Chapter 5
-August 13-
Grant and I spent the whole night in the police station. Not like we were arrested or anything, but they wanted to make sure they had everything. I'm not even sure why I called the police when I knew who killed them, but I suppose I wouldn't be able to do anything more than the police could with my current predicament.
"You didn't have to stay here you know." I said to Grant.
"Of course I did. I'm a witness to finding the murder, like you, and you're my only decent family I've got left." He had a point there. Grant was my only living family left and we were both there when finding my parents.
"Mr. Jackson, Mr. Levinson, you are both free to go." The cop who was interviewing us said.
"What about where I'm going to live? I'm not eighteen." I asked, confused.
"You've been emancipated. Your father signed the papers a few days ago along with your mother." I felt like I was hit with a brick in my stomach.
"Oh, okay."
"Thank you sir." Grant said, tugging me away.
The police let me back into the apartment to collect all of my other clothes, the ones they didn't burn at camp, and to see what money my parents had outside the banks. It wasn't much by upper class standards, but enough that combined with whatever Grant had, we'd be able to find a decent place to live and have enough for food. We had talked on the ride to the apartment about it, and for the first time since my world came crashing down, I was happy.
"That's not a lot of clothes." Grant pointed out. I looked at the half packed bag of clothes on my old bed.
"Well most of them were at camp and I'm pretty sure they had a burning party for them. It's not a big deal. Less laundry." There were only five shirts, three pairs of pants, one sweatshirt, and a pretty good amount of underwear and socks. I managed to stuff a winter jacket, and a bunch of random toiletries from the bathroom into the bag. It was still half full.
Next to the bag was a box that contained every camp memorabilia I owned. It had tons of pictures, a couple seeds, the Minotaur's horn, and my Praetor cape. I pulled my bead necklace over my head and put it into the box too. The only thing I couldn't get rid of was the SPQR brand I got in the spring. Maybe if I could afford it, I'd tattoo something over it.
"Ready to go apartment and job hunting?" Grant asked.
"More than ready." I slung the bag of clothes over my shoulder, grabbed the keys to Paul's Prius and the box, and headed out the door.
