Seventeen | Scout
The mud sat in uneven patches, scattered over the sloped concrete farmyard.
I took in the fresh air as I gave the goats their hay to eat.
Sighing, I sat down on the grass as the goats fed themselves.
I felt a presence slump next to me.
Daisy.
It was like she knew that I needed her.
"How are you holding up?" she asked, giving me a warm smile.
"Fine, I guess," I replied, pulling apart at strings of hay, "I miss him,"
"I know," Daisy said, taking the hay out of my hands, "And it's okay to be upset,"
I didn't respond.
Daisy let out a deep breathtaking her hands in mine, "I know it hurts, but believe me, you did the right thing,"
"Did I?" I questioned, looking into her eyes, tears almost trickling down my eyes, "How could I have let him go like that, I mean what's the point if you don't fight for love,"
"Well if it's love, then where is he now?" she shook her head, "Why is he not fighting for you? Isn't love two-sided?"
I stood up, "You have a point,"
She was right. He hadn't come back to win me back or anything – maybe I didn't mean as much to him as he meant to me.
"I should just forget about him," I stated, helping Daisy up.
She gave me a hug, "I know you're older than me, but that doesn't mean I'm not here for you, Scout,"
"Thank you, Daisy," I squeezed her hand, and mustered my best smile for her.
It was time to forget about Trent, once and for all.
***
A couple of hours had passed, and I was beginning to feel much better.
"Daisy, don't we need to feed the chickens too?" I reminded, pointing at the coop.
She thought about it for a second, "Yeah, actually, not quite yet but by the time we get to the barn and come back it should be time,"
That was true, the barn was quite far from where we were.
"But who's going to look after the cattle?" I asked, pointing at the cows.
"I'll tell you what, I'll herd them in, while you fetch the food. It's not really a two-person job anyway," Daisy suggested.
"Good idea, I'll go now," I replied, walking off.
"Oi, Scout!" she called, laughing.
I turned around puzzled, "Yeah?"
"Forgetting something?" she dangled the keys, making a clinking sound.
"Of course," I facepalmed, "Throw them to me,"
I was too lazy to go back and get them.
"Are you sure? You're awfully great at catching," she chuckled.
"Yes, I'm sure?" I scoffed, rolling my eyes.
Honestly, who did she think I was, an uncoordinated mess?
If she thought I was an uncoordinated mess, she would be right.
Next thing I knew, the keys were hurtling towards me at a very quick pace, and my confidence disappeared just as fast.
The keys hit my face and fell into my hands.
I'm counting that.
"Are you okay?" Daisy called, stifling a laugh.
"Just fine," I muttered, turning my heel and heading towards the barn.
***
I underestimated how far away the barn was, it didn't seem so far when we were looking at it before.
But then again, looks can be deceiving.
I unlocked the door and entered, eyeing up the storage cupboard.
As I opened it, I groaned, "Empty, just great,"
There was another one, but it was on the second floor, and I had to climb a ladder to get there.
And let's just say, this wasn't the safest ladder I'd ever seen.
I took a deep breath as I began to climb up.
The door creaked open.
I could've sworn I shut it.
"Who is it?" I called out, turning around.
I mentally face palmed as I let go of the ladder.
I braced myself, waiting to hit the floor.
But it never happened.
I fell safely into the hands of someone.
Their touch felt familiar.
I turned around to face them.
We locked eyes firmly and I tilted my head as my eyes focused on their face.
"Trent?"
***
"What the hell are you doing here?" I demanded, not sure whether I was thankful that he saved me or angry that it was him.
"I came here to see you," he replied, picking up my favourite flowers from the floor.
Lilies.
He must've dropped them trying to catch me.
Trent dusted them off and handed them to me.
I smiled at the gesture, maybe he did care.
No.
What was I thinking? He disrespected me, why should I give in to this, just because he remembered what my favourite flowers were?
I shook my head, and shoved the flowers into his chest, "If you think that flowers will fix this, you're even more deluded than I thought,"
I climbed the ladder with confidence, just so I could get away from him.
As I fetched the chicken food, I heard his voice, "I know, but it's a start,"
I couldn't argue with that, maybe I should've listened to what e had to say first.
I climbed down carefully and turned to face him, "You have one minute,"
He smiled, taking my hands into his, "That's all I need,"
That made my heart flutter. It reminded me of the guy I fell in love with.
"I'm so sorry for accusing you of cheating on me, I guess I'm just really insecure because you're you," he looked into my eyes, "and well, you're just amazing to be around, no wonder Cole likes you too,"
"He doesn't-" I began, shaking my head.
"He does, it's so obvious, and I haven't even been around him much," he laughed, "Do I blame him? No. Does it make me crazy jealous? Hell yes."
I couldn't get over what he had said to me though, it hurt a lot, "But-"
"But," he interrupted as if he knew what I was going to say, "It doesn't excuse what I said, and it kills me just thinking about it,"
"It does?" I questioned, my heart beating fast.
"I would give anything to take it back," he said sincerely, kissing my hands.
"Trent," I sighed.
He wasn't making this easy.
"I understand if you don't forgive me, but I just wanted you to know how sorry I am," A tear slipped down his cheek.
I could tell he meant it.
We stood in silence, staring at each other for what felt like centuries.
Finally, I let go of his hands, causing him to press his eyes together.
"You know," I began, taking a step closer.
"Yeah?" he breathed out, looking dejected.
I went on my tiptoes, "I really can't stay mad at you,"
And with that, I kissed him.
I don't know why, but I just did.
It took him a couple of seconds to process the fact that my lips were against his, and to say he was shocked was an understatement.
But soon, he began kissing me back and pulled me close to him with one swift movement.
I thought I heard the door creak open again, but I shrugged it off, deepening the kiss.
"What the-"
I turned around to see Noah and Cole, gawking at us.
I cringed at the thought of them catching us kissing.
They both stood there, neither of them uttering a word.
Honestly, I didn't blame them, I wasn't sure what to say either.
"Hey guys," Trent smiled, intertwining our hands.
I smiled awkwardly.
They both nodded, acknowledging our presences.
Cole stalked over to the storage cabinet and grabbed some supplies.
He glanced over at me once, an unreadable expression on his face, and left without a word.
My heart sank as he walked off into the distance.
I let go of Trent's hand.
Noah ran his fingers through his hair, unable to come to terms with the situation.
I understood that - even I was still coming to terms with it, everything happened so quickly.
He turned around sighing, "Cole, wait up,"
"Noah, wait," I called, racing after him in an attempt to explain something I didn't fully comprehend myself.
"Save it, Scout," he waved me off, running to catch up with Cole
I'll admit, I deserved that. I looked down at the grass, feeling stupid for what I had just done.
I turned back to Trent, who gave me a tender smile, and I managed to return one back, as he enveloped me into an embrace.
As I hugged him, I couldn't help but feel distracted.
Why did I feel so guilty about Cole seeing us?
My eyes widened, as my head rested over Trent's shoulder and I realised the fact of the matter.
I had feelings for Cole Jackson.
