Chapter 18

And so the story continues. Now I must write on to figure out how in the world I am supposed to fit my ideas together.

Brendan had run out of air. He held his hands over his mouth and nose in one last attempt to breathe. They had only managed to create a small crack in the glass. Not deep enough for the water pressure to break the rest of the glass.

May stood next to the glass shouting Brendan's name as she cried and banged her fist onto the glass. It was no use but May wouldn't stop trying to break the glass. Gladion didn't either and wished he knew what to do to help but he couldn't do any extra damage because his pokémon weren't with him. That's when the idea struck him.

"May, use your pokémon to break the glass!" Gladion said. He'd forgotten that she had her pokémon with her.

"Are you kidding me?! You'll end up hurting him!" Lisia said but May had already released one of her pokémon. "Whoa!" Gladion thought as he backed out of Blaziken's way.

"Blaze Kick that glass!" May said. Her Blaziken mega evolved to add extra power to the kick and then attacked. The glass shattered like a sheet of ice but Brendan's hands had already started to drift lifelessly beside him.

May caught him as he fell out of the container. With Gladion's help, she managed to get him away from any of the glass and then she started to perform CPR. There was no response from Brendan. Gladion could no longer watch. He already knew what it felt like to die and he also knew what it felt like to lose someone close.

He didn't want to know what it felt like to watch someone die. He was about to tell May to stop but then he heard Brendan coughing up water. He looked over to see May and now Lisia by Brendan's side. May on the left and Lisia on the right.

"Wait, he still isn't breathing!" Gladion said in alarm as Brendan began to gasp for air. He failed but as he started to go limp again. He managed to say three last words. "I...love you."

There was no way to know which girl he was talking to. He had been looking of into the distance and then Gladion felt sick all of a sudden. He had been the one to tell Brendan that he'd told (y/n) that he'd loved her when he was about to die. May began to sob very loudly as she tried doing CPR again. Lisia backed away from Brendan and curdled into a ball and cried as well. Gladion tried to get up but he felt too sick and threw up. Death was a truly terrible thing.

"This is my fault. I shouldn't have told him. Maybe he gave up once he got caught because of me," Gladion thought. He felt a few tears sliding down his own face. He hadn't know Brendan for very long but he had grown on him in the very little time the two had spent. May was still trying to revive him with no success. Gladion couldn't let her jeep doing that to herself. She had to know that he was gone.

"May. May stop it," he said as calmly as he could manage. She didn't listen to him, so he went over to her and put his hand on her shoulder before telling her to stop again. She still didn't listen.

"May. You have to stop...please stop," he said. He didn't want to tell her but he had to. She still ignored him and cried as she swiped his hand from her shoulder.

"May he's gone!" Gladion said as he started to pull her away from him. She faught him and screamed, "No! Let me save him! He needs me to save him!" Gladion somehow got her away from him and in to his lap.

She had stopped sobbing but tears still ran down her face in great numbers. He let her go and she crawled back over to where Brendan lay. She layed next to him and rested her head on his chest with her eyes closed. She hugged him close to her and nuzzled him but there was nothing else she could do.

"Why..." she whimpered. "Why did you leave me? Why did you have to go?"

Gladion wanted to offer her words of comfort but he didn't know very many. He didn't know if anyone had offered (y/n) any words of comfort when he had died. He highly doubted it. She had tried offering him words of comfort when he had learned of his sister and friends' deaths but he hadn't let her. He kind of left.

Now he wished that he hadn't. Maybe he could have prevented this. May had stopped crying and she let Brendan go. She sat up but stayed next to him. She looked Gladion right in the eyes. Her own eyes seemed quite distant, as if she was looking through him rather than at him. Regret, sadness, and mostly anger displayed in her distant eyes and then she spoke.

"Gladion...this is my fault isn't it. If I had been the one to get captured instead, he would still be here. If I hadn't gotten in a fight with his father that day, he would still be here. If I hadn't taken the time to talk to Steven and Wallace that day, he would still be here. If I hadn't looked for that stupid meteorite, he would still be here. If I hadn't wasted time yelling at Lisia for being with Team Magma in Lilycove, he would still be here."

"Wait...Lisia what were you doing in Lilycove to begin with. You were supposed to be in Slateport for a special performance that you'd told me about. You had no reason to be there." May creepily and slowly turned her head to Lisia who lifted her head to see May's expression. May had officially snapped.

Perhaps Brendan was the only one capable of keeping her anger habits in check. She tended to get mad easily when someone did something to offend her. At least that's what Gladion noticed. She was beyond angry now.

"You. This was never my fault...no. It was your fault. You saw him suffering didn't you. You saw him bleed but you did nothing. You didn't do anything until it was too late," May said as she and Lisia slowly stood up. Lisia was backing away from the girl.

"May...what are you doing?" Lisia asked. She was shaking possibility from fear of what May might do to her. Lisia suddenly ran out of room to back up. She bumped into the wall with nowhere else to go but left or right. Gladion hadn't even realized that May had gotten so far away from him.

Gladion stood up and was about to walk over to her but May noticed and said quite threateningly, "Stay out of this, Gladion. This is between me and her."

Gladion was not one to comply to orders from others easily but he wasn't stupid either. He knew better than to get between an angry girl and her target in a situation such as this one.

May lounged forward quickly and grabbed Lisia by her throat. She lifted the girl clear off of the ground by three whole inches and watched her as she faught for air.

"May! Let her go!" Gladion said. He didn't think Lisia was right to do anything that she may have done but he also didn't think May should strangle the girl for it.

"Give me one reason. Just one," May growled without even taking her eyes fron Lisia as the girl clawed at May's hand.

"It's not her fault that Brendan is dead, it's actually mine," he said. May instantly dropped Lisia and turned to face him. He face no longer showing anger.

"How could you say that when you don't even know what she's done. You don't actually know her so how could you say something like that?" she said. It was sadness. That was the emotion that she was displaying.

"It's true, May. If I had never left. Brendan wouldn't have been taken," he reasoned.

"But how would you know? You can't tell the future like that!" May said raising her voice a little.

"Well then how could you say that everything is your fault because you spent time doing something elsewhere. How would you have known if that time could have been used to save him?" Gladion said. May stayed quite after this.

They all did until Lisia finally said, "I'm sorry, May. I was being selfish and I'm sorry. I just wanted him to like me but I just made things worse," Lisia said. She had finally stood up but kept her gaze to the floor.

"I'm...sorry too. I just...I guess I let my regrets and anger get the best of me. It's good to know that he actually liked you though," May said as she looked down as well.

"Wait what?! Brendan doesn't like me!" Lisia said in alarm. "Oh great. They make up but then they talk about romance. That just great," Gladion thought as he sighed and did his signature frown. May and Lisia ignored him.

"He said it before...well yeah. But he said it and I'm quite sure he meant you. I'm nothing in comparison," May said as she looked back at her friend and smiled only a little.

"Hey, I don't want to break this umm moment up or anything, but we can't stay here forever. The world's kind of ending right now," Gladion said. As if on cure, another louder and likely larger explosion was heard and its force knocked the three of them off of their feet.

"We have to go!" Lisia said as she headed for the door but May didn't move from her stop.

"I am NOT leaving him," May said as she pointed towards Brendan. "I'll get him. Just help me," Gladion said. Gladion got Brendan with May's help and carried him piggyback style. He could have sworn he felt a faint heartbeat as they all made their escape.
