Chapter Twenty Eight

I was so glad when the weekend finally came around. Sophia and Layla and Kiley kept me sane at school, and I was so grateful for them. However, I was more comfortable at home with Mom and Dad. They wouldn't talk about Beckett the whole time, and they would give me helpful updates. Especially Mom, who checked on him every single day.

I pulled into the driveway at my house and shut my car off. The fast food bag sat on the passenger seat, so I wrapped my fingers around it and hopped out of my car. Slinging my backpack over my shoulder, I headed inside my house.

"I'm home!" I yelled after throwing my backpack on the ground.

"We're upstairs!" Mom answered. "We have a surprise for you."

I frowned and set the fast food bag on the table next to the door. Excited chatters rose from upstairs. I had no idea what they had planned, but it sounded strange. I hesitantly stepped onto the first stair just as Dad said, "Hurry up, Cat!"

With a groan, I ran up the rest of the stairs. When I made it up there, I glanced around the landing. Mom and Dad's door was slightly ajar, but it didn't sound like they were in there. My room was shut, so I turned toward Beckett's room. Light spilled out into the hallway from his open doorway.

"Why are you guys in Beckett's room?" I asked, stepping over there. "It's not like -" My voice stopped when I saw Beckett laying in his bed. One of his legs was in a white cast, a stark contrast to his dark bedspread. He looked so thin. "Beckett!"

I started to throw myself at him, but I stumbled to a stop. "You can hug me," he said with a roll of his eyes. "Just gently. Please."

I gently wrapped my arms around his body. His bones poked through the skin, and I tried to ignore it. I was just glad he was alive. Tears stung my eyes as I held him. He was my little brother. I loved him so much, but I didn't think I ever really told him that.

"Cat, you can let go now," he said, his voice soft.

"Not yet."

I held him tight for a few more seconds. Pulling away from him, I wiped my tears out of my eyes. "Are you feeling okay?" I asked him.

"I'm feeling fine," he answered.

I stared at him and let out a sigh of relief. His cheeks were slightly sunken in, but he had a glow to him that he never used to have. His eyes shone as he gazed at the three of us.

"Are you tired?" Mom asked him. She straightened the blankets at the end of his bed even though they were already straight. "We can let you rest if you would like."

"No, I'm fine," he said with a nod. "I'm hungry, though."

"I brought home some burgers," I said, gesturing to the stairs. "Do you want me to get it?"

"Yes!" Beckett said enthusiastically. "You have no idea how much I want a burger right now. The food the hospital gave me sucked."

I laughed. It felt so good to hear him say that. I turned on my heel and exited his room. "I'll come with you," Mom said, stepping next to me.

"Okay." We walked down the stairs together. I grabbed the fast food bag and said, "Do you want to grab anything else before we go back upstairs?"

"Yeah."

She disappeared into the kitchen, so I waited for her. I couldn't keep the smile off of my face. Happiness flooded through my body. I was so glad that Beckett was fine. I didn't know how I could live without him. I watched him grow into the man he was becoming, and I didn't want it to be cut short because of some reckless driver.

"Okay, I'm ready now," Mom said, appearing next to me. She had a bag of chips and dip in her hands. I nodded to her.

"I'm so glad he's okay," I said softly to her as we started climbing the stairs.

"Me too," she breathed out. "You have no idea how thankful I am. God really blessed us."

I blinked away the tears and nodded. My throat burned, but I still smiled. "Yes, He truly has."

When we walked into Beckett's room, he reached out his arms toward me greedily. He snapped his fingers at me, and I laughed. "Calm down, man," I said, setting the bag down on his bed. I dug through it and grabbed a burger. "Here you go, you little gremlin."

"You haven't called me that in years," he said as he took the burger from me. "Why couldn't it stay in the past?"

He still smiled at me. However, the smile dropped when he started eating. His eyes rolled back in his head as he let out a soft groan. "This is the best burger I've ever had," he said in between bites.

"Do you want chips?" Mom asked him.

"After I finish this." He spoke with his mouth full of burger. I gagged at the sight.

"Mom, you seriously aren't going to punish him for doing that?" I asked her. "You scolded me for doing that once!"

She smiled at me. "Cat, he's my baby boy. He can do no wrong!"

"Yeah, you hear that, Cat? I'm perfect!" Beckett chimed in.

"Didn't we have a similar conversation a month ago?" Dad asked with a chuckle. "Neither of you are perfect, but each of your flaws makes me love you even more."

"Aw, thanks, Dad," I said, wrapping one of my arms around him. He squeezed my shoulder. "I love you all so much."

Mom wrapped her arm around me, and we took our hug over to Beckett. He muttered something about how we were suffocating him, so we loosened our grips on  him. It felt so good to have him here, safe and sound.
