Twenty-Three | Scout

As we left the diner, our stomachs practically exploding from how much food we ate, I attempted to walk off some of it with Cole, while the others fought over clouds in the sky.

I shook my head, laughing at their petty, but light-hearted argument.

They were...special.

But that's why I loved them.

Cole's voice interrupted me from my thoughts.

"Hey, is it okay if I make a quick phone call?" he pointed at an old telephone booth, near the outdoor seating area of the diner.

Cole looked rather anxious, but I decided not to bring it up since he most likely just wanted to check in with his family.

But I was certain he knew that Olivia had a phone. After all, we did use it to notify the police of the dead body we found when Cole first arrived.

"Why don't you just use Olivia's brick phone?" I suggested confused by his sudden wish to use the booth.

"No, it's fine. You guys should save the credit on that phone for emergencies," he replied coolly, giving me no reason to doubt him.

His reasoning made sense, so I left it at that, without asking any further questions.

"Okay, I'll leave you to it then," I nodded, shrugging my shoulders as I gave him some space.

I dawdled over to the entrance of the diner, taking in the morning breeze.

I laughed as the wind blew across my face, covering my eyes.

When I reached the building, I noticed that there was a bulletin board at the front, which intrigued me. I hadn't caught up with the news in a while.

Don't get me wrong, it was refreshing to take a break from civilisation, but I missed the city now and again.

Looking to my far right, I spotted an old-fashioned newspaper cabinet in the corner of the diner.

I had never seen it before.

"Woah," I breathed out into the sleeve of my jumper and wiped the glass door clean.

I emptied my pockets for a coin and watched one fly out onto the floor.

Kneeling down, I felt around the ground to find it, eventually picking it up and inserting it into the machine.

I opened the door and excitedly picked up a newspaper for the first time in ages, turning around and walking back towards Cole as I began to read it.

Monstrous murderer on the run.

I gasped.

What kind of sicko would take someone else's life like that?

I rolled my eyes, utterly disappointed by the state of our society.

"Let's see who it is," I looked down to find the huge picture captioned, Cole Jackson, age 21.

I laughed, "That's weird, that's Cole's full name,"

I then fully observed the picture, which also looked exactly like Cole.

I looked over at Cole who was also looking at me, concern etched over his face.

I looked back at the picture.

And then back at the picture.

And then back at Cole.

My eyes widened in horror.

Holy crap.

I just kissed a murderer.

I really couldn't catch a break.

My hands were shaking as I walked towards Cole, I almost dropped the newspaper several times.

I didn't know whether I was petrified or livid.

"Scout, wait, I can explain," he pleaded.

Uh, no.

"Explain what? That you're a murderer?! That you lied to all of us?!" I exclaimed, "Because Cole, I don't think anything you can say can explain either of those things,"

I must've caught the attention of the others, who slowly started making their way over to us.

"You don't understand, I-" I was so tired of these men and their stupid excuses. I had listened to Trent's excuses one too many times and look where that got me.

"No, I think I understand perfectly well," I scoffed, pacing around, trying to cope with the situation.

Noah took the newspaper from me and gasped as he read it, the others leaning over his shoulder to see for themselves.

"You're a murderer, you're on the run from the police, and you used every single one of them," I listed, pointing at each of them as I spoke.

"And you used me," I continued, my anger heightening as I kept talking, "I'm done with you and your sick games,"

"Seriously, Cole, how could you?" Olivia looked at him in disbelief as she shoved him, "We were there for you when you were about to die, man...And this is how you treat us?"

"Cole, I thought you were different," Daisy said faintly, disappointment colouring her face.

Eli simply stared at Cole, his eyes said it all, really. He looked scared and confused. Poor kid.

And well Noah, he looked extremely hurt. The two of them had gotten very close over the past couple of weeks, so it was safe to say, he was deeply affected by the news.

"No guys please, you all have it wr-"

"Let's bounce, guys" I cut him off once again, gesturing at the others.

I didn't need to hear his dumb excuses, there was nothing to say.

Point, blank, period.

As I began walking I could hear faint police sirens getting louder and louder, as two cars headed towards us.

Or should I say, Cole.

Someone must've heard us and reported him, I guess.

Good riddance, he deserved to rot in hell for what he did.

"Noah, come on," I yelled, waving him over, to get him away from Cole.

He was nothing but trouble, our lives were better off without him, and safer too.

Part of me began to feel bad, my feelings for him still very present.

I almost turned back, wanting to help him even after everything he had done.

No.

I couldn't let a guy get the best of me. Not again.

He was getting what was coming to him. He didn't deserve our help.
