Chapter Nineteen
My first day back to school after missing three days was exciting. I honestly loved school, and I missed it while I was sick. I had already stopped by all of my classes to see what I missed, and I was walking around the halls with Sophia.
"So, have you spoken to Harvey since you found out your real feelings for him?" she asked.
"Could you say that a little louder?" I hissed, dragging her toward a less populated area. "I want everyone to know, right?"
She laughed, rolling her eyes. "Sorry." I was silent for a second so she said, "Well? Tell me."
"No," I admitted. "I haven't spoken to him since I found out."
"Why?"
I didn't want to meet her eyes. I had never been scared of taking chances with boys. But now I was terrified. "I don't want to ruin our friendship," I said softly. "If it doesn't work out, it would be very awkward. My biggest fear is that I would lose him forever."
"Lose who forever?"
I yelped in surprise and whirled around. Harvey stood in front of me with a large grin on his face. My heart sped up as he reached out to me. His arms went around my shoulders, so I hastily wrapped mine around his waist. He held me gently, like I was fragile.
"Nothing," I said, tearing away from him. I retreated closer to Sophia, and thankfully she didn't say anything to him. She pressed her lips together and gave me a look. Harvey noticed the look.
"What do you two know that I don't?" he asked, pointing at the two of us.
"Nothing," I repeated. I really wanted to run away from him. It was hard to keep my feelings at bay. I was usually very upfront about my feelings. However, I had to forget about them.
Harvey looked hurt that I wouldn't tell him something. A frown rose on his face before being replaced by his signature smile. Something flashed in his eyes, and I wanted to tell him. I opened my mouth, to say something, when Sammy came strolling toward him. A smirk flashed on her face when she saw me.
"Hi, Harvey," she said, wrapping her hands around his arm. He jerked toward her in surprise, but his eyes flicked back to me. "Hi Cat. Sophia."
Sophia tensed up next to me. I glanced at her and remembered that Sammy and Sophia were on cheerleaders together in freshmen year. They hated each other because Sammy thought she was so much better than Sophia was.
"We should probably go," I said, pointing in the opposite direction of them. "We have to go talk to one of Sophia's teachers. Bye!"
I pulled Sophia away from them before she could hurt someone. She let out an angry breath before saying, "Are you really going to let her steal your man?"
"He's not really mine," I said, shrugging. "We're not together, remember?"
She shook her head. "That doesn't matter. He obviously feels the same way about you."
"That's what Margaret said," I told her. "But I don't see it."
"Everyone knows you two have feelings besides you two."
I didn't say anything to her. I didn't want to believe her because I was terrified. This felt real, realer than anything else I had ever been in. I knew him. I knew who he was and who he wanted to be. And I wanted to be there for that, but not as a friend. I wanted to be romantically involved with him.
People flooded through the doors as the ten minute bell rang. I didn't understand how people could come into the building with five minutes left. I usually came early because of weights, so I was used to that. Through the crowd, I spotted Harvey, so I pulled Sophia in a different direction.
"Cat, you shouldn't be scared," she said. "He's Harvey. Even if he doesn't have romantic feelings for you, he'd still want to be your best friend. You guys are two peas in a pod."
"But how am I supposed to be around him if he doesn't feel the same way?" I asked.
She shrugged. "I have no idea. You would just ignore it."
"I wish you didn't help me realize that I had feelings for him," I said sadly. "I would have been fine without knowing."
"You wouldn't have been happy."
"I know."
Sophia split away from me, saying, "I should get to class. See you later!"
I waved before turning on my heel. Many of the people had cleared up, but I still took my time making my way over to the office. Someone tapped me on the shoulder, and I glanced up to see Chris. I smiled. "What're you doing?" I asked.
"Checking in on you," he replied. "How are you feeling?"
"Much better, thank you," I said, nodding. "I still feel a little weak, but I'm much better."
"That's good to hear." He was silent for a second before saying, "Oh, hey! Harvey!"
My heart sped up at the sound of his name. I glanced around and saw him making his way over to us. My feet picked up pace, and I hurried away from them. Scurrying behind another wall, I peeked around. Harvey looked a little upset as he talked to Chris.
"She's been acting strange today," Harvey said, his voice echoing around us. "Is it something I did?"
"Man, I don't know," Chris said, laughing. "I just saw her. She didn't say anything to me about it."
I wished I told Harvey. I was about to when Sammy came. However, it seemed like he was with her, and I was sort of with Nick. What would he think? He already didn't trust Harvey. And I did tell him that he didn't have to worry about him, either. How wrong I was back then.
"I have to go," Harvey said with a sigh. "I'll talk to you later. Tell me if you find out anything."
"You got it."
I stepped out of my hiding spot, and Chris looked at me. He didn't look confused like I thought he would. "Thanks for not telling him where I was," I said.
"You haven't told him yet?" he asked. My eyes went wide, and he laughed. "Sophia told me everything. Don't worry. I won't tell him."
"I told her not to tell anyone!"
Chris laughed harder, slapping my shoulder with his hand. I stumbled and caught myself on the wall. "She only told me," he explained.
"Why?"
"She accidentally let it slip."
"That's why I can't tell her anything. She'll let anything slip."
The bell rang, signalling one minute before class started. He started walking away, and he called over his shoulder, "You really should tell him! You'll be surprised by his answer."
"I'll try," I replied. I headed toward the office and sighed. Quieter this time, I said, "I'll try."
