Chapter 10

We'd only been here for twenty minutes but I liked it. It felt normal, as normal as a demigod could get and I really liked it. We sat outside the restaurant in the front. The table had a candle in the middle of it and a small bouquet of flowers beside it. The air was cool, but not so cold we'd need a jacket.

Ophelia sat in front of me, her blue eyes running over the menu. Her hair was curled and the front strands were pinned back. I noticed she didn't wear make up. Suddenly she looked up at me with curious look.

"You're nervous, Perseus. Are you okay?" I sat stunned for a moment since she used my full name.

"Uh well, not really." I tugged at my collar like it was too tight. "I've never done the whole having dinner thing." Ophelia smiled at me.

"Understandable. Neither have I, unless you count taking Lio out for dinner. My mom tends to work night shifts a lot at the hospital so I'm basically Lio's babysitter. But it's okay. He was the boy who I took to the restroom the other day."

"Oh. What about your dad?" I asked. I wanted to ask about the age difference, but I wasn't sure if that would be rude or not.

"My dad, unironically, is a Yankees star. He plays shortstop. Phillip Morano. My parents married young and had me and then after a while found out about Lio. I think the only things they regret is how much my dad comes and goes because of baseball. What about your family?"

"My mom married this guy who wasn't the nicest person to exist when I was around six, but after that dissolved, she married my high school English teacher, Paul. My dad is a nomad of sorts so I have two half brothers, Tyson and Grant. Tyson I rarely get to see, and Grant I live with. My mom and Paul were killed a few weeks ago. Maybe less." I scratched the back of my head. Ophelia had a look of sympathy and sadness.

"Are you okay?" She asked.

"I-you know I don't think I've processed it yet? I'm not sure how. I walked into my old apartment to find them but they had been killed so I called the police. That's when I found out she and my dad emancipated me. But I don't think it was out of love. It's complicated."

"Complicated? What's your damage?"

"Damage?"

"Yeah like everything that makes the situation complicated." I wanted to tell her about camp. So badly. She seemed like someone who'd get it, someone with an outside perspective. But I couldn't just tell her. It wouldn't just be me and Grant who'd be exposed. I opened my mouth to say something but I never got the chance.

A car flew into the window of the restaurant on the other side of the door. Glass shattered everywhere and the spray of it caused me and Ophelia to take cover under the table. Some dinner this was, we never even ordered. I looked at Ophelia first to see if she was okay then pulled Riptide from my pocket. Cars don't fly like that into restaurant windows. I turned towards the direction it came from. A blonde girl with a bone sword was battling a cyclopes. A blonde girl with a bone sword. Annabeth.

"Perseus, what the heck is that?" Ophelia pointed to the cyclopes. My eyes grew wide and I stood up in front of her. The cyclopes noticed me and started to charge. I guess it gave Annabeth an opening, and before it reached me the cyclopes was a pile of golden dust. Ignoring Annabeth's approaching figure, I stuffed Riptide back in my pocket and held a hand out for Ophelia to take. In my peripheral vision, there was a look of jealousy on Annabeth's face.
