37. Final Report, the Near End of the Trip

"Your coffee," Hyeyoon put down a glass of black coffee on the table and Rowoon just raised his face a little to say thank you. "Do you need any help?" Hyeyoon asked as she took a seat beside the guy and checking on his laptop screen. It was their last sampling and Rowoon was compiling all the data.

Rowoon slightly turned to Hyeyoon and smiled, "It's fine, I'm almost done," he reassured. Luckily, they got help from Kent to collect all the data so they could finish the task earlier today. It was 2 hours ago when they finished the last sampling exactly at lunchtime.

They were still at the company cafeteria, and there weren't a lot of people as the lunch break was over an hour ago. After the lunch break, they decided to work on the final report so they would get more free time after this.

"What time is your flight to Seoul?" Kent got another snack for him before sat on the seat across from Rowoon.

Hyeyoon looked at Rowoon and the latter responded lightly while typing on his laptop. "Around 11 PM, tomorrow night," he said.

Kent nodded and sipped his coffee. "You guys still have one more day then? What will you do? Do you have any plan to visit a place or something?" the guy was kindly asked the two of them if they needed a guide for sightseeing.

Both Rowoon and Hyeyoon looked at each other then Rowoon turned to Kent and responded, "I'm still not sure, actually," he said to Kent and Hyeyoon just shrugged.

Kent grinned before continued, "Or did you guys plan to stay at your condo all day?" he teased the two of them with mischievousness in his eyes. Kent flickered his eyebrows as he waited for their response. Both Rowoon and Hyeyoon threw their sight to another way, trying to avoid the awkwardness.

Rowoon cleared his throat, "Don't worry about us, we'll decide it later," he stated and though Kent didn't seem to satisfy with the answer, he let it go anyway.

Hyeyoon sighed in relief when they diverted their topic to other things. They started to talk about gadgets and stuff which Hyeyoon mostly failed to catch.

After an hour, the report was finally done. Hyeyoon saw Rowoon was shutting down his laptop and about to put it back on his backpack.

"All done?" Kent confirmed to the latter which he replied with a yes. The two tall men then stood up, Hyeyoon saw the view and gathered her belongings.

They arrived in front of the elevator and Kent patted on Rowoon's shoulder. "Thanks for today, man. I'll see you again later," Rowoon thanked the guy and Kent nodded.

"Don't mention it, just call me if you need anything," he was ready to send them off as the elevator's door opened. "Don't forget to let me know when you're about to go to the airport, I'll drive you there," he said again before Rowoon and Hyeyoon entered the elevator.

Just before the door closed, he managed to say, "Hey, you two, have fun tonight," he grinned widely and the door closed.

There was a chuckle from Rowoon and Hyeyoon raised her face to look at the guy weirdly. She judged him and Rowoon aware with her stare. He turned to see Hyeyoon and smirked.

"What?" Hyeyoon frowned.

Rowoon still couldn't wipe the grin off his face and the moment they arrived at the basement, he still had the smirks on her handsome face. Hyeyoon raised her eyebrows when they already in his car and the guy started to drive slowly out of the basement.

"Seriously, Rowoon, what are you laughing at?" Hyeyoon couldn't help to ask when she found him weird as he was all smiling and smirking himself.

"Nothing, it's just Kent thought there was something between us," he finally spilled the reason.

Hyeyoon still didn't get the correlation in between the stories. Rowoon continued to explain, "I once came here, last year, and he was about to hook me up with a girl from the company who got interested in me, but I refused. I told him I already have a girlfriend in Korea and we planned for marriage soon," Rowoon paused yet the guy remained focus on the road as he slowly speeding up to the main road. He went on, "he probably assumed you're the girl, sorry, Hyeyoon, it was merely an excuse to stop him from talking about the girl to me whenever we had the chance to talk. I have no idea he still thinks about it seriously,"

Hyeyoon didn't expect to receive such information so she was dumbfounded for a moment and couldn't utter anything. Rowoon felt the silence and he turned to see at the girl. After a moment of pause, Hyeyoon finally responded.

"Why did you refuse?" she managed to stay calm and tried to not cracked her voice. "Had you seen the girl? She didn't meet your standard?" she asked and Rowoon shook his head.

"It's not like that," he turned the car to enter the highway and they sped up more due to the speed limit. Hyeyoon couldn't help to mesmerize upon witnessing his driving skill. Hyeyoon looked at Rowoon, still waiting for him to continue. Rowoon was hesitant at first, "I don't know, I wasn't interested in a relationship back then, I enjoyed my single status and was more focused on my career," he explained.

