Chapter 3- Will

"This is your grandma?" I asked.

"Yes, William, I think we've established that," Commander Palmer said.

"This is Uncle Caleb's mum?" I said, my mouth wide open.

"Please close your mouth before you catch flies, William," Commander Palmer ordered. "You would think with your intelligence that you would have worked out that I am Caleb's mother." I abruptly shut my mouth up.

"How come we've never seen you before?" Ali asked, crossing her arms. "Where have you been all these years?"

"Ali, don't," Nick said through gritted teeth.

"No," Ali said. "I want to know. She's the closest thing we have to a grandparent. I want to know where she has been and why we never met her."

"Because the simple family life wasn't good enough for her," Nick said, glaring at Commander Palmer. "She couldn't live without a war. Getting rid of Frost wasn't good enough for her. She wanted to bring every man who ever made contact with Frost down."

"Nicolas," the Commander sighed.

"No, grandma," Nick said. "You know what you did. If it wasn't for my father, you could have gone on a rampage. You're lucky you are even leading the army."

"You're just as annoying as the man who you were named after," the Commander muttered. Nick took a step forward, his gaze full of rage.

"Nick Garland was a hero," he said.

"I never doubted that," she said. Nick stepped back again.

"Come on, guys," he said. "Let's get out of here. We need to find our parents."

"I'm afraid I can't let you do that, Nicolas," Commander Palmer said.

"And who are you to stop me?" Nick argued. He started storming off but two soldiers got in his way and stopped him. "Get out of my way," Nick growled, his eyes turning pure white and lightning crackling in his palms.

"Nick," I said. "Please don't electrocute them. It might be rather awkward."

"Listen to your cousin, Nicolas," Commander Palmer said.

"Don't call me that!" Nick shouted. "That is not my name!" I walked up to Nick carefully, keeping my distance from the electricity in his palms.

"Nick," I said. "She's probably our best chance of getting our parents back. Be smart about this. We're just kids. We can't do this alone. We are not our parents."

"I am not going with the woman who was never there for me," Nick said angrily. I sighed.

"Sorry, Nick," I said then snapped my fingers. Nick's eyes rolled back and he collapsed onto the soldiers.

"Will!" Ali shrieked.

"Commander Palmer has a whole army at her disposal," I said to her. "It's the smart thing to do."

"But not the right thing!" Ali said. "And don't you dare knock me out too."

"Are you going to put up a fight?" Ali looked at me carefully. I willed her to understand my plan. Ali always understood when I had an idea.

"No," she said slowly. "You're right, we should go with Commander Palmer." I breathed a sigh with relief. She understood, thank God.

Commander Palmer smiled and started giving orders to the soldiers who were apparently watching our little exchange. She lead Ali and I to a truck, Nick just behind us being carried in a soldier's arms. We jumped in, Commander Palmer sitting opposite us and Nick next to her.

"Where are you going to take us?" Ali asked. "To a government facility?" Before Commander Palmer could answer, I interrupted.

"No, Ali," I said, looking out the window. "They wouldn't take us anywhere near one. We're wanted now. The government would be the first place this guy, Revenge or whatever he's called, would look for us." Commander Palmer laughed.

"I knew you were intelligent," she said. "I didn't know you were that intelligent." The truck engine started and we moved forward, a convey of trucks behind us. The Commander took out a radio.

"All right boys, everyone back to base," she said. "I'll take the kids to a safe house. Under no circumstances does anyone leave the base without my authority." The radio crackled in reply. I felt the truck turn off onto a bumpy dirt track while the ones behind us carried on down the tarmac road through town.

Nick rocked back and forth on the seat, his face scrunched up like he was concentrating deeply. I knew it was just a bad dream, one of my own bad dreams actually. When I knock people out, I can't always control what they dream. A lot of the time, they were dreaming my own nightmares.

"So, I need a run down on your powers," the Commander said. "I need to know what you can do so I know if you can defend yourselves if there is trouble." Ali looked at me, her eyes as hard as steel.

"We don't need to tell you anything," she said. "Will might want to play nice but I'm not going to."

"God, you are just like my daughter in law," the Commander sighed. "Stubborn, feisty and, quite frankly, annoying. All right then, missy. I'll play your game." She moved to her right side towards the door's pocket. When she came back up again, Will saw three brown folders in her hand. She gave Ali a glare then opened one of the folders.

"'Alison April Halister,'" she read. "'Fifteen years old. Predicted grades: seven A's and three B's. Powers: the ability to manipulate and control water. Often found at Greenstone park three miles from her house and at Chalk Beach and cove. Loves reading and writing and has recently submitted one of her stories into a writing competition.'" I watched Ali carefully.

"I-I haven't even told mum and dad that yet," she whispered. "How did you know?" The Commander ignored her and faced me.

"'William Cain Halister. Thirteen years old. Predicted grades with extra qualifications added: 10 A*'s and five A's. Powers: the ability to create and maintain a magnetic field capable of containing any sort of matter. Also, the ability to connect his mind to others but is unknown whether or not he can control the actions of these other people. Often found in the local library. Loves solving puzzles, especially tricky ones.'" Ali was in a stunned silence.

"So you've been keeping tabs on us," I said, sitting back. "I thought those people in the library the other day looked suspicious. Let me guess, you know everything about Nick as well."

"Of course I do," she said, putting the folders away. "He is my grandson."

"I don't think you have the right to call him that," Ali muttered. I squeezed her hand in a warning.

"Can you at least tell us where this 'safe house' is?" I asked.

"With an old friend of your parents'," the Commander said quietly. "Although I doubt he'll be pleased to see us."

"It better not be who I think it is," I said. The Commander looked at me.

"I'm afraid it is," she said. "He's the only one who we can trust in a situation like this."

"You do realise the last time he saw us at my eighth birthday party, he basically set fire to the house," I pointed out. "If you've been watching us, I'm surprised you don't know that."

"I do know that," she said. "I'm just choosing to ignore that fact." I laughed and shook my head.

"Nick was right," I said. "You are insane."

"I'll take that as a compliment."

"Can someone please tell me who you're talking about?" Ali cried. I looked at her.

"Who do you think?" I asked. "The one person in our family crazy enough to set fire to a house." Ali's eyes widened.

"Oh no," she said. "There is no way I am going to him."

Hello everyone!

I have finally updated! Yay! I am so sorry but I had major writer's block so I made a fanfiction and another original story and kind of forgot about this.

But I have remembered! But again I am sorry.

Who do you think they are going to see? If you know the first book then I hope you will guess.

Anyways, vote and comment as always.

Love y'all!
