Their feet walked along smooth stone bricks that complimented the rough appearance of the tunnel. Metal beams encompass them, being held by darker beams along the ceiling. Hard lights are placed unevenly, shining into their eyes as they make their way through the endless path. Countless citizens walk multiple feet above them, unaware that two of their people are making an escape. Fear struck Tyler's veins when he thought about leaving his hometown. He'd never made a decision as life-troubling as this one. Thoughts raced throughout his mind, some full of doubt, alertness, and paranoia, but he focused on the feeling of impatience. To see Josh, to be safe from the bishops, to make a home somewhere new.
Evelyn's shoulders began to sag from the weight her bag had on her. She noticed the sensation of her feet pinching with each step like she had been walking on rocks.
"How much longer?"
Tyler shakes his head, keeping his gaze down. "I don't know." He watched the stone bricks below his feet fly by with each passing second until he met a white line. His body halts, unable to move, as he knows what this means. His feet stand on the line. "We're outside the perimeter of the city. There's no turning back now."
"Do you regret this?"
Tyler shakes his head and meets Evelyn's gaze. "I can't fight this time now."
"Come on. Let's continue."
The dreadful walk ends as they notice a dim light coming from the end of the tunnel. Their bodies suddenly perk up and exhaustion leaves their frail limbs.
"We're here!" Evelyn marvels.
"Not quite. But we're closer."
Their shoes land on dirt as they finish through the tunnel. The icy wind hit them again, but this time colder. The wind was more stale and had an awful odor. Black smoke roamed the flat cement ground of the endless land. Tyler took a few minutes in to admire the difference in the atmosphere. He hated change, but the dystopia of the perimeter was carved into some place in his heart.
Tyler sparks his lighter and gives both their torches a flame.
"What's the next step?" Evelyn asks.
With determination, Tyler pulls his bandana onto his nose to block out any harmful gas. "Finding a base for a landmark."
