Thirteen | Scout

Tears blinded me as I ran as quickly as my short legs could carry me. I bolted down the alleyway, quickening my pace to an uncontrollable speed. The pounding noise of my worn-out Nike Airs matched my heart throbbing inside my chest with the thick guilt I felt as I approached Betty's Café.

I threw open the door and fell into the counter as I tried to slow down, causing me to fall onto the floor, my stomach facing the ceiling.

Many eyes darted towards me as I winced in pain.

"Dear, are you okay?"

It was Betty.

She gave me a hand up and sat me down on one of the empty tables.

"Yeah thanks, Betty," I managed to breath out.

Frantically, I looked around the café, but there was no sign of Trent.

I threw my head back in frustration.

He must've left.

How did I let this happen?

I guess I just lost track of time while I was with Cole and Olivia.

Betty handed me a warm cup of her famous Chamomile Herbal Blend, "Your usual,"

I smiled at her as I took a sip of the drink and nodded my head in approval, "No one makes a Chamomile Tea like you, Betty,"

"Only the best for you," She took a seat next to me and winked, "Now, tell me. Why so glum, dear?"

I sighed, "I was supposed to meet Trent in here an hour ago, but I lost track of time and I think he's left,"

Betty furrowed her eyebrows at me, "Trent hasn't been here today, Scout,"

My eyes widened as I choked on my drink, "He hasn't?!"

I began coughing violently as Betty patted my back to relieve me of my fit.

And then she scoffed, "Believe me, I'd know if he came by,"

I smirked at that.

He did always make a big entrance everywhere we went, without fail.

I turned around to look at the vintage clock hanging on the wall, "5:10?"

"I'm sure he'll be here soon, darling. He must be held up doing his important things in his big company," Betty rolled her eyes as she got up to serve someone's order.

***

Another hour had passed.

But it felt like years had passed instead.

Still no sign of Trent.

Maybe he had forgotten about our plans.

Technically I had no right to be mad at him since I wasn't exactly on time myself.

I sighed, twiddling my thumbs as Betty gave me a sympathetic look. She handed me another cup of tea.

I glanced over at the clock once more.

It was almost 7 o'clock now.

Where was he?

Just then, there was a soft jingle as the bell on the café door indicated that someone had entered.

It was Trent.

He was talking to someone on the phone and strolled in as if he wasn't 3 hours late or anything.

No biggie.

I didn't know whether to be offended or relieved.

"Yeah, okay," Trent laughed into the phone, "You take care now, babe."

Babe?

I sipped on my tea and raised eyebrows at the nickname given to someone that wasn't me.

He finally cut the phone and looked around the café to see me and smiled as if nothing had happened.

"Hey!" he kissed my cheek as he sat down.

"Hey," I replied, stirring my tea.

"Sorry I'm a bit late, I had to sort something out at the headquarters,"

A bit late?

No, Trent, I was a bit late.

You, on the other hand, were on a different level of late.

"It's okay. Who was that on the phone?" I pressed for details.

"Oh that?" he took off his suit coat. "Just a colleague that's all,"

I had to admit, he did look good in a suit. I couldn't help but stare.

"Right." I sipped my tea, "Why'd you call her babe, then?"

He laughed, scratching the back of his neck, "Look, I call everyone babe,"

I raised my eyebrows at that as Betty handed Trent his coffee.

"Thanks, babe," he looked up at her and winked.

Betty rolled her eyes and hit him with her tray.

"Ow! See?" he gestured to me while rubbing his head, causing me to laugh.

I shook my head and gave him a peck on the lips, "Yeah, okay, doofus,"

"Yeah, but I'm your doofus."

***

We walked hand in hand through the forest, as we headed back to the base.

Trent's phone kept ringing, interrupting our conversation every five seconds.

Every time, he would pull it out and decline, which was sweet, but it was starting to get on my nerves. "Aren't you going to answer that? It might be important?"

"Nothing's as important as spending quality time with my girlfriend," he smiled, making my heart flutter.

Trent always knew how to make me smile.

He leaned in to kiss me, and as our lips were about to touch, his phone rang again.

Groaning, he gave me a sympathetic look as he answered it, mouthing that it'd only take a minute.

I sent him a warm smile back and nodded. I knew how stressful his job was.

"Hey. Yeah, I'll be there in a bit,"

He cut the phone and went to put his phone back in his suit pocket, but missed and dropped it on the floor.

It bounced at my feet and I knelt down to grab it for him.

I pulled up my sleeve and rubbed the dirt off it.

Suddenly, it vibrated causing me to startle.

It was a text from someone called Ashley.

Can't wait to see you tonight! xxx

Damn. Three kisses? Wasn't that awful sweet for her.

Trent snatched the phone from me and read the message.

I turned away and walked through the bushes towards where all of the tents were. It was silent, everyone most likely asleep.

"Scout, it's not what it looks like,"

"I never said anything," I retorted, turning around.

"Look. Ashley, she was just talking about a company event we're going to tonight," he explained cooly as if it meant nothing.

"Okay, I believe you," I said, nodding curtly.

"You know, you have no right to be mad at me since you're always whoring around with what's his face."

"What?" I asked, my voice cracking, "I'm whoring around?"

"Please, I've seen the way you look at Cole," he scoffed.

Tears were beginning to form and I could barely speak, "Cole is just a friend,"

I walked up to him and slapped him in the face.

"Don't ever call me that," I spat.

"Scout-"

"No, Trent, we're over."

"Go away, and never come back,"

I ran off to the lake, unable to hold my tears back any longer.

Finally, I sat down and let the tears fall down my face.

How dare he talk to me like that?

Shaking my thoughts off and I stared at the water to calm myself down.

I felt a hand on my shoulder, my blood boiling in an instant.

Really? Did he actually have the nerve to follow me here?

I turned around to punch Trent square in the face.

But then I held my hands over my mouth and gasped, instantly regretting it as it wasn't him.

"Oh my god, I'm so sorry!"
