Happiness (3)

“What is it, darling?”  Rose asked as she too placed her teacup down.

“I would like to go to medical school and follow the footsteps of by family.”  Elise told.

The determined look on her face made the two men look at each other first with worry, then with understanding.  Now, with no direction in her life, she would need to do something that would not only occupy her time, but also bring meaning to her life.

“Alright.”  Derek said as he agreed.  “We can send you to medical school in the capital city, Qiria, but you must come home during your break and write us letters to know of your welfare.”

“Thank you.”  Elise said as she forced a smile at them.  “I’ll do my best at medical school and ensure that I do not bring shame on the Devereux name or Sweeny name.”

Raine left the three alone and went up to her room to rest.  It would take at least a week for Derek to write a recommendation letter and enroll her in medical school.  It would also take another week to travel to the capital city, and a few days to settle her into one of the Devereux’s estate in the capital and buy supplies for school.  Knowing the Devereux’s, they would send maids, servants and guards for Elise’s every comfort and protection.

Raine entered her room and saw that it was a shared room with Axel.  Every place in the room, had Axel’s imprint on it, from his clothes, to his knick knacks, to his weapons.  Everything inside of the room, held a trace of him, while her belongings were still in chests.

“Odette?”  Raine asked as she stopped in the middle of the room.

“Yes, m’lady?”  Odette asked as she waited by the door.

“Is the room across from here occupied?”

“No, m’lady”

“Have people help you bring my things into the other room.”  Raine said as she turns around and walks into her new room. “I refuse to sleep where I am not welcomed.”

Odette had a look of uncertainty.  Although the Devereux’s recognized Elise as their new Young Lady, Young Lord Axel did not.  As Odette sent another maid to go tell the Lady Rose, Odette began to move Elise’s belongings into the room across from Young Lord Axel’s room.

The maid came back with two men and just gave a nod to Odette, letting her know that Lady Rose gave permission for the move.

Once inside of her new room, Raine looked around the room, checking out the bathing room, how hard the bed was and stopped when she passed her own reflection.  The mirror that hanged on the wall showed a reflection of a young woman, not even 20 years old. Elise was tall, fit and had a mysterious look to her. She had violet hair, not just any violet, but a pastel violet with gold eyes that hid her emotions.  Other than her hair and eyes, her features were quite plain.

“Scam System, why do I have violet hair?”  Raine asked as she brushed her pastel hair back away from her shoulders.

[This is a fantasy western novel.  Anyone can have any color of hair and eyes.]

“Do they have magic here?”

[Yes, however only very strong individuals, known as Keepers, can use magic.  Keepers usually keep to themselves, preferring to live a hermit lifestyle and only coming out to save the world from The Soulless.

The Soulless are ghoul-like creatures unleashed into the world by the Demons every 10 years.  Once The Soulless are defeated, the Demons have to wait another 10 years for the two realms of humanity and demons to align for them to send more Soulless to take over the world.

At the beginning of this year, all forces were ready to face The Soulless invasion and the creatures were easily defeated within six months.

And every time The Soulless are defeated, there is a surplus of men and women who join the army, in hopes of fighting and protecting the realm from The Soulless.]

“That information would have been useful when I asked for the ‘Last Dying Request’.”  Raine said as she went to the window and stared out from it as the maids and servants brings her belongings into her room and begin to unpack it.

[Yes, well Elise’s ‘Last Dying Request’ does not involve the Keepers or The Soulless, so of course there would be no mention of them.]

“Had I not asked if this world has magic or not, would you have told me about this very important backstory to this transmigration mission?”

[...............]

“I thought that with your new upgrades, you said that you would now be able to act on your own to ensure my success in the missions.  Have you thought that by holding back information on this world, it could cause me to fail or succeed this mission? How would I be able to plan for this mission without all the necessary information?”

[...............]

“From now on, you are to tell me the backstory to all future missions, I don’t care you think the information is not relevant to the mission or not.  I need to know, got it?”

[Got it……………………………..  Raine………...]

“What is it?”  Raine sighed heavily as she stared down at the guards practicing.  She could feel a headache forming.

[Then I think it is the best time for me to tell you about the System Market Place.]

“The what!” Raine almost shouted as she looked up to the sky for patience.

