The Lights

He woke up at the crack of dawn. The earlier, the better, his mother had said. But even with all her wisdom, she had been consumed by the lights, like everyone he loved.

The little boy ran out to the streets as quickly as he could. Rubble and bodies lay everywhere, but he ran. If he could run to the standing house, he would be safe. A loud siren rung in the air, like a monster announcing its call before the strike.

The boy looked up at the approaching lights, the missiles, full of defeat.

He should have woken earlier.

This story is a work of fiction and alludes to no one and nothing. However, it has taken inspiration from current world affairs, and more specifically the line from the prompt: "Some might even argue we're living in a dystopian society right now."
