Tombstone Arc, Chapter 2: A Responsibility
(A/n: What Spider-Man theme is your favorite? I grew up with Tobey's, but I've been falling in love with the TASM themes)
*Beep! Beep!*
Miles starts shifting in his head as he lazily moves his foot. He first tries to slam his heel on the snooze, but can't figure out where it is. He moves his foot left and right, faster the more beeps enter his ear. He groans in annoyance as he sits up from his bed, only to find the alarm right next to his ear. He sighs, facepalming before he flips off the alarm. "Sigh... Y/n. We gotta get up."
There was no answer as Miles started to stretch. "Yo, Y/n! I wanna sleep in too, but we gotta get up."
Underneath his bunk bed, was Y/n sleeping on the ceiling of his bed, in a little web cocoon. Y/n's webs sticked him to the top, to keep himself warm. The webbing had a blue tint to it, a fact that Y/n failed to notice the night before. A comical sleep bubble is seen out of Y/n's nose as he sleeps. Miles sighed as Y/n's head started ringing. Miles landed on the floor and slowly turned around to wake Y/n up. The webs quickly dissolved and Y/n landed on the bed, as if nothing happen. Miles fully turned around and looked at him, lightly shaking the boy. "Y/n...Y/n? Come on, man."
"Hm...five more minutes." Y/n says, as he stands up. He then streches and spins in a circle, Miles just shrugged.
"I'm not even gonna mention the fact you already got up and move onto your eyes." Miles asked as Y/n raised an eyebrow. "You've got blue contacts?"
Y/n looked in the mirror and moves his eyelid up to get a better look, it was indeed Blue now. "Must be a side effect, I'll have to see if that's a normal effect...wait how?"
"Yeah, guess I forgot to take them out before I fell asleep." Y/n said as he smiled, Miles smirked at him before scooting him over to grab his toothbrush. Y/n's eyes went wide, face palmed. "I totally forgot to unpack."
"Yep." Miles chuckled as he brushed his teeth, turning his head over his shoulder to look at Y/n's bags. A small black suitcase of Y/n's stuff was in it, the initials read B.F.P. "How come you only brought one bag? You know where gonna be living her till high school's over, right?"
Y/n stayed silent, his lips quivered before he shook his head in his head. He smiled and scratched the back of his head. "Yeah, I know. I guess I didn't have as much stuff as I thought."
Miles started to understand as he rubbed his shoulder. He finished brushing his teeth, putting the brush in the cup before he pat Y/n on the back. "Hey...let's go check out the place!"
"Huh?" Y/n wondered as Miles started to put on his shoes.
"Well, we went straight to packing the dorm. We didn't really check out the place right?" Miles said as Y/n smiled, feeling comfort with Miles. Y/n quickly brushed his teeth and left the faucet running after he finished. Miles looked away to tie his shoes as Y/n's webs latched themselves on the faucet, Y/n looked at it confused.
"Hey! What are you doing?!" He whispered to the webs as it turned off the water and made a web finger to point at it. As if it was reminding him to turn it off next time, Y/n worried.
"Y/n?" Miles looked up at him, Y/n froze as he started sweat. But the webs were already gone by the time he looked over. "You coming?"
"How am I gonna get used to this?" He thought as he sat on the bed, putting on his shoes. He then hopped up and went towards the door with Miles, "yeah, let's..."
Y/n took the handle in his hand before looking back out the window, he felt an unease with the warm sky, but closed the door. "Let's go."
Y/n and Miles walked down the long hall, full of dorms as the two took more of their environment around this time. Y/n scratched the back of his head. "I'm surprised I even got in."
"You got a lottery, so you got in just like everyone else." Miles wore his headphones around his school uniform. He seemed bothered by the fact he got in as well. "Whether we got in through pure luck, or not..."
"...Well, why did you want to come to this school." Y/n asked as Miles looked to his left to look at the boy.
"I...I didn't...but... I'm sure I'll find something here... I have to..." Miles sounded desperate, almost if his voice got quieter. Y/n lowered his head a bit, Miles then looked at him. "What about you? What're you doing in this kinda school?"
Y/n puts his hands in his pockets, looking past the boy and out towards the window again. "I guess...it was just a chance... a chance to get the education I needed... I thought 'why not give it a shot'? There was no expectations placed on me...I guess I just wanted some for once."
Miles patted his shoulder, "well I'm sure that's gonna change... hope for the best, prepare for the worst."