Hyeyoon thought for the best answer and she responded, "In my opinion, you should've tried to open up again, maybe, Rowoon. I mean, don't overwork yourself. Try to find something that can make you happy, or maybe meet someone," Hyeyoon suggested. There was a silence as Rowoon didn't respond to her. Hyeyoon then looked to her side to see Rowoon remained silent and facing the front. Hyeyoon quickly corrected herself as she might accidentally offend him. "I mean, everyone has the right to be happy, so are you,"

Rowoon finally flashed a smile and he slightly turned to see the girl, before turned to the front again. "Thanks, Hyeyoon, I know, and I will find my happiness, too, don't worry," he said finally. Hyeyoon suddenly felt a strange sting feeling in her heart, and it made her ache in some ways.

Hyeyoon couldn't stand to see the guy and tried to throw her sight outside the windows. It was nearly 4.00 PM and they already exited the highway as now they entered the downtown area near his condominium complex.

Suddenly Hyeyoon felt reluctant that the journey ended here. They would return to Seoul tomorrow, and the 10 days trip would over soon. Rowoon didn't talk much when he turned to park his car in the basement and turned off the engine. Just like how Hyeyoon felt, Rowoon was actually felt reluctant to end their trip just like that. Before they got off the car, Rowoon looked at Hyeyoon with expectation in his eyes. There was a sudden idea that popped out in his head and he let out a grin.

Hyeyoon could feel that her heart started to beat rapidly. The look in his eyes and the dimmed light at the basement was familiar yet still affect her in certain ways, and when Rowoon made a curve with the corner of his lips, Hyeyoon just gulped.

He moved closer rather slowly at Hyeyoon and released her seatbelt. He smiled, "Let's go," his tone was persuasive and Hyeyoon was hypnotized. She didn't protest or refused but waited on his next move as she saw Rowoon got off the car and went to the other side to open the door for Hyeyoon.

She blankly muttered, "Where are we going?" she asked as Rowoon was now on her side and ready to let her out of the car.

"We won't go far," he replied shortly and pulled the girl gently from the car. He closed the door and locked it. Rowoon reached Hyeyoon's hand and he walked outside the basement to the pedestrian near his condominium building. The downtown area was a very strategic area with walking distance to mostly San Jose's amenities.

They walked for a few minutes and Hyeyoon could see a lot of attractions such as bars, lounges, restaurants. It was very close that they didn't even need to drive. Rowoon smiled upon seeing how Hyeyoon got very stunned with the view.

There was quite a lot of passerby at this hour. They walked hand in hand for a few blocks and they arrived at a more crowded area. There were a few stands and containers of street food before the entrance. Hyeyoon presumed it was a night market. And, yes it was. San Pedro Square Market.

He slowly escorted her to the entrance of the market. Hyeyoon was confused at first but once she realized the place they were visiting, her eyes widened with excitement.

Alive with history, San Pedro's first restaurant opened its doors in 1972. San Pedro Square was home to one of Spanish California's oldest settlements, the Peralta Adobe. Built-in 1797, it was the last remaining structure from El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe.

They walked slowly along the street with the trees on each side of the pedestrian. Hyeyoon was completely astonished by the view as they could view San Jose mayor Thomas Fallon's home from 1855 across the street.

San Pedro Square's offered culinary tastes from every place in the world. The place represented every culinary delight and they could find the middle eastern section and also other multiple Asian influences.

The visitors were getting crowded and would be more in the evening. Rowoon saw Hyeyoon seemed to enjoy the vibes and he couldn't help a smile upon seeing the girl exclaimed her excitement.

She stopped at the live violin performance at the end of the street. The guy played the How's Moving Castle Theme Song and the drew audiences started to gather around him, enjoying his performance.

Rowoon stood behind the girl and watched the performer over her head. The man played so well that everyone applauded him when he finished his song. Rowoon handed to Hyeyoon a few bucks and told her to give them to the violinist.

Hyeyoon seemed very enjoy the sightseeing and Rowoon silently felt glad that he made a good choice to bring the girl here. They kept walking along the street and enjoy the afternoon wind. Hyeyoon only wore a thin layer of a white blouse with a knee-length skirt. The girl started to feel a bit cold as she didn't prepare for a stroll around. Rowoon took off his suit and slowly put it around her shoulder.

Hyeyoon jolted a bit at the sudden gesture and stared at Rowoon who nonchalantly walked past her while putting both of his hands in his pocket. Hyeyoon ran a little to catch up his long steps and when she reached him, she was about to give his suit back.

"I'm fine," she said but Rowoon quickly cut her off.

