---------------------------------
CHICAGO POLICE DEPARTMENT
HOMICIDE DIVISION
REPORT FILE #1947-0407
---------------------------------
Date: April 7th, 1947
Time: 17:58 PM
Case Details: Kensington Avenue Homicide
Case Number: 1947-0407-H
Assigned Detectives:
Detective Adam Cole (Lead Investigator)
Detective Margaret Dawson (Partner)
Date of Incident: April 7, 1947
Time of Discovery: Approximately 6:00 AM
Location of Incident: Alley off Kensington Avenue, between Briarwood Street and Union Place.
VICTIM DESCRIPTION (JANE DOE):
· SEX: Female
· AGE: Estimated late 20s to early 30s
· HEIGHT: Approximately 5'6"
· BUILD: Slender
· HAIR: Long, golden blond, slightly unkempt at the time of discovery
· EYES: Blue (open at the time of discovery, expression fixed in apparent fear)
· CLOTHING: Bright red dress, high-quality fabric, likely worn for a formal occasion. Signs of dirt stains, particularly on the back and faintly on the front, consistent with being dragged.
· SHOES: Red heels, scuffed and dirt-covered, consistent with the rough terrain of the alley.
· JEWELRY: None present.
· DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: None visible at the time of discovery.
CONDITION OF THE BODY
· CAUSE OF DEATH (PRELIMINARY): Gunshot wounds.
o TWO ENTRY WOUNDS IN THE BACK, CLOSELY GROUPED, CONSISTENT WITH SMALL-CALIBER ROUNDS.
o ONE ENTRY WOUND TO THE FOREHEAD, PRECISE AND FATAL.
o CORRESPONDING EXIT WOUNDS IN THE CHEST AND BACK.
o NO SIGNS OF STRANGULATION OR OTHER EXTERNAL INJURIES BEYOND THOSE CAUSED BY DRAGGING.
· STATE OF THE BODY:
o Pale, indicative of postmortem blood loss.
o Dirt under the victim's fingernails suggests attempts to crawl.
CRIME SCENE OBSERVATIONS:
· BODY FOUND NEAR A LARGE RUBBISH BIN IN THE ALLEY.
· POSITIONING OF THE BODY AND LACK OF PERSONAL IDENTIFICATION SUGGEST STAGING TO APPEAR AS A ROBBERY GONE WRONG.
· PURSE CONTENTS (LIPSTICK, COMPACT MIRROR, SMALL AMOUNT OF CASH) SCATTERED NEARBY, BUT NO ID OR JEWELRY PRESENT.
· FRESH DRAG MARKS VISIBLE, STARTING FURTHER INTO THE ALLEY AND LEADING TO THE BODY'S LOCATION.
· DIRT ON THE DRESS DOES NOT MATCH THE DARKER, COMPACT DIRT OF KENSINGTON AVENUE, INDICATING THE BODY WAS MOVED FROM ANOTHER LOCATION.
ADDITIONAL EVIDENCE:
· FAINT TIRE TRACKS LOCATED AT THE OPPOSITE END OF THE ALLEY, INCONSISTENT WITH GARBAGE TRUCKS OR POLICE VEHICLES. TRACKS SUGGEST A SMALLER VEHICLE MAY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED.
· NO SHELL CASINGS OR OTHER TRACE EVIDENCE RECOVERED FROM THE IMMEDIATE SCENE.
WITNESS STATEMENTS:
· GARBAGE COLLECTORS: TWO MEN DISCOVERED THE BODY DURING THEIR ROUTINE MORNING ROUTE. BOTH APPEARED SHAKEN BUT COULD NOT PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. THEY STATED THEY ENTERED THE ALLEY FROM THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION AND DID NOT APPROACH THE AREA WHERE TIRE TRACKS WERE FOUND.
· LOCAL SHOPKEEPERS: QUESTIONED BY OFFICERS; NONE REPORTED HEARING GUNSHOTS, SCREAMS, OR UNUSUAL DISTURBANCES DURING THE NIGHT.
PRELIMINARY THEORIES:
· VICTIM MAY HAVE BEEN KILLED ELSEWHERE AND TRANSPORTED TO KENSINGTON AVENUE.
· STAGING SUGGESTS A CALCULATED ATTEMPT TO MISDIRECT INVESTIGATORS.
· LACK OF ID AND PERSONAL ITEMS INDICATES PREMEDITATION.
NEXT STEPS:
1. AWAIT CORONER'S AUTOPSY REPORT FOR PRECISE TIME AND CAUSE OF DEATH.
2. AWAIT DEVELOPMENT OF PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE CRIME SCENE FOR FURTHER ANALYSIS.
3. REVIEW LOCAL MISSING PERSONS REPORTS TO IDENTIFY THE VICTIM.
4. INVESTIGATE LOCAL CLUBS AND RESTAURANTS WITHIN A 10-BLOCK RADIUS, AS THE VICTIM'S ATTIRE SUGGESTS SHE MAY HAVE FREQUENTED AN EVENING ENTERTAINMENT VENUE.
NOTES:
Detective Cole has requested further investigation into the tire tracks at the scene, as well as any reports of disturbances or suspicious vehicles in the Kensington Avenue area.
THIS CASE REMAINS OPEN AND ACTIVE.