Y/n smiled as he's seen walking to FEAST, "Mom...dad... I wish I could get some advice right now..."
'———————-' The ringing in Y/n's head started again. But Y/n closed his eyes and saw a blue projection in his mind. It showed the city highlighted in blue, as explosions. It was as if his Spider Sense...just knew what was going to happen. Y/n opened his eyes in shock as the ringing kept getting more intense. "Wha-?! What was that!?"
He saw an old lady walking on the street as Y/n quickly saw an image from his spider sense: an explosion about to go off right where she was. Y/n quickly rushed to her and picked her up. "LOOK OUT!!"
He then ran to a safe distance before the the explosion went off, the shockwave blew the shop to pieces as the city ground was destroyed. Y/n quickly covered the old woman's face as she gripped his jacket. "HANG ON!!"
"What's happening?! Young man, what's going on?!" She asked as Y/n was confused until he looked up, to see his Spider Sense was right about what was going to happen. A very pale man stood on a skyscraper, he took one more puff of his cigar before he dropped it onto the city. The cigar, replaced with a smirk. The man reached inside his trench coat. A sliver control, he pressed the button as a machine on the Manhattan Bridge started to flash. But... there was no explosion on the Manhattan Bridge, the control may have been there, but the bombs were all over the city. Like Y/n's Spider-Sense told him, explosions started going off throughout the city. Y/n's eyes shook as he worried, devastated.
"The..the bombs! Their going off!! It's because...I..." Y/n said before he rushed forward as screams filled the streets. "Please, get somewhere safe! There are more people in danger! I'll be back!"
"Wait! Don't go alone!" She shouted as Y/n ignored her. Dust started to fill the streets as more explosions went off.
Y/n rushed forward, noticing the falling debris. "Whoa! The whole city is falling apart!!"
"Help! Please!" Y/n heard someone in the distance before seeing some people trapped under rubble. Luckily, Y/n found an empty paper bag and through it over his head. He then looked at his wrist.
"Alright, Web, work with me here." Y/n said to himself as he aimed his arms at the debris, the webs stuck to it. The webs noticed the situation before extending vertically and latching onto a street light above, pulling the debris off. Y/n quickly slid over, helping the people up. "Hey! Are you okay?! Can you walk?!"
"Y-Yes! Thank you!" One said as she helped her girlfriend up.
Y/n nodded at them and pointed at them, "look out for each other, try to stay off any main roads!"
Y/n leaped over a car to find more people, before it was crushed with falling concrete, Y/n's webs pushed him out of the way before another debris fell on him. He hasn't found any other people and he looked at his wrist. "Thanks! We almost got-!"
*BOOM!!*
As if time slowed down, Y/n's head rang once more. Y/n turned his head to a clothes shop. In the back of the room, a orange flare shined. Y/n's eyes widened as the flare got bigger and bigger. Y/n's eyes grow wide as the explosion rings out. The burns and force knocked Y/n backwards at a blinding speed into a car. Knocking him out cold, the fire started to ring out, the bag burned off. "Over there!"
The old lady from before brought two men with her as they quickly rushed to the boy. "Oh! Oh my lord! Help! Somebody help!"
Cries, screams, filled the air. The warm city was now even brighter than before. From an overhead view, one could even say that the explosion could spell out a name:
Lonnie Lincoln.
————————
"Peter, he's going to be okay." MJ said as she looked at the room Y/n was in, of course it was a normal hospital. Which worried the two, but there was nothing the two could do about it now. "He's got those... advanced healing factors, right?"
"The spiders that bit me and Gwen are dead. If this new spider is different than ours, there's no telling what could happen." Peter stated, not taking the news very well. He paced back and forth ever since he got the news, of course, he was dealing with his office destruction as well. "If...if I was there...!"
"Peter! Stop!" MJ said as she looked at Peter. Peter stopped and looked up at her. "You were living your life, like all these people. You were not in the wrong here."
"This Spider-Man doesn't get to stop... he doesn't deserve..." Peter said as he held MJ's hand in sadness. "...he doesn't get to have a life like that..."
MJ frowned, but squeezed his hands. "Then maybe that Spider-Man should give up the mask, so he could live his life..."
Peter looked down, away from MJ. It was an uncomfortable silence until the doctor came out of the room. Both dropped their hands and looked at the doctor. "Mr and Mrs. Parker. To be completely frank, he will be fine. His body healed through most of the slight burns."
"Oh, good! Thank goodness!" Peter said as the doctor nodded.