"Just wear it, you're about to catch a cold, I don't want to treat sick people in my condo," he sarcastically replied which got a confused look on the girl. Hyeyoon couldn't really get what was inside this guy's head. Sometimes, he could be so warm and so attentive, yet turned to be a cold-hearted man in the next second, as if he had split personalities.

Didn't want to ruin the good atmosphere, Hyeyoon decided to ignore him and kept her mouth shut. When she saw Rowoon turned to a store, she followed him entered a wine store.

"Seriously, Rowoon?" she hissed when Hyeyoon saw Rowoon took two bottles of champagne.

Rowoon heard her and showed her the champagne. It was her favorite and he still remembered it. Hyeyoon looked up at him and was amazed at how he still remembered the trivia things. Rowoon saw the girl's reaction. He smirked and shrugged before paid the bill at the cashier.

"Why did you buy that?" she asked as the two of them back again walked at the pedestrian. The visitors were getting crowded as it was almost 6 PM. They walked around for an hour and a half already.

Rowoon looked at her and smiled, "it's your favorite," he stated. "The trip will end tomorrow, so, should we throw a private party tonight, Hyeyoon? It's probably our last chance to stay together like this," he continued and the last sentence hit her chest like a dagger.

The girl turned silent and the two quietly kept walking through the road. At the end of the turn, there was a tango dance performance and Rowoon stopped. Hyeyoon looked up to him, and the guy was amazed by the crowd.

He grabbed Hyeyoon's hand and pointed at the live performance. "Wanna see it?" he offered and without waiting for her response, he pulled her closer to the crowd. Rowoon seemed to enjoy the show and dance along with the melody, he told Hyeyoon to join but the girl refused at first. She wasn't a dancer and she couldn't dance, at all.

But the guy didn't care and pulled the girl along to the center of the crowd, persuaded her to have fun. Rowoon laughed at the tiny girl who shyly got dragged to the center as he tried to teach her a few steps but failed miserably.

"No, Rowoon. I can't dance!" she shouted since the crowd was so loud.

Rowoon chuckled and gave up. He then pulled Hyeyoon out of the crowds to the nearest bench. It was sunset. The yellow and mixed red tinge was seen on the horizon as the sun was slowly setting to the west. Hyeyoon glanced at the watch and it was nearly 7.30 PM.

Rowoon saw the gesture and he understood. "Let's go home,"

* * *

They arrived at his condo at 8 PM and Hyeyoon immediately went straight to wash up before preparing for their dinner. They order a take-out at the restaurant near his condo. A few pans of pizza and salad. Hyeyoon took out the meal and place it on a plate. She was still serving the dinner when Rowoon walked out of his room, just finished washing up.

"Dinner?" Hyeyoon invited the guy to sit at the dining table and Rowoon immediately joined her.

"Yes, of course, I'm starving," he said and he took a slice and had it in one go.

They had dinner while talked about few things. Mostly about works, and how was their life while they were apart. Hyeyoon enjoyed his stories about his master's degree and how he targeted to be assigned to San Jose one day. He really enjoyed the lifestyle here and planned to move to the city if there was a chance.

Right after the dinner, Rowoon invited the girl to enjoy the view from the balcony. There was a round table with two chairs placed right to the night city view of the downtown. Hyeyoon was mesmerized by the view and she enjoyed the cold early summer breeze near the railing.

Rowoon joined her soon after he took the champagne he bought earlier and pour two glasses for both of them. As he handed the glass to her, Hyeyoon suddenly recalled the moment when someone had given her this champagne at the Gala Night in Beijing.

Rowoon seemed to catch her expression and was half smiling. "Why?" he asked the girl and Hyeyoon just shook her head. Rowoon had decided to tell her everything from now on. There was useless to hide it anyway. "Remember when you got this champagne at Beijing Gala Night, Hyeyoon?"

Just when Rowoon actually brought up the topic, Hyeyoon threw a glance at the guy and judged him. Rowoon let out a soft smile at the girl and to answer the unspoken question, he just nodded. "Yes, it was me," he told her honestly.

"How-," Hyeyoon was unable to say anything and Rowoon could predict her reaction.

Rowoon didn't bother to say anything and raised the glass for her. Hyeyoon took it and clanked the glass with him. She took one sip and she had always loved the first taste when the liquid touched her lips. She finished it all and so did Rowoon.

Hyeyoon let out a long sigh. Rowoon looked at the girl and she stated, "you hide a lot of things, Rowoon. What else do you have?" she was actually joking at first. But when she saw his expression, Hyeyoon then realized that Rowoon did have something else. Rowoon thought as they would return to Seoul tomorrow, there were a few things he still needed to tell her, to know that this might be his only chance, he quickly made the decision.

