Chapter 7
-August 20-
It had been a week since I went for my job interview, and over a week since I was kicked out of my old life. I guess you could say that I'm living the dream. I have a cool brother, a nice apartment, a job (yes the aquarium took me!), and the paranoia of being accepted into a college when my grades were really bad from you know, having to kill monsters and go on quests. Stuff like that.
The only thing was, it felt like something was missing from my life, not something from before, but something that would make the rest feel more right than it already does. And me thinking with my hormones, decided it was a girl that was missing. Now, I wasn't going to actively find someone to date like Grant did (it's rather funny the amount of times he gets stood up because he came on too strong), but I was going to put myself out there.
That being said, Grant and I had a little extra money to spend on cheap restaurant food, and planned to go for dinner until I got hung up at work. There was this group of kids, probably third graders, who were on a field trip with their after school program. They were cute! I quickly texted Grant that I wouldn't make it for dinner and that I'll scrounge up something to eat and went to find the chaperones.
There were two of them, no surprise the group of kids was only ten or fifteen max. One of them was a guy in his mid fifties with graying hair and tired brown eyes. The second was a girl about my age, I'm guessing seventeen or eighteen, with red/gold brown hair and curious blue eyes. They were currently in the big fish area, some of the kids' noses were plastered against the glass.
"Excuse me sir, my name is Percy. Can I help you with anything?" I asked politely. Both the chaperones looked at me with relief.
"Yes, thank you. We've been waiting ages for someone to show us where the kids can eat some snack." The man said. I smiled.
"Right, follow me." I led them to where my manager had said was where parties like these eat. Some people held birthday parties, and some held field trips.
Once all the kids were seated and waiting for snack, I asked "is there anything else I can do for you?"
The man shook his head and went to dish out boats for the kids to eat out of. I turned to leave, but the girl chaperone stopped me.
"Actually, yes there is one more thing." She said. I turned back and waited for her to continue.
"Could you show me where the bathroom is?" She asked, looking down at a little boy who was clinging to her like a life line. It made me chuckle a bit.
"Of course."
We walked silently to the restrooms and the whole time I had my hands stuffed into the pockets of my jeans. The girl sent the boy in and waited out in the hallway.
"Percy, right?" She asked.
"Uh yes." I said, awkwardly clearing my throat. I looked at her directly for the first time and nearly lost the ability to speak English. She looked at me funny.
"You spoke perfect English before but are you American? Because that definitely wasn't English." My eyes slowly widened. I did lose the ability to speak English because I spoke Ancient Greek!
"I'm sorry about that. Yes I'm Percy, and yes I'm American. I was born here in New York actually. May I ask your name?"
"Ophelia." She said. I nodded.
"That's a Greek name." Her lips twisted into a beautiful smile.
"It is. My mother was in love with Greek literature as well as Shakespeare. She named my little brother Helios. We call him Lio for short."
"My mother named me Perseus. In hopes that my life would be like the only Greek hero who got a happy ever after." Ophelia snickered.
"Sounds like she was trying to ruin your life. You know it means 'one who destroys' right?" I rolled my eyes but gave her a smile.
"Shotty work I know." Ophelia pulled a pen from the pocket of her jeans.
"Let me see your arm." She said. I held it out for her and she scribbled something on my arm.
"Call me sometime. I'd love to know where your name took you." Before I could respond, the little boy came running out of the bathroom and the two of them went back to the group.
I looked down at my arm to see she'd written her number down. The only sucky thing was that I couldn't exactly read it well. I walked over to one of my coworkers and asked them to put the number in my phone under the name 'Ophelia'.
They left me in charge of closing and I headed to Paul's car to go home. I grinned to myself the whole way.
//this was meant for yesterday 😬//
