Tolkien's Realism

You say Tolkien doesn't kill his Characters at all,
But in The Silmarillion we see many of them fall,
Like the Noldor king Finrond, who answered Beren's call,
Or even King Fingolfin who fell before Morgoth's wall.

In the Children of Hurin, many are laid to waste,
Like the maiden Nienor who ends herself with haste,
Because being with her brother was a bit outside her taste,
Jumping off a cliff to end her life in vast disgrace.

In Lord Of The Rings, we see Boromir perish,
Along with Gandalf, a Character who I cherish,
The death of Theoden made the story nightmarish,
But in the End good won, Sauron didn't vanquish.

So yes, that which was good often won the day,
But not without some casualties along the way,
It was bound to happen with good and evil in the fray,
But Tolkien chose to make it so that his novels ended gay.(merry)
