is Tanabi, he's amazing. He isn't like all the other lions that we've come across. He was kind and gentle. Then came Mheetu he's a jokester, he's always playing and messing around even though he's grown all of his mane. Shanni is his soul mates name. She's awfully beautiful, with cool eyes. One is red and the other is blue. She's sassy and funny but she tells the best stories. We found out that she and Vitani are sisters. But, Vitani and her and completely different. Vitani is sometimes rude and sarcastic but at night, when everyone's asleep, she licks behind my ears and wishes us sweet dreams. She's Tanabi's soulmate. Then theirs MK, he's a goofy guy, he's always insulting Tanabi but we all know that they're close friends. He's a weird bat. " I finished and felt something in my heart.
"A-another bat?" Ayodele blushed while looking up at me.
"Yeah, he's a bit odd but once you get to know him he's great. He's a great buddy. " I yawned and cuddled further into my mothers fur.
"It sounds like you really love them. " I heard Ayodele whisper as she crawled onto my back and lied there.
"Uh huh, they're family. Tanabi taught me that love isn't just about blood it's about the love. " I explained.
"Then I'm sure they're out there in the rain looking for you right now. " My mother said, I could fee, the vibration from her soft voice since I was so close to her.
"Now that I'm talking about them..I miss them mama, I really do. " I weeped silently. God I missed them, I missed them so much. I wish I hadn't left, I bet papa is worried sick! And Tanabi is most likely mad for not being there for me! Ugh, what have I done!
"It's alright my son, we will go look for your father now if you'd like. " I heard my mother say in her soft voice.
"Please, I need to apologize. I've been so stupid. "
"Don't say such a thing, if you hadn't runaway I wouldn't be holding you right now. Sure what you did was silly but you found me. Now, come on we've got to go find your father before he assumes the worst. " My mother quickly got up and helped me to my feet with Ayodele clinging onto me the way MK does. MK...oh how I wish to see those big orange eyes of his.
"Don't you worry little one we'll find them. " She assured while patting my back with her long claw. I nodded my head and sniffled. I hope she's right
Once we reached the entrance of the den my mother stopped abruptly causing me to hit her hind leg and Ayodele to smack her snout against my shoulder blade.
"Are you alright, Del?" I asked a bit worried.
"Yes, I'm alright. But, Shanira are you?" I looked up at my mother and saw that her ears were erect and her pupils were rather large. Something is wrong. The tip of my mothers tail twitched and I knew then that something was near.
"Nani, try to contain your heart rate and Ayodele quite breathing so heavily. I need you to be quiet now. " My mother said in a stern voice causing my ears to flick backwards and my body to crouch. If I must be quiet I must be near to the ground with my claws digging into the dirt. I learned that from Tanabi. Suddenly I heard my mother growl and a shriek was heard.
"MK?" I thought out loud.
"Haunani!" I heard my dear friend call and I felt tears reemerge. I quickly got up and ran outside to see that my mother had pinned my poor friend down.
"No! No ma that's my friend MK!" I yelled and my mother quickly got off of him and MK flew up and wrapped his large dark purple wings around my neck.
"Oh, I missed you so much! I knew we'd find you! Don't you ever runaway again!" He reprimanded while hugging me tightly.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." I whispered back and held him with one of my paws. MK then released me and fluttered to the ground.
"MK, I'd like for you to meet my-my mother. " MK turned his head and his jaw dropped when they landed on my beautiful mother.
"It's very nice to meet you, MK. " My mother said while taking timid steps towards the small bat.
"But I thought-Beba said-you're-huh?"
"Yes, I'm very much alive. " She chuckled and then leaned down to quickly lick his cheek.
"How?" MK asked a bit surprised.
"With my help. " I heard Ayodele say from the top of my head. MK turned to see who the voice belonged to his jaw dropped once more. "Hello. " Ayodele chirped and I already knew her cheeks were red.
"H-hello. " MK said with a rather red face.
"You must be MK. " She said and right when MK opened his mouth to say yes another voice was heard.
"Shanira?" My fathers figure was there, his fur wet from the rain that had finally stopped.
"Beba. " My mother whispered and then they raced towards each other and wrapped their necks around one another. My mother was sobbing as well as my father.
"I can't believe it's really you. " My father whispered.
"I'm here, my love, I'm here I'm not going anywhere. " My mother said back and then they parted.
"Papa!" I yelled running towards him, crashing my body onto his.
"Oh, Nani, my son. Thank Mufasa you're alive, that you both are. " My father held me as my mother pressed her forehead against his and I giggled happily.
"We can be a family again. " I said with a smile causing them to laugh happily.
"That's right, Nani, a family of love. " My father said with more tears running down his face.
