Chapter 4- Ali
The Commander lead Will and I to the front door of the house. Nick was still knocked out cold in the truck because Will sensibly said that he'd go ballistic if he knew where we were. A soldier called Peters was there with him. The house itself was in the middle of nowhere, but then again, this guy didn't like people.
Will stepped forward and knocked on the door loudly. "He'd better answer," the Commander muttered. I swallowed hard.
Just then, the door flung open and the craziest guy I've ever met stood in the threshold.
"Uncle Cain," Will said, trying to keep his expression calm. "We need your help." Uncle Cain took one look at us then slammed the door in Will's face.
"Told you he was insane," I said. The Commander gave me a look then knocked on the door again. Cain answered again but raised an eyebrow, giving us all a death look.
"Cain, hello again," the Commander said. "It has been a while, hasn't it?" Cain brought up his hands and started signing very fast. I remember dad telling me that Cain used to write on a notepad to communicate, but he had obviously learnt sign language since then. After al, having your tongue cut out must be a pain.
The Commander blinked in confusion and I noticed Will smirk.
"He says that we should all go away and leave him alone because he is not getting involved in another war," Will translated. "Oh, and that's with all the swearing removed." Cain looked at him in surprise.
"Yeah, I know sign language," he said with a shrug. "I learnt last year."
"Could have told me that," I mumbled.
"You didn't ask," Will said. I bit my lip.
"Can we please come in, Uncle Cain?" Will asked. "We really need your help." Cain stood there for a moment, staring at us. Eventually, he rolled his eyes and gestured impatiently for us to come in. Will went first, followed by me then the Commander who ordered the soldier in the car to bring Nick inside too.
Inside the house was messy. Really messy. The living room was covered in sheets of paper and files that looked rather important, considering that they had the New Government's logo printed on them.
"Where did you get all these from?" Will asked. I could see the glint in his eyes at the prospect of a puzzle. Cain gave him a look that said: none of your business. He then signed something else.
"He wants to know why we're here," Will said, but he looked distracted. I could see the wheels turning in his head. He was worried about something. I could tell.
"I take it you watched the meeting today?" The Commander asked, pushing off a couple of files from the couch and perching on it. Cain nodded. "Well then, you'll know that their parents were kidnapped." Another nod. "We need your help to find them and stop Revenge."
Will wondered around the room, stepping over files as he paced. What was up with him? "He is asking what's in it for him," Will translated. There was definitely something on his mind.
"Maybe to go back to civilisation?" I said sarcastically. The Commander sighed at me.
"I can arrange some sort of payment, if you so wish," she said. "But I was hoping that you'd help these kids out of the goodness of your heart." Cain gave her a crooked grin and I knew that someone like him did nothing out of the goodness of their hearts. He held out his hand to the Commander who shook it.
"Good, we have a deal," she said. "Now, looking around here, I can already see that you have already been doing some research. You know who Revenge is, don't you?" He shook his head but picked up another file, shoving it into my hands. He gestured for me to open it so I did.
"What is this?" I asked.
"That, my dear, is a list of every Changed in the world," the Commander said. "We registered them all and their powers, much like the police register fingerprints."
"The police only register criminal fingerprints," I pointed out.
"This was not meant to register criminals," the Commander explained. "After the peace, everybody who was Changed sighed this to say that they would never use their powers against other Changed and humans. I would like to know where Cain acquired a document of this importance."
"Okay, why do you have it?" I asked Cain. "Why is this important?" He made a growl of frustration and turned me to the right page, the last one which was hand written, probably not part of the original document. I scanned through it.
"These are family names," I said. As I read further down, I got to the last name on the list:
Edward Halister.
"That's dad!" I cried. "What is this? Are you accusing my dad of kidnapping himself?" Cain rolled his eyes and shook his head. He took the paper from me and grabbed a pen from his pocket, scribbling what he wanted to say:
List of people Frost experimented extensively on.
"I already knew this," I said. "We don't know the whole story, but we know that he went through something terrible."
"You got this list from the old government archives," the Commander said. "You hacked in." Cain nodded and circled a name at the top of the list.
"V.E. Regne?" I asked. "Who the hell is V.E. Regne?"
"Anagram," Will piped up suddenly, still pacing. "V.E. Regne? That's an anagram for revenge. The Revenge."
"That's who Revenge is?" I asked. "But why would he want to continue Frost's work if he was tortured? Surely he would hate the guy. And he said he made himself Changed in order to fight us, so he was human before."
"He was one of the leaders in the experiments," Will murmured. He was more talking to himself than anyone else. "He was Frost's friend, his college. He helped to draw powers from Changed, including Dad. But all experiments need a control, someone to compare. He must have been the human control."
"You're not making any sense, Will," I said but Cain was nodding, scribbling everything Will said down on the paper.
"But we brought everyone who helped Frost to justice," the Commander said. "I made sure of it."
"Not everyone," Will muttered. "Some escaped, and this guy was never a major part. You would have over looked him. But he obviously admired Frost. Maybe because...because someone he loved was killed by Changed, that's why he wants us all destroyed."
"How did you get all of that from a name?" I asked.
"Because one of my history projects was looking into the old government experiments," Will said. He was started to wear the carpet out from all the pacing. "Aunt Tess was helping me. V.E. Regne came up once, but only once. He was top secret. Nobody knew him. If Aunt Tess couldn't find anything on him, I doubt he was on any records. That's why you never caught him, Commander."
"But he would have needed help," I said. "No way could he have got into the meeting without help. His powers would have gained too much attention."
"Uncle Cain," Will said. "Have you crossed checked everyone on that list with the Changed register? Just because Dad was Changed, doesn't mean they all are." Cain started flipping through the final, a frown increasing on his lips. He shook his head.
"They were all human," Will said. "That means, apart from Dad, they were all part of the control group, and were probably scientists working on the power weapons."
"William, will you please stop pacing!" The Commander exclaimed. "You're doing my head in!" Will suddenly stopped, his mouth parting in shock.
"They could be anyone because no one knew who they were apart from Frost, who created that list," he whispered. "Oh god. Oh no."
"What is it Will?" I asked. "What have you figured out?"
"Has anyone else noticed it's been exactly ten minutes and twenty-two seconds since the Commander gave the order to that soldier to bring Nick inside?"