"Indeed. Although it was weird how fast his body healed." The doctor got suspicious before MJ tried to throw him off.
"So, why is he in here?" She asked as the doctor flipped through the notes.
"Well, about three hours ago, explosions rang out throughout the city. As such, we had calls, and are still getting them, about the injured people." The doctor said as he sighed. "Your son was one of them. Apparently he helped some people through the explosions and was rushing to find more. Based on the damage, I'd say it was more of the shock and the shockwave itself that knocked him out."
The adults sighed before the TV came on. "My city... my home... my pain... what else could it possibly be for me?"
Peter looked at the man on the tv. An albino male with pink irises, disfigured nose and filed teeth. "None of you care if I share, do you? When I was younger, my albinism made me an outcast among the children my age. A supposed strange thing, I also had a problem with my vocal chords, making my younger self speak in whispers, like I'm beneath people. Like I had to look up to someone at all times. I had almost no one, alone in the world."
Peter looked down at the room, to see that lights were on. And a voice was heard. He looked through the door and opened it, to see Y/n staring at the tv. Clutching the bed like his life depended on it, in rage, in sadness, in failure. The man continued to speak. "Through all that time I thought, why should I have to take this? Why should I have to act differently to fit their needs, their desires? Why don't I become the monster? Hm? To be the man they always wanted me to be. It's a tale as old as time."
Through the city, people in their homes watched it. It was on every news station in New York City, and around the world. "But... that wasn't such an easy thing to do...the game was so one sided, it was almost unfair. 'Heroes, Monsters, Villains' it's all a game... based on the idea to become more than just humans. A symbol. Everyone's free to choose between the clowns, jesters, the king and the queens, the heroics or the failures. But me? I was friendless... always clouded by darkness, swarming around me."
Miles watched on the news as he was with his family, his dad finally got home and Rio looked at him, before she pointed to the tv. "It's not hard to tell who plays the hero, who it was gonna be every single time. What chance did I stand? Like the fables in history, there is no scenario where the villain would win. I was always the loser, the castaway, the outcast! The popular kid always picks on the kid that nobody likes, this cruel world just works that way, and we accept it. Violence is the only way people can rise up to the challenge and evolve, the only time we see there's an issue. In fact, it's proving true right now. Humans are rising up, becoming better in order to stop me, and my goals...but you know what?"
Lonnie leaned into the camera, as if he was looking right in Y/n's eyes. "Fuck justice, screw evil as well... this message to make it known that changes will be made, starting with New York City. Good? Evil? I'll break them both, if it means us humans will finally learn something. I'll do, what no one else will."
The broadcast stopped as everything went back to normal...whatever the new normal would be. Y/n gripped his sheets and cried. "If I had just...! Stopped that man! If I had found the control myself! Because I left it to someone else, this all happened! Damn it! Damn it!!"
Peter could see the look in Y/n's eyes. That rage, he had it long ago. He could only wonder if Y/n could go through with it. After all, times have changed and by the looks of it... so was the city.
————————————
"I can't believe they let us go, huh?" Peter said as he drove Y/n back home. Y/n was silent through the whole trip. Peter could feel where he is. "I'm glad you're okay."
"The city isn't though..." Y/n said as he looked out the window. Peter nodded as he drove.
"Yeah well, it's never truly been okay, has it? Yet, superheroes will always come around and save the day." Peter said, but he was taking into what Lonnie was saying.
"It happened because we leave the job to them..." Y/n said as he looked at the people on the streets. They were so hostile and in fear towards one another. A mother covered her child's eyes as she led them past a man. "If each of us take a step up, and do something about all this...we wouldn't have to leave it to them. I should've taken matters into my own hands..."
Peter looks at his son figure though his rear view mirror and sighed. "Y/n... I know, what you're feeling right now..."
Y/n scoffed, "I doubt that, Peter. Sorry."
Peter sighed. "It's true, and you don't have to understand it right away. Look, when I lost my uncle Ben, I could've stopped the robber. Since I didn't, my Uncle Ben got shot...I struggled at that with a long time... I still do..."
"How do you...how do you cope with it..." Y/n asked him as Peter stopped at his school.
"You never truly cope with it... but it taught me something. No matter your choices back in the past, everyone always has a choice to do the right thing in the present. Whether you die or not, you have a choice. Some would call it, an obligation or responsibility." Peter said as Y/n started to understand. Y/n started to get out the car, taking in each word. He looks back at Y/n, "hey. If you need any help, just let me know."