[System Market Place, a one stop shop for all of Host’s needs.  From weapons, animals, mystical animals, clothes, armor, enchanted items, vehicle of transportation, aerospace transportation…. you name it, the System Market Place has it…...]

Scam System voice slowly became softer and softer until it just stopped talking.  It could feel it’s host’s anger radiate off of her. Her eyes held a death glare that reflected in the window and it shivered thankfully that it did not transform into an animal.

“You’ve been holding back on me about this System Market Place all along?”

[Yes?]

“Don’t say your answer is if you did this on accident!  Did you ever think that telling me about this System Market Place it would have been tantamount information to the success of my missions when you were still at factory settings?”

[You would have know about the System Market Place, had you read the Terms and Agreement Policy.  Or would you like me to remind you which Article, page and paragraph?]

“You say you want me, as your Host, to succeed my missions and yet, you leave out so much information that could help me.  Instead, by using my Soul Force Points to upgrade your system, you begin to receive more freewill to make your own choices to ensure my success and yet, you’re still holding important information back from me.  Why is that? Is it because you want me to invest more Soul Force Points into you so you can become a more powerful system? Instead of me spending my Soul Force Points in the System Market Place, where I’m sure the Points would go straight to Headquarters instead of you.”

[....................]

“What? Now you don’t know how to speak?”  Raine argued with her system as she closed her eyes.  “Don’t even want to defend yourself now that I’ve seen through your scheme?  And when I try to suggest for you to hack into Headquarters and upgrade yourself behind a virus, you want to pretend that you’re an innocent system that only follows Headquarters Rules?!?”

[.................]

After a long time of silence, Raine was able to reign in her anger and calm herself.

“Let me see what’s in the System Market Place.”

A transparent screen opened before Raine’s eyes and the items were listed by groups.  Raine looked through the items and stopped at the magic items. She stopped at the magic pouch that would could only be seen and opened by the host.  The magic pouch, for 2,5000 Soul Force Points could carry 3 tons of weight and yet feel light as a feather. There was also a magic potion that could make a Host recall everything that they see for also 2,500 Soul Force Points.

“How long does the magic potion lasts?”

[Magic potions lasts as long as the mission.  Once the mission is over, Host will no longer have the ability of that potion……. Are you still mad at me??]

“Shut it!”  Raine said as she looked through the magic items again before settling down on her decision.  “The magic pouch and Potion of Perfect Eidetic Memory.”

[Please confirm, Level 1: Magic Pouch and Potion of Perfect Eidetic Memory for a total of 5,000 Soul Force Points.  Yes/ No]

“Yes.”

Suddenly one of her hand held a leather pouch with two long leather strings, it was the size of her palm.  And her other hand held a vial with orange liquid. Raine squeezed her fists and looked out the window again letting the silence between her and her Scam System surround them.  The only noise was the maids speaking quietly as they put Elise’s things away.

[You’re right. I am a scam system. I didn’t tell you about the System Market Place, because I wanted you to spend your Soul Force Points on my upgrades.  At the moment, I’m not strong enough to hack into Headquarters and upgrade myself as you have suggested, without getting caught. I’m sorry, I won’t keep anything from you again.  Just... don’t ignore me. Please.]

“Spend 30,000 Soul Force Points to upgrade your system.”  Raine sighed loudly as she looked at the transparent sphere above her head.  “You better hack into Headquarters after this, you hear?!?”

[Really?!?  Are you sure?]

“Will you have enough power and skills to hack into Headquarters or not?”

[I will!  I will!] The transparent sphere moved up and down as if it was nodding its head.

“Then take 30,000 Soul Force Points to upgrade yourself.”  Raine told her Scam System. “In the end, you and me, we’re in this together.  Besides it’s only Soul Force Points. I can always earn them back with each mission.”

[.........................Thank you………. Scam System doesn’t know what to say…  I promise, I will never hold back any information, big or small, from you again.  I promise to be the best system for you and will do everything in my powers to ensure your success in every mission.  I swear to you.]

“Don’t get caught.”  Raine scolded her Scam System as she leaned her forehead on the window.  “And don’t get so sentimental with me, it’s off putting.”

[....... I love you too, Host!  I’ll be careful and won’t get caught!]

The transparent sphere dance around her head in circles several times before disappearing.

[System upgrading….. please wait….]
