Chapter 3: Target Acquired

-Gabriel-

I expected to find her, and I did but what I didn't expect, was for her to find me. I had to sneak into the building at the sound of school bell to avoid detection. Once inside, I followed Crane's map to find Crane another test subject. It wasn't too hard to find the younger children, due to the sound difference in the kids it was easy to find the younger ones. I quickly found out through the map that the higher grade level children were on the second floor, while the younger graded children were on the first floor. I remember Crane asking for a child that was younger than usual, so that meant for me to stick to the first floor. I followed the map until it lead me to the first kindergarten classroom. I pull out my gun and go to knock on the door, but am stopped by the door opening for me. I feel a small figure bump into my legs and I did the polite thing and caught the child before they fell. I remember feeling my eyes widening at the child I was holding in my hand. It was the girl I wanted to search for in the school.

I was flabbergasted and found myself lifting her up higher to meet my gaze. As I stared into her crystal blue eyes, I found innocence, purity, and helplessness behind them, but there seemed to be something else hidden among them. Curious as to why she was trying to leave in such a hurry, I look behind her to see a bruised and bloody girl hiding behind a chair in the back of the classroom. I feel my eyebrows raise in question to this as I look back to the child in my hands to find her own hands bloody and bruised. Then everything clicked into place, "She started a fist fight and won." I realize. Slowly I feel a smile form on my face which makes the child shake in fear in my arms. "You're even more interesting than I thought. He will definitely like you." I chuckle.

Here I was thinking that capturing this little girl would be a piece of cake, boy was I wrong. She ended up breaking my nose, setting off the alarm, saving her classmates, biting my right hand, and finally clawing my arms to shreds before falling to unconsciousness. She was a true warrior at heart, I'll give her that. Even though she lost the fight, she won my respect and the spot for being Crane's next test subject. "Finally," I sigh as I released her from my hold, "I thought she'd never give up." Slowly, I pick up the unconscious child bridle style and stand to my feet.

As I began to make my escape to the back door, the police arrive with their sirens blaring and the other teachers outside, somehow developed the courage to start attempting to break into the classroom through the front door. "Time to go." I thought as I pull my gun back out. I put the girl over my left shoulder and open fire on the classroom door. Screams of pain and fear fill the hallways as I fired. A sinister smile creeps across my face at the sight of a bloody hand smearing across the classroom's window. "I forget how much I love the sight of blood." I chuckle to myself. Knowing that walking out the front or back door were no longer an option, I decide to create a distraction. I quickly pull out my lighter and start the bean bags on fire as well as any other cloth like items. With the fire now raging throughout the classroom, I didn't have to worry about my blood/DNA getting discovered or the fight that took place in this room. With my job done, I jump out a nearby window with the girl still in my arms.

Thank God that the classroom was only on the first floor, otherwise we'd have a problem. I land in the bushes with a crunch, and sprint into the woods with the child like a madman. Once I reached the safety of the woods, I hide in the bushes with the child and check my current situation. Surprisingly nobody spotted us in the long run. If anything, everyone else was too busy concerned about the smoke coming from the classroom. "Good, as long as they are distracted, I can escape." I sigh in relief as I put my gun away. As the firefighters arrived on the scene, I stand to my feet with the child in my arms, and begin to make my way back to the cabin.

I travel a half a mile in pure silence with the child before I felt my phone begin to vibrate at a steady beat. "It's probably Crane." I sigh, "I better answer it." I make sure to check my surroundings before laying the girl down underneath a shaded pine tree. I watch her as she stirred in her sleep to the sudden moment and curl up more after I had laid her down. "She looks so peaceful as she sleeps, I wish I could sleep like that." I thought as I pulled out my phone. My phone's screen lights up and I see that Crane was trying to contact me via face-time, "He must want to see the kid." I sigh. I answer the phone and Crane's face appears on my smart phone. " Whoa Gabriel! What happened to your face? Crane asks. I laugh at his first comment, "Let's just say a certain new test subject of yours put up more of a fight than I thought." Dr. Crane chuckles at my remark. "So how'd you find out I finished the job?" I ask.