Rowoon stared at her for quite some time, then took the seat near the round table and reached out to his pocket, and let out a small thing in his hand. He placed it on the table and showed it to Hyeyoon. It was the watch she was supposed to give him three years ago. The girl took the other seat and squinted her eyes to have a clearer look at the watch.

Hyeyoon was surprised. She slowly took the watch and shot him a glare, demanding his explanation.

"How could you have this?" she asked, didn't believe what she had just seen. How could the watch come out from his pocket? She believed the watch had been thrown away somewhere long ago but turned out it didn't.

Just to make her more shocked, Rowoon took out another thing from his left pocket and gave her the gold envelope that she knew very well. Hyeyoon's hand trembled as she reached out to take the paper and her eyes flickered.

"The day when you left Korea, I was waiting for you near your place and met Jeein, from her I learned that you were leaving," Rowoon paused, he could see a glitch of sadness in her eyes, "This one was supposed to be my present, for our anniversary," Hyeyoon was silent. She left out speechless and couldn't utter anything.

The fact that Rowoon had her present was already shocked her, but then she realized that Jeein was lying to her for all this time. She told her that she threw the present away, but turned out she didn't.

Hyeyoon raised her red eyes to look at Rowoon. He was stunned to see the hurt in her eyes. Yet he was confused why she would feel that way as if she was got betrayed. The clueless Rowoon just added more fuel to the fire by informing her that he had all their shared memories at his place and if Hyeyoon would like to take them from him, he would give them back to her.

The girl didn't believe the fact she just learned and quickly wiped her tears that were about to escape to finally gazed back to Rowoon and give the watch back to him. "No," she said shortly. "I don't want them back," she refused. Frustrated, Hyeyoon grabbed the champagne and poured the alcohol on her glass. She drank it in one go and stared blankly at the city view.

Why would she want them back, anyway? Hyeyoon had enough of three years to move on, though everything was like being thrown back to her face when she met Rowoon again recently by fate. Why would she want to recall all the torturing memories back? She won't let herself be drawn back to the past.

"You can have them if you want to, and this one was for you, anyway," Hyeyoon pointed at the watch. She then took another glass of the champagne and was about to pour another one when Rowoon held her hand.

"Stop, you drink too much," her face was already red and Rowoon knew she would be drunk if she kept drinking the alcohol. Hyeyoon slapped his hand and poured another glass just to took it in one go afterward.

"I'm fine," she retorted and went for another glass.

Rowoon sighed. "You'd better be," he said. And Rowoon took another one from his pocket and Hyeyoon started to curious what more could be inside his pocket as he kept taking out stuff from there. Rowoon then placed a tiny box on the table and gave it to Hyeyoon.

Hyeyoon raised an eyebrow as she saw the box and stared at Rowoon.

"It was for you," he said gently and his past tenses referred to a past event. "It was supposed to be your birthday gift, Hyeyoon. But I can't give it to you at that time, so," he paused. He took a deep breath and checked on her facial expression before went on, "if this is my last chance talking to you-alone-like this, Hyeyoon, then I better give it to you now,"

Hyeyoon seemed to hesitate at first but then she took the box and opened the lid. It was a round-cut white gold diamond bracelet. Hyeyoon was agape and stunned to see the present. It was so pretty. The clear diamond was shimmering under the light and Hyeyoon couldn't help but dazzle to its beauty. Though it was so pretty, as Hyeyoon knew her place, she wasn't at the right place and the right person to receive the gift anymore.

Hyeyoon closed the lid and gave the box back to Rowoon. "I'm sorry, Rowoon, I can't accept this," Rowoon already knew that she'd refuse, but his pride won't allow him to take back the present he'd already given to her.

Rowoon smiled and reached her hand to take the gift. "Just take it or throw it away if you want to, I won't take it back,"

Hyeyoon didn't move or refuse and Rowoon sighed in relief. He drank another glass of the alcohol to let it burnt in his throat. The alcohol would help him to sleep faster tonight, he was hoping he won't remember anything tomorrow.

Rowoon was about to pour for another glass when he heard Hyeyoon sighed beside him. He looked at the girl and she spoke.

"Why did you do that, Rowoon?" she began. Rowoon was stunned for a split second, but he remained silent. "You broke up with me, and now you're telling me all this, confessing all your hidden feeling after three years, isn't it too late?" she threw her gaze to the man beside her and Rowoon could see the helplessness in her eyes. He more than aware that he had lost his chance and the girl that so precious and he was too late to realize it.