"Of course." Y/n said and closed the door. Peter drove off as Y/n looked at his school. "Alright, let's start this again."
Y/n walked through the halls to his room, although it felt ten times larger than it was. "Hey, Did you hear about that guy on the air?"
"Yeah, their gang has been wrestling with Fisk's goons over land." One student was talking to her group.
"If this continues, an all out gang war might start!" Another student said to his friend as they walked down the hall.
"It's already started, man..." He said sadly.
"If it moves up here..." Olivia said to a staff member. "I'm not sure how safe the kids will be. We'll have to come up with some plans right away."
"Yes, ma'am." the staff member said as Y/n made it to his room, to find Alison leaning on the wall.
"Hey...Y/n." Y/n didn't even look at her and walked in his room. Alison was hurt as she walked up to the door. "Hey! Y/n, are you okay?! Let..."
"Not today." Y/n closed the door and leaned his head on it. "I just...I can't today..."
Alison put her hand on the door, closing her eyes. The lights suddenly turned on as she nodded. "Alright... if you need to talk..."
"I know...I know..." Y/n softly said, losing his voice more and more. As soon as Y/n hears footsteps, he turned around and thought back to Peter's words. "A responsibility and a choice..."
Y/n started to dig through his suitcase to find his old blue, sleeveless hoodie. He looked to find some bike gear with gloves, pads, and shoes. Y/n looked outside. "I don't know what other choice I have." Y/n is seen buying a spider-man costume from a store and placing the money down on the counter. "This isn't a game, or some comic book anymore. The reality is... a duty is what I have now."
Y/n started to add bits and pieces from each part of the suit to his own, detailing the jacket. "I can no longer act like I can't do anything anymore, that costed me the protection and the peace of the city."
The night cycle passed as Y/n leaped from rooftop to rooftop in his homemade costume. "Because I did nothing, left the job to others, all this chaos and destruction happened. I didn't make the choice to do the right thing because of it was easy and safe to do so...not anymore."
"With great power, comes great responsibility..." Y/n said as he crouched over the city. His webs came out and made a ball in his hand. Y/n passed it from hand to hand. "Well, at least I'm not alone this time."
"Help!!" a voice in the distance rang out as car doors are seen being closed.
"Shut up! You, drive!" A man in a black ski mask pointed a gun at the driver and the drives stepped on the gas.
Y/n stood up in his costume, "alright, uh, we have not practiced web swinging! Damn it, we should've tried before we went off."
The web shot off into the distance as Y/n looked confused. "What are-WHOOOOOOAAAAA!!!"
The web pulled Y/n close to the building before dissolving. Y/n was going straight towards the ground. "AH!! WHAT THE HELL, WEB!! GOD OKAY, WORK, PLEASE WORK! GO! GO WEB! GO WEB GO!! UP UP AND AWAY! ABACADBRA!! FLY!!"
Y/n tried to breathe slowly, which it's self was very hard when you're falling to your doom. Y/n tried to look where he as going, although he was upside down, and aimed his hand at a building as the webs came out and pulled him upwards again. "Whoa! Careful!!!"
The webs waited for Y/n to aim again before shooting at the windows. He goes up into the air again and smiled, actually starting to enjoy himself. He ran up a building and dive off. He then did a couple backflips before the webs start swinging again. He ran up the side of a glass building to see the office workers confused at the new Spider-man. He then swung upside down as he gets closer to the street level. He then gets even lower to see the people and hears a little kid call out. "Cool! Look mommy! Another Spider-Man!"
Y/n chuckle and web the corners of two buildings to gain speed. He launches forward and lands on a rooftop. He parkour off of the vents and leap off the building. "Let's go!!"
He fled so much more...powerful when wearing the mask... like he could do anything. Maybe that's what it's like to wear a symbol. He dives down and then near his target, the speeding car. He then web swinged to gain more speed. "Whoooooohooooooooooo!"
Y/n landed on the car and his spider-sense went off, alerting him that a man was going to shoot him in the head from the left side of the car. Y/n didn't know whether to belive the image in his head was real or not, but he got on the hood of the roof. "Hey! Pull over!"
"Great, another bug!!" The man wins the gun outside the car to try and shoot at Y/n. He smirked and aimed his webs at the car.
"Well that's just hurtful! But I bet you were texting in there, weren't you?" Y/n said as he started to web up the front window. He then webbed spits of two buildings up ahead, which the webs then caught the tires.
