Chapter III

After witnessing Stork kill the Colonel and his men, Dove carried the unconscious Stork back in the Windmill. As she sets Stork up on a table and begins addressing his wounds. As she does so, Dove saw the Merb's body covered in countless scars. She glanced over to the weapons Stork had used during his fight with Warden Moss and his men. They were all the weapons used by the Storm Hawks. While addressing his wounds, Stork began muttering to himself.

Stork: My fault....my fault.....

Upon hearing this, Dove began to wonder what happened to the Storm Hawks. She knew that at some point through the Sky Knight Purge, the Storm Hawks were killed. To see Stork alive was a shock to her. She knew Stork as someone who was paranoid of everyone and everything that could potentially harm him. To see Stork fight like he did was another shock.

Dove: What happened to you?

As Dove asked that question, she continued to address his wounds. Meanwhile, the older and broken Stork found himself in a black void. He drops to his knees as he laments his situation.

Stork: My fault....my fault....

As Stork tells himself that, he finds himself surrounded by visions of the rest of the Storm Hawks. They were all bloodied.

Aerrow: Why did you hide?

Piper: Why did you run away?

Finn: You could've saved us.

Junko: You could've done something.

Aerrow/Piper/Finn/Junko: Why did you let us die? Did we mean nothing to you?

Stork: No...no.....

Seeing his fallen teammates like that terrified Stork. It made him relive that day. The day the Storm Hawks died.

Aerrow/Piper/Finn/Junko: We're dead because of you. Because....of.....YOU!

In that moment, Stork fell into a pit of despair as he suddenly woke up in the Windmill. He looked to his right to see Dove bandaging him up.

Dove: It's okay. You're safe.

Stork said nothing as he attempts to get up. Both Dove and the pain from his injury prevented him from doing so. He simply laid on his back and looked at the ceiling. Dove paused as she glanced over to Stork. It was clear to her that there was something different about Stork.

Dove: Thank you. I don't know how long I would've lasted against Warden Moss and his men.

Stork once more said nothing as he continued looking at the ceiling. He glanced over to Dove and looked at her with sunken eyes.

Stork: You shouldn't thank me. I should be dead. They're all gone. Gone....

Dove: You mean the Storm Hawks?

Stork: I failed them. They're all gone...except me. I'm all that's left. Still alive to carry on the fight. A fight for a war that's long since gone......

In that moment, Dove could see that something happened to him. Something broke him in a way she couldn't understand.

Stork: Everything that was asked of us - we've done. Every night we lay in a filthy foxhole - prayin' the enemy won't slit our throats. Every day we spent crawling through the mud and the dirt while the enemy attacked.

Dove: My Grandpapa once said that the battle is only over when the fighter loses the will to fight.

Stork: Wren....where is he?

Dove: Dead. He and the rest of the Rebel Ducks were slaughtered when the Cyclonians attacked ten years ago. I was the only one who survived.

Stork looked around at the Windmill. He remembered his various encounters with Wren. He was a fierce old man with a fighting spirit. While it saddened the Merb to hear that he died, it did not surprise him in the slightest.

Stork: You know Terra Merbia is filled with thousands of natural disasters that seem to be taking place at any given point. Finn always joked about how miserable it was to live there, but it was "better than living at Terra Cyclonia" as he put it. But looking on Atmos now, it seems that the World of a Thousand Terras has become just like Terra Merbia. Everything that can go wrong has gone wrong. The Storm Hawks are dead. The Sky Knights are all but wiped out. Atmos is all under the control of the Cyclonian Empire.

Dove: It sounds like you've given up.

Stork said nothing in response to Dove's words.

Dove: What happened to the Condor?

Stork: Destroyed. It's wreckage is in the Wastelands. It's still my home.....

Dove remembered how attached Stork was to the Condor. He had felt more at home in the Condor than anywhere else to the point that he dislikes leaving it if at all possible. It was also where he retreats to at the first opportunity. To hear that the Condor had been destroyed saddened Dove. But after some time, Dove finally got around to asking Stork something.

Dove: Stork, what happened? What happened to the Storm Hawks?

Stork fell silent on the question. He could see himself hiding in the wreckage of the Condor, cowering in fear as the Cyclonians attacked. He could see the Dark Ace leading the Cyclonians in attacking the Condor. As those thoughts lingered in Stork's mind, he spoke to himself.

Stork: It's my fault. It's my fault. They all died because of me. They're all gone....because of me....

In that moment, it became clear to Dove that Stork had been broken by what had happened to the Storm Hawks. Meanwhile outside the Windmill, a Cyclonian Probe Droid was seen observing the Windmill. It wasn't long before the Probe Droid flew away to report back to it's masters.
