September 18, 882 (5 days 'till ball)
The picture at the top is the basic design for her every day dress. I will add the details eventually and hopefully make it with the help of my family members that know how.
Dear Diary, I was definitely NOT expecting what I found when I went downstairs yesterday. In addition to the dressmaker, BOTH princes were there. Yes, I am serious. When I walked downstairs both Prince Henry AND Prince James were in the sitting room using our good chairs, being served tea by an understandably nervous maid. When I reached the bottom of the stairs, they looked up and, upon seeing me, put down their tea, stood up, and walked over to where I stood by the doorway in shock. As they approached I regained my senses and curtsied to them deeply, just like I had been taught.
"Oh straighten up will you. All these formalities are so tedious," I heard one voice say, before feeling a gentle hand place upon my shoulder.
"Besides, soon we will be family," said another voice gently, while the hand guided me into an upright position. When I looked up, what I saw was Prince James with a scowl on his face, and Prince Henry with a gentle smile and his hand on my shoulder.
I froze. "G-g-good afternoon, Y-y-y-your H-h-highnesses." From this point on, I will refer to them by just their first names, as per their later request. Here is the conversation that follows:
Henry: "You do not have to be so nervous. We will not bite."
James: "Your hand is still on her shoulder." At that point James rolled his eyes and Henry quickly removed his hand, looking overly apologetic.
Henry: "I am so sorry. I did not mean to make you feel uncomfortable."
Me: "It was not just your fault Highness. I just was unsure how to react to your unexpected, but very lovely I assure Your Royal Highnesses, visit to our humble home or the fact that you would honor me, the daughter of the least powerful of all the nobles in the kingdom, with the chance to not only talk to you, but also to have the great honor of becoming the spouse of such an honorable man as yourself, Prince James."
James: He rolled his eyes and spoke to James. "Told you! She is just as selfish as all the others. We should have stuck wit the first one. They might both be kiss-ups, but at least SHE could afford her own dress."
Henry: "Uh ... better watch it or the gossips will have a field day about how 'the prince's fiancé broke the engagement because she did not like him enough to even pretend, even though she was the daughter of the poorest and lowest ranked noble in the kingdom.' Hahaha!" At that point I was really starting to get mad. I knew that everything that Henry said was true, but after what James had said I was not really in the mood.
Me: "I may be poor, but I am NOT a kiss-up." They both stared at me open mouthed. Henry looked like he was about to say something, but I did not give him a chance. "I was only trying to be polite, but I guess I was wrong! Good luck finding a fiancé after I tell the town gossips and write a few letters. Not even the lowest peasant will marry you then. All that is left will be those selfish kiss-ups who would do anything for money and power, and even they will not be quite as eager because, even though my rank is not high, my opinion is well respected because of my honesty."
They just stared at me, then I noticed my family watching us wide-eyed. The Royal Dressmaker sat in the corner, trembling. That's when I realized what I had done. I started to slowly back towards the stairs, but before I could turn around and run up them, someone grabbed my arm and held it tight.
Henry: "Woah! That was intense!"
I turned around slowly and saw everybody wide-eyed with a stunned expression, watching me. No, not me. My arm, or more accurately, the hand on my arm. I looked up at the person holding my arm and gasped.
Temporary cliff hanger while I type up more.