"Gah-!!" The man said as the recoil slowed down the car. Meanwhile Y/n crawled on the back, the man quickly saw and aimed his gun to shoot.
"Oops, sorry, not today!" Y/n webbed his face before the webs themselves slammed him on the door handle. Y/n quickly webbed the man up in the car and looked at the driver. "Okay, stop the car."
The driver was scared as Y/n webbed his foot and stuck it on the brakes. The car stopped as Y/n offered his hand out to the lady. "Are you okay?"
"Y-Yes, thank you...are you a new Spider-Man? What do we call you?" The lady asked as Y/n looked at the police sirens.
"Uh, trademark still pending, gotta go!" Y/n says as he leaps in the air and the webs automatically take him in the air at high speeds. Y/n smiled as he started to freak out. "Okay, whoa! That was so cool! I stopped that car chase! Okay, to be honest I thought was gonna die, but I didn't! I could get—GAH!!"
Suddenly, Y/n was slammed into by a person as the two dropped to rooftop. Y/n held his side as the other figure showed up. "Ow! Ow! Man. Why does that hurt so much!"
"Kid, you should probably stop this whole 'fan super hero' thing. Okay, it's happened before, it's never good. And probably gets better suit." Ghost Spider said as she webbed Y/n's hands to the rooftop.
"Hey! I made this suit all by myself! Wait! Y-You're Ghost-Spider! Hey, wait, don't go! I need your help!" Y/n shouted as Ghost-Spider shook her head.
"I don't do the whole...teaching thing... and you are not capable of..." She said before she turned back around to see Y/n had gotten through the webs. "Wait no, how'd you get through the webs?"
"I'm like you!" Y/n said as he did a bunch of hand motions, as if to explain what's happening to him. "I was bit by this weird spider and now I got all these powers, which are cool, but very weird. Does your webbing come out of you too? Because I thought you guys used web shooters! But now the implications there are-MFM?!"
Gwen webbed his mouth as she held her forehead in confusion. "I need a bit of time to think, so shut it really quick. Why is this blue stuff here...?"
Gwen looked at the ground to see the blue webbing and Y/n's webs looked at Y/n and made it to his mouth. It made a web hand before it ripped off the webbing. Gwen's eyes went wide, "how the-?!"
"I told you, weird implications." Y/n said as Gwen sighed.
"Listen, just... stay back on this one, okay?" She asked him as Y/n clenched his fist. Gwen and him both knew he couldn't win in a fight between the two of them. "I'll track you down and... maybe with Spider-Man, we'll teach you some techniques. After the Tombstone issue is settled."
"Yeah, when we solve it." Y/n said as Gwen walked up to him and poked his chest.
"You're not listening." Gwen told him as Y/n moved her hand to the side.
"I am listening. But I can't sit on the side for this one! This is too important to me, and too important to this city! Tombstone isn't a threat that should be taken lightly, the more the merrier, right?" Y/n said as Gwen was hesitating. "You can just... teach me as I go! Right?"
Gwen suddenly senses something as a web latches onto the rooftop. "Did you know about this?"
"I had a feeling... looks like it was right." Spider-Man showed up and landed on the roof, everyone's spider sense went off to each other's. "Well, what's your take on it?"
"I think it's a horrible idea and we should wait till this is over." Gwen moves Peter to the side.
"I don't see the problem if we teach him as we go." Peter said as Gwen looked at him in disbelief.
"Peter, he's just a kid. Fighting a mafia crime lord as a start is never a good start to anything!" She says as Peter crossed his arms.
"Well, you're just a kid too. Besides, you were saying the other day that we could use another Spider-Man..." Peter said as Gwen sighed and looked at him.
"Where is all this coming from?" She asked him as he looked worried for a bit. "You're being way to relaxed on this, you're usually the one freaking out. It would've been nice to see this over protectiveness when I was being trained by you... just, don't let this get in the way of saving the city."
"Uh, I'm still back here." Y/n said as he started juggling web balls as the two looked at him. Peter looked at Gwen with a happy expression shown by the mask as Gwen was unamused.
"Sigh... come on, Spidey. Let's go get some lessons in." Gwen said as she webbed the side of the building, taking off. Peter looked at him and shrugged him a little.
"You'll get used to her sticky personality." He winked as he webbed away. Y/n smiled and looked at his webs, he then leaped off the building and tried to swing again as he launched in the air.
"AH, SHIT! PIGEON!"
"Ah, Ghost! He got part of the Spidey Bingo!"
"I'm gonna regret this so much..."