"I overheard the news about your attack on the TV while I was working. The reporters are making it sound like you started a fire." Crane laughs. "Well, you heard right. I lit the classroom on fire to cover my tracks." I reply with a sinister smile. "Now why would you do that?" Crane asks with curiosity. "Well as he saw from my face, I left a bit of blood back at the crime scene, and I needed a distraction in order to escape. Burning the classroom seemed like a solution to both of my problems." I reply with honesty. "Seems logical, so tell me, who caused that mess to your face?" Crane asks with a smile. "Here, let me show you." I answer as I walk back over to the girl. I set down my cell phone next to the tree so Crane could get a good of her. "I actually don't know her name, but I bet we'll know it soon." I explain while turning her around to show Crane. "Why did you pick her out of all the other students?" Crane asks as he examined her. "In a way, I guess she reminds me of myself. She's defiant and brave and I underestimated her. Personally, I don't think any of the other children expected her to be fighter as well." I sigh as I set the girl back down. "What do you mean by that?" Crane asks surprised.

"Well first off, she broke my nose." I explain, "Second, she activated the fire alarm to alert authorities and third, she sacrificed herself to save her classmates. If anything, she was more concerned about her classmates than herself." "That would explain why she has a few fresh bruises. How did your little fight end?" Crane asks as he finishes his examination. "I ended up pinning her against the wall just to sedate her, she's a feisty kid." I chuckle as I grabbed my phone off of the ground. Crane chuckles with me at my answer. "Well, to honest, I cannot wait to meet her. How far are you from the cabin?" Crane asks. I turn my attention away from the child, and look around. "About a mile and a half, shouldn't be too long." I reply as I checked my GPS and surroundings. "Okay, I'll keep in touch until you arrive." Crane replies. "Fine by me." I sigh as I hang up. Crane's face disappears back into my phone as I hung up. "Time to get moving." I sigh to myself as I put my phone back into my pocket.

-Katrina-

I woke up to find myself in the woods under a shady tree without Mabel. I hug myself tight as tears stung my eyes, I was on my own now. "I need to be strong." I command myself, "Don't be a baby." As I sat up with my new found courage, I grab my chest in pain. It felt like my lungs were on fire. "How did I get here?" I thought while coughing. "You're awake." I hear a familiar voice say as footsteps approached me. Slowly, I lift my head up to meet the stranger's emerald eyes with my crystal blue eyes. The voice belongs to a man I had recently met, the man was the intruder who I fought back at school. "Aw what's wrong? You look like you're scared." The stranger finishes with a smile. My body screams at me to run, but I don't. Instead, I stand my ground and continue to stare the man in the eyes with anger. I'll admit, I am scared of him, but I was not going to show him any fear. I am going to remain strong and stand my ground. My kidnapper puts his hands on his hips and chuckles at my bravery.

"You know, you were suppose to stay asleep, you weren't suppose to wake up yet." My kidnapper snickers as he couches down to my level. I remain silent and continue to stare. "Are you mute?" The man asks with curiosity. I break the eye contact and hesitate before I respond by shaking me head in a "no" form. "So why don't you speak?" The man asks. I simply shrug and roll my eyes, how long was it going to take before he realizes that I didn't want to talk. The man sighs and sits down in front of me, and goes into a deep thought, before smiling, "I cannot allow you to stay awake, I need you to go back to sleep, would you like the cloth again?" Anger flashes across my eyes and the man sees it as I stick my tongue out at him. The man chuckles at my defiance before slapping me across the face. The slap stings my left cheek and catches me off guard. "That wasn't very nice deary." The man seethes.

While I am stunned, the man grabs me by my throat and pins me to the tree. Terrified and angry, I start to claw at the man's arms once again and start to draw blood. The man growls in anger and tightens his grip forcing me to stop. Hot tears escape my eyes and stream down my face as my body begins to go limp, I never felt so helpless. "What's wrong? Having trouble breathing?" My kidnapper laughs. I choke in response to his question which makes him laugh more. I feel the man's hands around my neck tighten even more as his laughter turn into an insane sadistic one. His laugh echos throughout my mind as I began to slip back into an unconscious state without Mabel at my side to comfort me.

-Crane-

When Gabriel told me that he "shouldn't be long", I expected him to take his time. Which he did, but it was shorter than I anticipated. I was working at my lab table with the fear toxin components, when the sound of the front door being kicked open, alerts me. I carefully set the chemicals down on the table and pull out my gun from my lab coat. I hear a pair of heavy footsteps enter the cabin as I slip behind the cover of a nearby wall. "Crane? You here?" A familiar voice echos. "Gabriel? Is that you?" I ask. "Yeah, it's me." Gabriel replies. I sigh in frustration and put my gun back in my coat pocket."Why on Earth, did you kick the door open?!" I demand as I leave my hiding spot. "I could have shot you!" I yell while I made my way over to the front door. "I'm sorry! Look, I had my hands full and I couldn't open the door. I had no other choice!" Gabriel yells back.

