Bunking
I lay awake in my bed for a really long time that night. I tried sleeping on my stomach, which didn't work. I didn't have any energy to go down to the kitchen and make myself a glass of milk like Nina had once suggested.
I didn't know what to do.
So, I did the only thing I could. I pulled my cloak from the wardrobe and walked in the direction of the tower. But I didn't go to the tower. I went towards the chambers of the person I shared it with.
After reaching the door, I was doubtful whether I should knock or not. Caspian and I had decided that we wouldn't meet each other at the tower because we had to travel to Galma in the morning. I didn't think that I should accompany him but he thought otherwise. "I cannot leave you here alone once again, not with the White Witch bag." He had told me.
I was supposed to be sleeping and I knew that he would be too. Should I knock? I shouldn't. Maybe I could go to the kitchen itself and help myself to a glass of milk. While I was thinking of what to do, the door in front of me opened and I got startled. "Woah!" I held onto my heart.
"I'm so sorry." He said. "I had a feeling you were outside."
"I....I apologise for waking you up."
"I wasn't sleeping." It felt like we were back in time to when I first realised that the tower was his spot. Both of us were still unsure of how to stop hiding our feelings for each other even though it was out. "Would you like to come in?"
"Thank you." I said. "I was hoping that we could talk."
"Of course." He smiled and opened the door wide.
I walked in, not knowing how the night was going to go forward. We should have just met up at the tower. "Why weren't you able to sleep?"
The owl in his room fluttered his wings as he saw me enter. I looked at him and smiled. "I was worried." He answered and I turned around.
"What were you worried about?" I asked, pulling myself a chair to sit on.
"I am not sure whether Galma can afford to give us more men to fight. I am worried whether a war will happen. I'm worried of how I'm going to protect our people. I'm worried whether you-"
He stopped in the middle of the sentence. "Go on." I insisted.
He looked at the floor and smiled. "I don't think I should. At least not now."
"Why not?" When were we going to tell each other what we wanted to hear?
"It's too soon."
"The timing's not right." I said, completing his sentence for him.
His eyes told me that he wanted to tell me all the wonders of the world and tell me everything that I wanted to tell him. But both of us knew that the timing wasn't right. And we weren't sure how to put it into words.
"I'm scared." I confessed. "I really am."
"Oh, Sophie." Caspian sat down in front of me. He took my hands in his and said, "As long as I am here, you don't have to be scared of anything."
I kissed him softly. "Thank you." I said, afterwards.
"Can we talk about something else?" He asked me. "Just to change the topic."
"All right." I nodded.
We sat down on his bed and started talking about our favourite things. We knew almost everything about each other but you can never really get to know about someone completely, right? "Between ice-cream and you, I think you might be my favourite."
"Ice-cream?" He asked. "What is that?"
"How do I put this?" I thought about it. As always, I tapped my chin with one finger. "It is a cold dessert made of milk."
"We must make it one day. I need to see who my competition is."
I didn't know how it happened, but I found myself asleep on his shoulder the next morning. I looked up at him sleeping, his hair falling on my face. He looked so peaceful when he slept.
I turned my head and looked at the time. It was around five in the morning. We were supposed to be leaving in an hour. I didn't want to get up and wake him up in doing so. He looked so peaceful while sleeping. He looked calm and I was reminded of how much I.....not yet.
I turned my head sideways and Caspian took a deep breath. "Hey." I said as I woke up.
He looked at me, realising what had happened. "Good morning."
"I'm sorry. I don't know when I fell asleep." I got off the bed and Cassie started circling around me. Caspian took her in the previous night. We were so busy with everything that we almost forgot about our dog.
"I don't remember as well."
It was a little weird then. We had never spent the entire night together. I was sure that we were thinking about the same problem - what would the members of the castle think.
Cassie barked at me. She was hungry. "We should get ready." I said, breaking our train of thoughts. It shouldn't matter what everyone thought. Caspian and I were together and nobody could change that. At least, I wished so.
"We should."
How was it that we could talk for four hours straight as well as not know what to talk about at certain times? "I'll get her breakfast." I said as I headed for the door.
"I'll meet you at the port."
I rushed to my room while making sure not to bump into anyone. My head was hurting a little bit. Cassie followed me around, waving her tail left and right. She was looking at me but I didn't know what to do. I got dressed and we went to the kitchen to have breakfast.
"Good morning!" Evelyn said.
"Morning."
"Breakfast?"
"Yes, please." I smiled.
"Your bag has been taken down, Sophie." Nina told me. "All you need to do is get ready. I will make sure to pack you some toast to eat on the journey."
"Thank you, Nina."
Oliver came inside with a crate of tomatoes. He stopped when he saw me. He nodded at me and I returned it back. People were still not used to who I was but I decided to ignore it. "Let's go." I told Cassie and we made our way to the port.
