The Hydra

Lanie's eyes shot open, for what reason she didn't know. She strained her ears for a disturbance. She heard a thump. She listened further. Thump"John" she hissed "John, Get Up!"

His eyes opened to the sight of a fearfully courageous woman dressing for the day. In the corner, a pair of kindergarteners snuggled each other, blissfully ignorant of the disturbance.

The parents ran onto the deck, swords drawn and shouting at the crew.

"Get Up!" Lanie yelled "It's a hydra!" The tired zombified crew slogged onto the main deck.

"Get moving if you value your lives!" John cried.

Lanie ducked into a corridor and grabbed a torch. John pried up loose boards. Lanie tossed the torch to the only alert crew member, which was Jack. Jack caught it with no effort and shielded the flame from the rain. John held up a pried-up board for Jack to light on fire. The first mate did so and passed the board to another crew member. Eventually, every second person had a flaming board and was involved in the dangerous game and dance of the hydra.

"Hey! .What's 'At?" a lookout yelled. Lanie glanced at her husband, then scaled the mast. Her hair clung to her face, her skirts finding their encumbering heritage. Still she climbed. Finally, she reached the crow's nest. She grabbed her spyglass and peered over the battle scene.

"A ship! There's a ship trailing us!" She screamed over the sound of the rain.

The hydra suddenly spat it's venom at the base of the mast Lanie was in. Lanie lept out of the falling mast, landing in her husband's waiting arms.

"There's a ship trailing us! We need to move!" she told him.

"We can't! Our mast is gone, the oars are broken off!"

"Whatever we do, we can't surrender." she pulled her hair over her shoulder as the rain began to clear. Lanie squeezed the water out of her hair. "Not on my life will I surrender."

"Get the kids. Hide."

Lanie calmly walked to the quarters where her family slept.

"Cordelia, Dylan, wake up!" she cooed at the children.

"Mommy, what's wrong?" Cordelia asked, rubbing her eyes.

"We need to hide," Lanie pushed aside the biggest bed, revealing a trapdoor. She slid the trapdoor open. "Move to the side once you get down."

The children each did what their mother requested. Lanie replaced the bed and slid the trapdoor into place. Cordelia stood on her tiptoes to reach a puzzle and brought it down. The kindergarteners began playing with the puzzle while their mother opened a less-than-secret closet and retrieved a disguise.

"You kids be good." She requested, donning her disguise. She opened another, more secret door and walked into the hold.