Seeing Rowoon was being silent, Hyeyoon went on, "was it all about the competition? You saw me already with another guy, and now you're being competitive, after realizing you had lost your chance? Are you trying to reclaim your chance?" Hyeyoon guessed. And the bluntness in her words was startled him.

Though she wasn't one hundred percent right, the last part of her statement wasn't false either. He admitted that he had the thought of reclaiming her back, as he thought Hyeyoon might be still had the same feeling as his. But he won't do that. As much as he still wanted her back, he won't force her to be his if she wasn't willing to. His care towards her had overcome his pride and the temptation to snatch her from her man. He had decided to let her be wherever she wanted and did whatever made her happy.

Rowoon stared at her rather intently and Hyeyoon could feel the strange gush feeling ran up and down her spine. The feeling made her felt giddy all of a sudden. His deep eyes were as gorgeous as usual, she still had clear memories of it. Hyeyoon unconsciously stared at his eyes and realized the slight movement of his eyebrows. He was deep furrowing as if he was holding something.

His voice came out rather softly and deep, he was stating his mind clearly and Hyeyoon could hear the firmness in his tone, "I do still love you, Hyeyoon, but I won't force you to do anything for me, or pitied me for being honest with you right now," he paused as he took a deep breath before continuing, "I admit my past mistake to you, all I can do now is accepting the fact that I had lost you. I know, apologizing won't be enough to drastically change our status. It's fine. I'm fine, I'll take care of myself," he flashed a bitter smile and Hyeyoon witnessed all of it.

Seeing his smile made her heart hurt and she suddenly felt the urge to throw her body onto him and hug him right away but her mind still held her to her sanity. If she had lost control of herself right now, she won't be able to hold herself anymore.

Hyeyoon sighed and put down her glass after finished all the liquid remained. She got up and was about to go into the living room. "I think we need to rest" Hyeyoon suggested and Rowoon nodded in response.

She gathered the stuff on the table and went in. Rowoon followed the girl inside and he saw as she put the dishes on the sink. "I'll wash the dishes, you can rest, Hyeyoon," he said and the girl just blankly stared at him. She then nodded and was about to go to her room.

Rowoon was locking the sliding door before stood there, stunned at his spot in the living room near the couch. He was watching Hyeyoon walked slowly from the kitchen before the fast movement had made him stunned and in the next second, the girl ran toward him and was actually throwing her tiny body at him. She lingered her hand around his waist, hugging him.

It was like in a flash motion when he realized that Hyeyoon was now burying her face on his chest. Inhaled deeply his body scent remained the same in her memory. The intoxicating scent of his skin and the years of contactless. His brain had a few seconds to process everything when he realized that the girl was in his arms, and he wasn't daydreaming.

Rowoon looked down to see the crown of her head and he put his chin on the top of her head. Hugging her tighter and slowly pulled her closer to give more access to stick their body together.

"Hyeyoon," he sighed. Calling out her name desperately.

Hyeyoon heard him and she recognized the tone of his voice. The desire in his tone was clear and Hyeyoon pulled out to broke the hug. She just realized what she had done and worriedly avoiding his gaze. Her eyes restless, she tried to look down and slowly released her body from him.

"I'm sorry," her voice trembled as she stepped back. The atmosphere and the alcohol made her lose control of herself and she tried to get her sense back. She was about to run away when Rowoon grabbed her hand and pulled her to his body once again.

The sudden force made them lost their balance and the two of them stumbled upon and both fell on the couch with Rowoon was beneath and Hyeyoon fell right onto his body. Hyeyoon gasped to the sudden touch and tried to wriggle free. But Rowoon's power was too much for her as he pulled her body tighter to his chest, locked her position.

"Rowoon, we shouldn't-" Hyeyoon tried to break free but Rowoon didn't budge. His breath ragged and he intently looked at the girl, meanwhile, Hyeyoon was still trying to avoid his gaze.

"Hyeyoon," he called out. Hyeyoon still looked down, didn't dare to look up. Rowoon talked again, "look at me," he said hoarsely. But the demand in his voice made it clear for Hyeyoon to slowly complied with his words. "Look at me, Hyeyoon," he demanded once again and Hyeyoon had no choice but to do as he said.

Hyeyoon slowly and hesitantly raised to look at him. Their eyes met and Hyeyoon could feel the weird sensation as they stared at each other. The familiar sensation that she hadn't felt for years suddenly reappeared, and she hardly took control of it.

Both of them stared in silence and the sudden motion made her brain turned blank as the guy suddenly leaned upward to capture her lips and took her into an intoxicating kiss.