As I approach Gabriel, I could see why he had kicked the door open. Gabriel's arms were full, both of his arms held a sleeping little girl. "She looks so peaceful, its like nothing ever happened." I thought. "She's my challenge huh? She looks pretty innocent to me." I said with a smile. Gabriel laughs, "Innocent?! She's a tough cookie, she's far from being innocent." "Really? Here give her to me, I want to take a look at her. " I ask while reaching for her. "Fine by me, here take the brat." Gabriel replies while giving me the child.

She squirms to the feeling of moment as Gabriel gives her to me. In my arms, she finches to the change, but slowly she calms down and snuggles into my lab coat as if I was a teddy bear. "Interesting, her body language is giving off the signs of distress with Gabriel. I wonder why." I thought with sarcasm. I carefully carry the girl over to the lab table and set her down in the testing chair, while Gabriel went over to the couch to take a nap. As I sat the child down, she groans in her sleep and now snuggles into the chair. "She seems to seeking for sense of comfort." I write down in her file. As I continue to watch her body language, she turns away from me, which forces me to stop working and turn her around.

I carefully roll her over in the chair to face me, and luckily for me, she stays asleep and doesn't resist the change in her sleeping position. I quickly take notice during my examination, the fresh bruises on her arms and the hand marks around her neck. The sight sends chills down my spine. "Damn it Gabriel." I curse while writing down those notes in the girl's file. Frustrated at Gabriel, I slam my fist down on the lab table, to which, Gabriel reacts by jumping up from the couch terrified from my outburst. He had his gun drawn and it was aimed at me. "Gabriel, its okay. I'm just a bit upset." I said calmly. Gabriel is reluctant to put his gun away, but he puts it away anyway. I hear him sigh heavily and begin to pace. "My outburst really did startle him, I must have activated his PTSD." I chuckle to myself.

"What set you off?" Gabriel asks. I sigh again and motion to him to come over. Gabriel obeys and joins me at my side in front of the girl. "These marks on her neck and these bruises on her arms were your doing, weren't they?" I ask. Gabriel remains silent and continues to stare at the marks on the child's body. "Gabriel, you've never done this to any other of my subjects. Why did you hurt her out of all the others?" I ask with curiosity. "She woke up after I hung up with you over the phone, she was being defiant and I knew that if I tired to continue on with her awake, she'd try to alert the police. Look, I had no other choice. It was my only option. I bet that if you were in my shoes you'd do the same." Gabriel replies. "So you choked her out instead of using the back-up sedative I gave you?" I demand. Gabriel is hesitant to answer, but nods his head in shame after a few seconds.

"Well, you did what you had to." I sigh. "Now please get some rest, but before you do, please take the girl down to the basement and chain her to the wall. We don't want to have another subject escape from us again do we?" I ask. Gabriel shook his head. "Good, now go." I command. Gabriel nods and picks up the girl in his arms. She tenses to his touch and an upset groan escapes from her lips. "Oh, wait a minute. I almost forgot something." I realize as I ran back to my lab. Gabriel stops going to basement and allows me to approach the child when I return. I pull a syringe out of my lab coat and and insert it into the girl's right shoulder. The girl lets out another upset groan and her left arm reaches out to claw at me. A sinister smile forms over my face at the girl's attitude and bravery."I like this girl already." I chuckle to myself silently.

"What did you inject her with?" Gabriel asks. "A tracker." I reply as I removed the syringe from her arm. "A tracker? What didn't the other subjects receive one?" Gabriel asks with anger lacing his voice. "While you were gone, the idea came to mind. I also took the liberty to chip the others as well while you were gone, so don't worry about it." I reply. "So what tracks them?" Gabriel asks. I sigh and pull out a small mobile device from my lab coat, and turn it on to show him. The screen flickers to life and shows three red dots that beep to the subject's heart rates. "Smart." Gabriel smiles. "Thank you, and don't worry, I made you one as well. It's in your room when you want it." I reply while putting my device away. Gabriel gives me a nod as he brought down the girl down the stairs to basement. I follow to the edge of the stairs to make an announcement to the two other children. "Subjects four and five, I'd like you to meet your replacement for subject two. Meet subject six." I holler downstairs.
