Chapter 4: The Stowaway

Bells were ringing, and screeches were no longer heard. It seems that Emerald has managed to distract the Heartwarms away from the manor, but there's no turning back... Jensen could still be in trouble, but they're in the spirit realm. And from what Maroon knows, there's really no way of getting into that realm without magic.

And magic is what Maroon doesn't have, but he can't leave his siblings behind like that, even if they're dead. It seems like they can't pass through to the other worlds. Maroon wasn't much of a person who knew a lot about religion, but he did here stories of Yaramae, who caused chaos across the world and corrupted it with dark magic.

However, it's been over a thousand years and for sure things haven't changed, but then... Maroon wasn't allowed outside the city. Now though, he's free. He can go wherever he pleases.

Asong as the Whitewaters are dead. Maybe the The Ring will discover their dead bodies, but what if they suspect that Maroon was the killer and an invisible beast wouldn't be enough evidence to prove his Innocence, he must leave the city while he can. Take a ship out or something. Perhaps being a stowaway would work?

It was worth the shot anyhow.

He wasn't too far from the docks. Within the Magician's Circle, a river as large as you can imagine flowed through the city, and thanks to magic, it's easy to contain and ships come and go daily.

In the distance, shouting can be heard and loud noises. More bells as the ships are signalling their comings and goings. Maroons small legs carried him as fast as they could, he reached the docks, and hid behind some barrles and crates. Catching his breath, waiting for the right moment to board the ship. There was an elderly man, with a parrot on his shoulder. The parrot had a brilliant red color for the base, and it contained mixed colors of yellow and green. His beak jutting out and slightly curved.

The elderly man had a wooden plank in replace of his left foot, and hobbled across the lowered ramp. Clunking against the aged wood as he walks upwards. Some men were younger, and had slicked black hair and others had brown hair. Some blonde even. The elderly man with the bird seemed to be the captain, and he seemed to be heading towards his quarters.

No one was watching for stowaways either. There was a sheet covering some crates and barrels in the corner of the boat. If he was lucky he could find some food in them to last Maroon awhile, but he had to make sure that he would be safe there.

Maroon sneaked onto the ramp, it creaked as he did so, but the voices of the other men and the roaring of the seas below, deafened the creaking. Maroon took shelter behind a set of barrels, just avoiding a glance back from one of the pirates who were getting ready to load up more crates. Maroon sneaked over to the covered crates and barrels. He climbed into an open crate. Waiting as the boat set sail.

The smell of fish and onions burning his nostrils as he hid from sight. Unsure of what these guys would do if they find a stowaway, and perhaps he was taking too big of a risk.

They could kill him if they reacted the wrong way. Or maybe they could be generous enough to let him on the ship in exchange of doing work or something. For sure, life as a sailor was probably different than being tortured and kept in a dark room for ten years. Without much of a social life...

For now. Maroon will hide out here and make sure that he'll be fine. Maybe sneak out during the middle of the night for food or something.

Boots clunked against the wood, and it creaked as a man was walking across it. Maroon listened closely, but dared not to move as he could give away his position.

Another set of boots clunked over, and the voices of sailors and dock loaders in the background have been muffled, but when Maroon tuned into these two men that confronted each other. Maroon really wanted to listen.

"So is everything set for tomorrow?" The first voice asked.

"Yes everything's all set. We'll be sailing to Siren's Calling in no time." The second one said.

"That's all I wanted to hear." The boots departed and Maroon was left alone with nothing, but the sounds of sailors and the roaring sea. It wasn't until a few hours later for the calls of setting the sail to leave the docks came around that caused Maroon to feel anxious and scared.
