Duty
My allegiance
Is not to leaders,
Not to gods,
Not to nations,
But to life.
Keep your lectures on honor.
Your prattling
Tomes on patriotism.
Do not speak such words
If by them you mean
Sacrificing lives for
The profits of a few.
By which you mean
Killing, preferably,
"Other" peoples,
Any whom you
Choose to bomb,
And grow rich
Replenishing
Spend munitions.
Direct your corrupt and
Idle words
To whose who still
Grow ears for them.
Do not shout in mine.
These are my conditions:
I will not live by
Empty assemblages of words.
I will not bow to liars,
As though untutored.
I will not be spiritually neutered.
I hear your false speeches,
I can't take them seriously.
Rather, I attend
What pure hearts know,
Not what the evill
Would convince us of,
That there are any higher truths
Than Love.
You presidents and kings,
You poets of the flag,
You wordsmiths of "duty,"
I watch you vomit propaganda,
I witness the gift of language
Degraded, used,
Brutalized.
You are little
In my eyes.
